Goosebumps. It's so peaceful and yet so full of introspection and retrospection on conflict, pain and love and doubt and joy and beauty bygone and still present, well, life. Makes me think of "Nun komm' der Heiden Heiland", another choral prelude which they may play at my funeral (which will feature hours and hours of Bach, I'm afraid).
Obscur antissimus, haha....very recognisable. Hope your funeral and mine as well will be far far away. But at that time: “Vor deinem Thron trett’ ich” it’s there...........and it will be played.
Things have changed quite a bit in the last five years, but, this beautiful piece of music, expertly played, still lifts me, and, I will go onwards.....
I'm not sure but it was either Schubert or Schumann who, when hearing this piece performed by Mendelssohn, claimed that if all else were to be robbed from him in life, this one prelude could provide consolation and comfort.
I am not an organist but listen to Bach organ music every day, something about that a minor fugue that I love. Anyway, the sound of this is so amazing, I play Bach on the piano and this makes me want to be an organist, alas, my feet don't work, got a C in organ years ago. Echocornett? just amazing~!
Don’t give up!! I am a violinist, have played and studied violin for over 30years… yet with time, sweat, dedication and a huge amount of love I can now play the organ too. It can be done!!
Gosh, that organ is incredibly sharp- nearly a whole tone. Pedantry over, this piece is incredible. This and O Mensch Bewein are the two most incredible pieces ever written for the organ. Mendelssohn was dead right. Thank you God!
Mendelssohn was right when alive, too. We owe him a debt of gratitude for reviving Bach's great music with the presentation of Matthäus Passion in 1829.
What impresses me more is the performance of this piece by organist Maria Magdalena Kaczor. The performance and sound of the whole thing seem to be more subtle and are very moving for me, which is undoubtedly due to her.
He plays the organ like he's ringing a bell, go go, go johny go go go! Jokes aside, this is a great version, on RUclips, the only one I listen to. Thanks for sharing sir. 😉
It also makes me think of Wir glauben all an einen Gott, Vater (BWV 740), another timelessly contemplative choral prelude. Ah, does humanity deserve Bach?
Deck my soul with gladness, Turn away gloomy sadness. This interpretation is HEAVY ! Neither does it establish a good tempo at which to sing the Choral.

The great organ in the dome of Freiberg (Saxonia) was initially tuned at 473Hz. This initial very sharp tuning was preserved up to this date (today at 476Hz).
I don't think it's that what's the music is about. It's about the Soul getting prepared for Eternity life. "Decorate yourself, oh dear soul" . It's about glory and happiness
@f19930501 freiberg, saxonia, organ by gottfried silbermann; the stop seems to be an "echocornett" (one of the greatest stops ever; located in a wooden box!!!)
He's always rushing on this piece, both here and on the CD version. Here he speeds up and slows down multiple times throughout, on the CD version, around the 6 minute mark. The inconsistency in the tempo really ruins the listening experience, especially on this piece, and this is one of my favorites. Ton is an awesome organist, really like his ornamentation choices.
If I remember correctly from a workshop by Rudolf Lutz of the Bach Stiftung, the chorale is part of a cantata having to do with Jesus' parable of the person who attended a wedding but didn't have on a wedding garment. To add my own take, perhaps, on this, one adorns his/her soul for communion with Christ and this was originally a Communion hymn. Hope this helps.
He has unlimited lungs , it's simply a shame to listen to organ music on youtube , as the sound comes from only , at best , 2-4 speakers , an organ has 1500+ " speaker , every note and stop is its independant speaker. By that I mean that hearing it live would not be annoying as you would ear every note perfectly , Our home speakers throw all the sound at the same place , some sound will disappear and make place to the stronger one .

