This is probably the most common mistake when using Special Effects: The background noise during the Commanding Officer's cuts were MUCH TOO HIGH. Remember, effects are used to enhance the story, not the other way around. If the viewer can't hear the dialog then the story is lost.

Posing a question here: As soon as they crossed over some rocks, the heavens were in full view and they were in awe. But, is that realistic? Wouldn't they have been able to look up before they crossed the small ridge of rocks and and see exactly the same view? Considering the size of the planets up in the sky, could they really be hidden until they crossed over the rocks?

I doubt that the planets so near together would exist without dismantling each other (Roche-Limit). You can see a Gasgiant and a pretty big terrestrial planet in the sky. So I would say at least the two terrestrial Planets (the one with the girls and the one in the sky) would harm each other.
Also, the catastrophe was 10 years ago (2045 on the planet, 2035 on the ship) so they should have seen this sky already.

The woman in the ship's logs showed a name to the side with the other data as "Jones, Samantha". I would infer that the girl on the planet WAS her actual daughter. Not sure about the other girl, though. Also of note, opening sequence indicated year 2045 and the ship's log data on the side had a timestamp of 2035, so 10yrs had passed.

I'm guessing it was either no boom mic and/or no lavalier mics to blame for the poor audio levels, any time they were looking away or a distance from the camera the dialog became really hard to hear. The score drowning it out (and the jump cuts to the loud exploding ship) didn't help much either.

Editing also includes sound mixing and sound editing... which is really not the case with all those new people who claim they are film editors. Sound editing and sound quality should be at the same level as video/film. So if you are doing HD video, then you need boom operator, you need a separate sound recording system, and bring all that together in the post-production.

I contributed subtitles to the video and therefore listened very carefully to every line. I think the concept is, a science research vessel encountered a catastrophic problem; the daughter of the science officer and one other child were put into cryogenic storage in the hopes they might survive. The two children survived the catastrophe and ten years later, on a planet, felt there was value in activating two canisters they had possession of. For reason unexplained, the young women needed to hike to a particular location where/when darkness was present, before setting off the canister. They didn't find it easy but they resolved with teamwork to release the contents. The contents shot away from the planet and were visible to them as a star. It is the young woman's birthday. She feels the star is hers to name. The dialogue suggests that the daughter is fulfilling a wish of her mother, that she is continuing the advancement of scientific knowledge in some way ...?
Although I looked hard for some meaning, I really have to conclude that this film is missing good direction. The actors weren't coached very well for diction, or continuity of character. It isn't easy to tell whether they feel they are accomplishing something of gravity, or just playing around with and destroying the various leftover artifacts from the science experiments.
I think the joke is: the mother gave her life in the hope her daughter would further scientific knowledge. Instead, the kids survived to simply play around with the stuff without any concept of what they were doing.

As much as l'm irritated by lippy and caked mascara on medieval peasants,l'm also ticked off the incongruity of plucked eyebrows and symmetrical haircut in cryosleep or wherever they abruptly emerged from. Doesn't matter when the things they're saying are so disconnected, unnatural and random. "Happy Birthday A". WTF. So a science vessel with 'secrets' was carrying two kids in Cyro for 'reasons' who are the only survivors. Who then decide randomly to open a weird heavy piece of metal that they know killed their parents because one of their mothers told them to not be afraid of the 'black oceans' of space. Said container has a 'star' in it (what? why? hunh?), and we're left with two teenagers who are just going to die on a rock alone, but it's all good because...again, reasons (which are never explained, implied or probably even considered by the writer). Also them staring up at the sky in disbelief repeatedly throughout, while they've been seeing the same view they've had for the last five years...makes zero sense. Good production value across the board, wasted utterly.

This is what I was thinking. I kept turning up the volume to try and make out what they were saying only to immediately have my ears blown out by the soundFX and music. Terrible audio balance. And I have to agree with TrackZero about what I could hear was completely meaningless. There was no context for anything they were saying and their reactions to their environment were that of someone that was only seeing this sky for the first time. Then there is the completely implausible skybox to begin with. It actually really irks me when they include scenes like that for an alien planet because if there were that many planets / moons close enough to be seen at that magnitude, they would absolutely destroy each other by tidal forces. This was just terrible.

