    I have watched 100’s of YT to improve my game. Fundamental Tennis blows them all away. My husband..excellent tennis player...refuses to watch YT,s....until catching one from Fundamental Tennis. This has upped his game. J teaches to all learning styles...which amazes me, as I have been teaching for over 22 years. I’m not too old to continue my extreme competitive ways....and J is helping me to do just that..
    Everyone spread the word about FT and get J more subscribers. He certainly has proven his worth.
    Thanks J.

    After recording myself, I notice that way too often, I don't react to the incoming ball until the ball is past the net. Not good.

    THIS IS SUCH A CRUCIAL TOPIC, thank you for bringing it to our collective attention. I was aware of my poor ball-reading skills, but because nobody was talking about it, I didn't think it was so important. That or I thought I was abnormal or defective and everyone else had zero problem with it. I think I have worse ball-reading skills than the average Joe/Josephine, all the more reason to work on it and, hopefully, all the more improvement I should _garner_ once I get it _up to snuff_ .
    [Oooo, that cuts me off at a very bad point in the sentence. Namely, right after I say "once I get it up". Unfortunate.]
    Wow, two old-guy sayings in one sentence! Time to sit down (in my rocker), button up the ol' cardigan and take my Geritol. And go to bed (it is presently 11:00 am). Nighty night!

    Yes, major problem to a lot of players. Many players do not work on drill about watching the ball. Well, you may add what type of spin applied on the ball as part of reading...should also know how to counter return.

    I've been watching all your videos... I went outside in 30 degrees weather to practice your toss lesson and it really helped me!!! thank you. regarding this lesson... my son also plays tennis and he says he has a tough time reading the ball, in terms of whether the coming ball is coming to his backhand or forehand side... While this lesson is great, you didn't touch base on reading where the ball is going to. I would love to hear from you regarding this one specific issue. Thank you again!

    • @FundamentalTennis
      @FundamentalTennis  4 года назад

      lamson nguyen hello, there is no magic wand or words of information that will get a player to immediately read the ball earlier. These drills expedite the learning curve. It takes practice and drills to quicken the learning curve. To answer your question you must read the 5 ball characteristics (height, speed, depth, spin and direction). Your son seems to be having trouble with reading the direction of the ball. Try this drill: every time he receives a ball he must call out left, middle or right. Put cones or anything to make 2 lines from the net to the baseline. These lines will divide the court into 3 vertical lanes (left, middle, and right).

    • @JamesDavisakaRemguy

      FYI, Tomaz Mencinger @ Feel Tennis has this tip, which is designed to address 'intention' i.e. where you're going to hit your next shot, which he feels is key to better tennis. You call out 'backhand' or 'forehand' IMMEDIATELY once you recognize which side your opponent's shot is coming to, the earlier the better.
      He claims (and I believe him) that this will improve your PREPARATION subconsciously and automatically, *but you gotta yell it out loud, that's part of the drill* It seems too simple, but if done right it should really help your son with his left/right shot recognition and subsequent racket preparation (as a free bonus!). In any case, I sincerely hope it helps - JD, Canada

    Great video! I can get to and attack short balls that are floaters but I have trouble identifying rally balls that land short. I should be attacking them, but instead, I end up hitting them late around knee level.
    I'm guessing that the last progression of the 1-2-3-hit drill will help with this and you're supposed to read whether a ball is short from the height over the net? Do you have a drill that practises identifying and attacking short balls?

    Great, as usual, but this seems to apply to ground strokes. How do you apply these principles to volleys and overheads? Also, you mention briefly spins such as slices; I usually can get near a short, sliced ball, but I am baffled by hte funny bounce. What is the cause of this problem?

    • @klaw03
      @klaw03 5 лет назад

      You mean funny bounce on clay courts/skidding on lines? Keep your eye on the ball until contact :)

    • @FundamentalTennis
      @FundamentalTennis  5 лет назад

      Chris Constable the cause of the slice problems question is your not reading where the ball is going to go after it bounces. This is because you need to improve your awareness of your opponents technique. Called technical anticipation. Meaning watching their swing path and racquet face angle at contact and how fast they swing. Just requires some quality reps to read the ball better. As for volleys and overheads you can do the height drill (call out the height of the ball). Or the speed drill (call the speed of the ball). Another option is to call out forehand or backhand meaning will u hit a forehand or a backhand. Try to make your first step before the ball crosses to your side of the net.another drill is to have someone feed balls in which they change the height and speed of the ball and you decide whether to let it go or hit it. Let the ball go if u think it will land out and hit the ball if u think it will land in. Start with these 👍

Can you do a video on racket and body preparation once you start reading the ball? I realized my inability to read the ball was more of an issue then my poor mechanics, like you said.

    Jeremy, the problem with this exercise is that I can easily identify the height and speed of the ball by reading the stroke of the person feeding even before the ball is hit but this stroke is different than a ground stroke. A better approach would be to design an exercise that forces the player to read actual ground strokes.
