Hugo and Sonya, love your enthusiasm. I'm outfitting my first suit and I got bit by the sartorial bug! As a "young" (30yo) scientist, dress and fashion has never been my strong suit; I've worn cheap sneakers and t-shirts all my life. Can't describe how confident and unexpectedly sharp I looked yesterday at the initial measuring. Never knew I could look this good!!! Love the content and keep it up!
Dear Hugo, I just bought my first suit. Dark Navy, Single Breast, Half Canvas - Eduard Dressler. And then i bought a pair of Crockett and Jones Connaught 2 with City sole. My first real fine dress. So happy about it. Really appreciate all of your videos, its been a big help
I'm very happy to say that teens (boys and girls) at Jenks High School, in Jenks, OK , have brought the Oxford shoe out of the 1900s. They are wearing Oxfords with boot cut jeans, and all manner of casual clothes, even shorts. I love their look. It makes guys and girls, alike, look so stylish but fun. I personally love Oxfords and own a few pair. It is fun to see people wear them on a daily basis. Good thing you are here to advise!
Thank you Hugo and Sonya! I'm watching these "shoe talks" with so much interest. I love the precision and generosity of your explanations regarding the different styles and their histories. You two have me thoroughly engaged with this subject and are giving me the knowledge to shop for shoes more thoughtfully and with clearer intent. This is so valuable.
Well said. It’s very thorough information that is much needed. I am a 36 year old female raising a 12 year old son to take care of what he has so he can be prepared for the nicer, more quality shoes and attire.
Sartorial Talks is an accidental discovery of mine. There is so much of history and content lessons in each and every video that they produce, that it needs to be watched multiple times to digest thoroughly. I just love it. Thank you so very much.
Thank you Hugo and Sonia for sharing your knowledge about the different type of shoes. Since I started following you, i became more knowledgeable about gentlemen's fashion.

Very interesting video, Hugo! Then the internet took off which allows us to view and learn about fine shoes without feeling embarrassed, unless of course at times such as when my wife stumbles upon me whilst I’m learning from sources such as your fine productions of “Sartorial Talks”. I just want to discuss what you define as an 'austerity brogue' at the start. Here in London people would simply define the first shoe as a 'plain cap toe oxford'. To be called a brogue, a shoe requires 'brogueing', that is to say holes. To achieve brogueing, it is necessary to do the holes/punches on an extra layer of leather (otherwise you have holes in your shoe), that is why it is often done on the cap toe: you have a first layer and a second added on which the holes are punched. This requires more leather to be used. To achieve this effect without using so much leather (as would be required in times of austerity) and obtain an - austerity brogue -, the punching, stitching and detailing is all done on the same layer, trying to recreate the look , but without the use of extra layers of leather and also calling the lining into play to match colour, so that the holes don't have different colour ! I hope you will consider this and perhaps obtain your thoughts.
Dear William, thanks for your comment and your question. Actually I made a little mistake in the video as I show a plain cap toe oxford (as you rightly said) and not an Austerity Brogue. An "Austerity Brogue" is a shoe with nothing but a wingtip pattern on the upper. No perforations, pinking, or medallions. So it's true that It’s technically not a Brogue as there are no perforations. This is why, I suppose, the word "Austerity" is used also (which means "extreme plainness and simplicity of style or appearance"). Very strange indeed I agree, Cheers ! Hugo
Dear Hugo, thanks for your kind reply and your points made. The word 'austerity' always reminds me of the 1920s depression and I've always thought perhaps that is when the design came about. All the best,
My son is 14 and is between a size 14/15 l hope his growth slows down, because it is going to be difficult to buy shoes also the variety is limited . Great video!
I absolutely love this video as I wasnt too sure on wingtip etc very informational and knowledge that'll stay with me. Thank you both, keep up the great content.
I always enjoy Hugh. He appreciates and delights in luxury products, but without any pretentiousness. That is an amazing balance to maintain, a humble man who appreciates luxury items. Plus he had the wisdom to marry Sonya…… God bless them both.
I only have to say WOW. Well explained indeed, I learned a lot from this oxford educational presentation! I, myself am young shoemaker currently working on my little oxford balmoral shoe collection and I trully fell in love with shoes. Thanks again, I subscribed and I'm looking forward that one day I might be able to meet with you! Best regards from Serbia, Aleksandar
Dear Aleksandar, we came to Serbia twice already for the 24hours of Elegance in Belgrade. Thank you for your kind words and good luck for your shoemaking carreer. Hugo & Sonya
Brilliant explanations. I can't help but feel Sonya is smartly intelligent and we'll versed in the shoe making industry. Hugo, it might be wise to allow her to speak and showcase her knowledge. Great video, and I personally learned alot.
I saved this video so I can reference it every time I decide to buy another pair of dress shoes. BRAVO! I would like to know why modern dress shoes are pointed toes in the middle of the shoe and not more shaped like a natural foot (longer on the big toe/inner foot) for comfort. In addition to comfort, I would think it would help with walking more naturally.
Thanks. I don't really understand your question. It depends on the last (the shape) of there model. Some models are more "chiseled" than others indeed, while remaining very comfortable. Best, Hugo
Hi Hugo! I wish I can work and learn how to make such shoes. I have always been a fascinated how these shoes are made. And I am an avid fan. Thank you.

I always enjoy Hugh. He appreciates and delights in luxury products, but without any pretentiousness. That is an amazing balance to maintain, a humble man who appreciates luxury items. Plus he had the wisdom to marry Sonya…… God bless them both.
Thanks Roger. Marrying Sonya is undoubtedly the best thing I did in my entire life 😁! All my best, Hugo

Best regards from Serbia,
Aleksandar
Dear Aleksandar, we came to Serbia twice already for the 24hours of Elegance in Belgrade. Thank you for your kind words and good luck for your shoemaking carreer. Hugo & Sonya

Brilliant explanations. I can't help but feel Sonya is smartly intelligent and we'll versed in the shoe making industry. Hugo, it might be wise to allow her to speak and showcase her knowledge. Great video, and I personally learned alot.
Thanks Daniel, You have a nuanced way of expressing yourself. Very kind ! Sonya
Which brand is the wholecut Oxford, absolutely gorgeous
It's from Cobbler Union in Atlanta. Cheers, Hugo
Absolutely gorgeous shoe!
Thanks For Sharing Mister Hugo.Cobbler Union Is A Fantastic Brand Shoes 👍 I Love It
I saved this video so I can reference it every time I decide to buy another pair of dress shoes.
Best, Hugo