    • @GreylanderTV

The view we see there is not absolutely impossible (though highly unlikely, and requiring a rare alignment as well). The world they were on would likely be a moon of a Jupiter-type gas giant. If you saw Jupiter form one of its moons it would be very large in the Sky. The view of two other planets/moons seeming on top of each other could be the result of the closer one actually being much much closer (and therefore much smaller) than it appears. Likely those would have to be "moons the the moon we are on"(or vice-versa) for the visual configuration we see which also includes the gas giant.
Clearly though, the image was chosen for its "artistic" value not its scientific realism.

My primary problem was with a shot partway through that shows a gas giant near the sunset, followed closely by a shot that shows a gas giant of similar size to the right. 1. Get some more experienced actors in your piece. The people that were in it were fine, but felt more like cosplay people who were asked to be in a short film. I don't know the full details of your casting process, but it felt the the actors just showed up with no preparation. It could also be that they are just really young and are still learning. No hate! Just being honest.
    2. Get someone to edit and craft the story into a more lean piece.
    3. Going back and forth between a recording and the story proper is a good technique, but maybe even subtitles for the commanding officer's lines if the chaos in the background drowns out her dialogue. Unless not hearing what she had to say was the point, then bravo.
    4. Keep doing what you are doing and use every project as a learning experience.
Otherwise, it's good to see you went out and tried. Keep it up!

This needed to be about 10 minutes longer. I feel as though we just saw the foundation of what the short was going to be about...like did they release the entity that the mom discovered?...maybe instead of jumping in time, it could’ve been more linear. I.e - after the death of her mom we see her clicking off the message, as the entity that caused her death is with her. The daughter is trying to honor her mom by saving the very thing that caused her death. Or we see that was the message her dad finally had the strength to show her thus giving her life purpose.
The premise was solid execution was solid, i think the biggest weakness was the length. We needed more to understand how they came to be in possession of something so powerful that it could make a star. I do believe that the answer is somewhere in the exposition of the mom before the personal message to her daughter and i do believe that that powerful “star” is or was that entity that inadvertently caused the mom’s death. But instead of “telling “ the audience, we needed to “see” it.

The proximity of the huge planet would cause quakes and volcanic activity on the planet they were on. If the two planets had similar mass they would be ripping each other apart.

    • @Quickened1
      @Quickened1 4 года назад

Since the mass of all of the objects shown, is not known, no assumptions can be made as to their gravitational effects. Their size can also be called into question. That assumed gas giant, could be much smaller than our moon, just much closer. It could be as light as a helium balloon, and therefore have little gravitational force. Anyway, without knowing their mass, size, and distance, that type of neighborhood is totally plausible...

Sci-fi short - comments by Jan
    Beware of spoilers!
    Starian by Eric Zaragoza
Plot: two teenage girls surviving after accident on a planet making their own star? Or something??
Negatives: 1) sound - noise > information: majority of the girls talk and almost all of the mother is very hard to understand, while majority of the storytelling important facts are presented by talk; 2) I know it is not always important, but here I missed some background info: how the girls survived on the planet; 3) some illogical or unclear things: why there are walking from somewhere to somewhere else, when they could do it in the first place, why the sky views are differing between scenes so much; the girls were in perfect state - it keeps raising questions about their survival; 4) rewatching helps to better grasp some details of storytelling - e.g. the year of the mother recording video - would be nice to have a chance to find it for the first time, but I was focused just on trying to figure out what she was saying…
Positives: 1) music; 2) visuals - both real (landscape I suppose) and CGI
Personal note: What can I say, I like short haired women
Summary: Interesting idea, but realization has some flaws which ruin the potential of good enjoyment

Loved the uniforms they were wearing, great work there. Agreed with others that the plot was missing a bite, something to snag onto. I was kind of thinking they were in the pods still and having a shared dream of exploring the universe together, and the final cut was going to cut to them in their pods, damaged together in space or something. Which would explain why the visuals weren't making the most sense as well as they seemed to just be off exploring for no reason.

