Well I've been a moonshiner for 17 long years and I spent all my money on whiskey and beer if whiskey don't kill me, I don't know what will gonna go to some dark hollow gonna set up my still and I'll sell you one gallon for a two dollar bill if whiskey don't kill me I don't know what will well It's corn bread when I'm hungry, corn whiskey when I'm dry green bags when I'm hard up and religion when I die If whiskey don't kill me, I don't know what will If that river was whiskey and I was a duck I'd swim to the bottom and drink my way up If whiskey don't kill me I don't know what will way out in some train yard I wander alone I'm drunk as the devil so leave me alone if whiskey don't kill me I don't know what will well I make my own whiskey, I make my own wine some ten thousand bottles I've killed in my time if whiskey don't kill me I don't know what will
@@Jerkass_Homer I was never sure if they changed it to "green bags" or not given that space bags are sometimes that clear green color and I couldn't even begin to tell ya how many I've passed around yards, camps, squats, shows and parking lots lol They changed "clinch mountain" to "some train yard", "make my own stew" to "make my own whiskey", etc, and given that it's a mashup of "Moonshiner" and "Rye Whiskey" with lyrics that pertain more to the traveling life I wouldn't be surprised. Ya get some solid kickdowns or tips and ya buy what ya like, when it's tight ya cop a space bag or some Wild Irish Rose or whatever. It would make sense but I can't tell from the recording and I haven't seen em in years and didn't know em when I did.
Great version of a great song. As for the line about the river being whiskey, I believe that is a Charlie Poole lyric and has been used in others songs as a popular stanza, Drunken hiccups and Moonshiner are two I can think of right now.
Lyrics: We'll I've been moonshina for 17 long years and I spent all of ma monee on whiskey and beer If whiskey don't kill me I don't know what will Gonna go to some dark tower and settle my still and I'll sell you one gallon for a two dollard bill If whiskey don't kill me I don't know what will Well it's country when I'm hungry, corn whiskey when I'm dry Greenbags when I'm Hard Up, and religion when I die If whiskey don't kill me I don't know what will So if that river was whiskey and I was a duck I'd swim to the bottom and drink my way up If whiskey don't kill me I don't know what will Way down in some trainyard I wander a-lone I'm drunk as a devil so leave me alone If whiskey don't kill me I don't know what will Well I make my own whiskey, I make my own wine Some 10 thousand bottles, I feel it's my time If whiskey don't kill me I don't know what will
The lyric "if whiskey was a river and i was a duck" was actually probably taken from a way older song called "trouble in mind"(r.m. Jones), one of Janis Joplin's very first recordings of music in the mid sixties she did her own version of it with Jorma Kaukonen on guitar(who is from Jefferson Airplane).
Well I've been a moonshiner for 17 long years
and I spent all my money on whiskey and beer
if whiskey don't kill me, I don't know what will
gonna go to some dark hollow gonna set up my still
and I'll sell you one gallon for a two dollar bill
if whiskey don't kill me I don't know what will
well It's corn bread when I'm hungry, corn whiskey when I'm dry
green bags when I'm hard up and religion when I die
If whiskey don't kill me, I don't know what will
If that river was whiskey and I was a duck
I'd swim to the bottom and drink my way up
If whiskey don't kill me I don't know what will
way out in some train yard I wander alone
I'm drunk as the devil so leave me alone
if whiskey don't kill me I don't know what will
well I make my own whiskey, I make my own wine
some ten thousand bottles I've killed in my time
if whiskey don't kill me I don't know what will
