Cider was actually the drink of choice for most americans prior to prohibition.
Then prohibition happened and the cider orchards got cut down.
Afterwards, it was easier to replant with hops than apple trees.
Also the famous Johnny Apple Seed was spreading cider plantations not eating apples.
It really is a shame they replanted hops. Hops is what makes beer taste like shit. It is important as a preservative but we have the tech to preserve without making it taste nasty.

I'm of german ancestry, and do appreciate a good beer. It's liquid bread. It pairs great with fish and chips. They can taste good, but, I also enjoy cider. It's a shame they destroyed a part of our history and culture like this, just because women and hardcore christians complained.

Let's not forget that beer was originally a drink created for women and children because it was considered too weak to be a man's drink. Also that's where the stereyotypical depiction of a witch comes from! The women that made beer in the middle ages were known as brewsters, often kept black cats to keep rodents out of the grain, marked their shops/homes with a bundle of sticks or a broom above the door, and wore black cloaks and pointy hats to the market so they coups be easily picked out among crowds :3

What? The pointed style witch hat's origins are arguable. But the two most likely origins are the three pointed hat that Jewish people used to wear, or (more likely) Greek Mithraism, which was a threat to Christianity in it's beginnnings.