Great job on this. Loved the visuals and was intrigued to see what destroyed the ship. Really want more. To all the critics, this is a short film; it's in the message. Would they be able to see the view the planets before the rocks? sure but maybe the first girl was too upset to appreciate it until that point. Could a budget get three actresses with the same accent since they are all related? Sure but then you wouldn't have the diverse acting styles between them. I thought the acting was great they felt like two young sisters completely different in their priorities.

When I first saw the sky view, I thought they were on a habitable moon of a gas giant (ala Avatar), but the info in the lower left said a planet (most people who watched Avatar didn't realize they were on a moon). If it is a planet, in the normal way we define a planet, there were way too many other planets way too close. Therefore, they must have been on a large moon orbiting a gas giant.

Awesome movie, the canisters were celestial creator modules. The first ones created planets that the two women released into the sky at this part of the planet. The last one was special because in addition to creating the energy source of a star it also had the artificial intelligence it downloaded from the spaceship's computers which unfortunately caused the crash. This last canister ensured a new human colony will have guidance and will thrive.

There was a good dramatic atmosphere and some nice visuals. And the actresses obviously are talented and took their roles seriously. They are also very pretty. But I honestly couldn't tell what was happening other than that their spaceship crashed, they were stranded for 5 years, and at the end they released an energy being out of a container. The dialogue aboard the ship was so hard to hear that it added to the confusion. I doubt that they would have been so chipper after 5 years in a wasteland.

Yes the sound effects make it hard to hear some of the words but on a pc it was only a few words i didnt catch. the story doesnt have to be profound and great, it made sense in it own way and leaves a lot open to the imagination, which i really loved in this one. I liked it in spite of some issues. I am hard of hearing so the voice over the claxon was difficult to hear. I thought the speech of the mother was rather cold and distant. It is science fiction, she would not have to say "black ocean of space" just "go out and explore, the universe is beautiful - I love you..." The former sounds stilted to my ears, the latter is something I would say to my own daughter. It falls apart for me at the end, since I missed the imagination part that the writer had in his head or I missed it in the dialogue I could not hear.

for such a large production, more time could have been spent with the: why of making this short-
for instance: if a person was asked: What would you name a comet? and you answer: Cometion!
that should have been the first conversation-
2nd conversation could between the director/actors about not delivering: a "pretend-time" style of acting-
nearly all the comments below are true- this feels like an ego project-
not anything new or thoughtful, besides an odd name for a star-Starion!
Dust is dust, if they now play 7:37 minute ads
    "Your future is dust-"
it's like you (Dust) are saying to every viewer:
"You have no control - you're just blowing in the wind . . . and through the cosmos forever, but mostly just on this planet- that's your future. . . ."
I'm not arguing your accuracy on that -
but that's what your brand feels/sounds like-
how many times do I have to hear that weird trailer/bumper? Update that s***-
an out-dated digital voice, with loud ad spike sound audio levels, and downer autocratic delivery-
why was this short made? as an advertisement-
I rarely review, or type this much- but this one clip, made me question and comment-
on the chessiness/reality balance of actual human life-
thanks on the pretend story that had nothing to do with nothing-

Are they the only survivors? What is their goal with the "star"? [Is it a flair/signal?] Does the star have a function or is it a firework? [I would have had the actors practice pulling on a broom handle to give them the idea of body position when pulling against someone #straight_arms] Humans either have motivations or impulses: if this is a firework for her birthday, that would seem mute if they are stranded on a hostile planet where growing food seems like it would be a significant challenge.

The plot I got out of it is this. There was a ship above or in orbit around the planet. Something they assume alive hit the ship and cause catastrophic damage. The women recording knows they are all about to die and says. I have sent two of the children down. Somewhere she references that beacon at the end as well. Then we turn to the two girls (the two children). They have the beacon and are at odds about opening it. Then they switch who does and does not want to open it. Finally, they open the beacon out flies a bright light(the beacon) and off to earth or wherever it is programmed to go and tell where it was. So our girls happy in what they have done one says. Mom would have loved to see this or be here or something like that. They sit and ponder how long a ship of other humans maybe landing on their planet to find them. I assumed some things like the end about a ship coming back. Basically, that's the story I just watched. Not the best, not the worst. I enjoyed it.