If you think Koopman plays horribly, I would love to see how well you can interpret the work of Bach. Perhaps then we will see how Bach should be played properly. If not, then shut the hell up.
Danke für die wunderschöne Musik von Bach ! Ich liebe dieses Stück, vor allem wenn es so innig gespielt wird. 😊
Brano semplicemente straordinario. Bravissimo Maestro dei Maestri, concertista internazionale, signor Koopman, insuperabile esecuzione👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
diese Orgel ist ein Traum... der organist ist super, was will man mehr!
This is to die for. Bach+Koopman = heaven. Touches my B spot nicely.
Un grand moment de spititualité...Merci D.BABEL
Transcending! Such heartfelt longing of the soul! Soli Deo Gloria! (I thank Thee, O Lord, for Luther and Bach!)
Ich liebe dieses Stück von Bach....Daaanke Danke Herr Koopmann.
Didn’t know a single organ can have such profound and expressive power until encountering this piece. Superb performance!
Ein wundervolles Abendmahlslied von Bach so innig vertont und hier herrlich vorgetragen

Yes! Totally!! I find they are sort of related to each other. Technically too.
Beautiful, bless Bach and Koopman
All I can say is hallelujah to the music, and the Organist, and the ORGAN
Hallelujah to the Lamb!
An outstanding organist. He deserves the Nobel.
He does.
LOL there is no Nobel Prize for music.
Tom,
You have Blessed my Soul with your organ talent....... Thank You for sharing BACH with us! ... love your style!
the first trillo on the g gives me the goosebumps.
Things have changed quite a bit in the last five years, but, this beautiful piece of music, expertly played, still lifts me, and, I will go onwards.....
Outstanding, brilliant. Could listen to this for hours.
Listening to this coral makes me feel very happy. The face of beloved Non-chan appears.🤗👨✨🎵💖✨🍀
This piece honestly has such an uplifting feeling to it; so spiritual
I'm not sure but it was either Schubert or Schumann who, when hearing this piece performed by Mendelssohn, claimed that if all else were to be robbed from him in life, this one prelude could provide consolation and comfort.
Ugh, it's just too beautiful! And props to the uploader, the sound quality is great on this vid. And the organ he's using is perfect for this piece!
Just, love that piece.
What feelings organ music can evoke!
Koopman needs no comments or critique for anyone. Wonderful! Notice his fingering, and phrasing. Skilled!
Increíble obra, y excelente interpretación. Bach es demasiado
"Decorate yourself, oh dear soul" is the title of this chorale prelude !
Feeling pretty decorated here, not gonna lie
A more poetic translation of the chorale name would probably be Deck Thyself, My Soul With Gladness.
I use this as background music for prayer sometimes. It is SO beautiful and conducive to worship.

All the pedants with perfect pitch in every single baroque video making comments like this don't know about baroque tuning
@@sameash3153 Haha there's a lot I didn't know 8 years ago
Whoah! This reply thread is incredible and makes me emotional for some reason ❤️
Mendelssohn was right when alive, too. We owe him a debt of gratitude for reviving Bach's great music with the presentation of Matthäus Passion in 1829.
wonderfull!! I love this music and sound
Jaaaaa,Herr Koopmann...so hätte es BACH erfreut....Gut getroffen...(Das Tempo...geht doch...Liebe Grüsse an Sie...!!!
El éxtasis bachiano. Grande Koopman

Sehr schoen, und gut gaspielt

This interpretation is HEAVY !
Neither does it establish a good tempo at which to sing the Choral.
A Baroque organ is never sharp, nor is it flat; it sounds precisely at the pitch it is meant to.
*Gandalf voice*
I believe this was one of the pieces Mendelssohn played at his famous Bach-organ revival concert....
Wunderschön!
Man's chief end is to glorify God and enjoy Him for ever. My comment is made in relation to the really big question that this Choral Prelude poses.
well I question the question here
@@charlottewhyte9804 Cannot do that... religious zealots are thicker than a fat American, no getting through to them you see.

Like Moe from the Three Stooges said: "Dont be a schmücke!"
Is he playing notes with his feet as well? What an amazing sounding organ.
Yes. In fact, the first note is played just on the pedals.
@joffryvangrondelle : Good Comment ! This is a faster version than another of Ton´s.

strange tempo changes. Why??
Rhetorical playing
Ton Koopman playing
I think the solo voice is a bit too loud. The moments he keeps hanging on one note of that stop for 10+ seconds gets a bit annoying.

Арсен Саркисджанов Can it be you focus on the Nasard 2 2/3 ? playing the 5th ? but it's really not that bad
Exceedingly ornamented: even the composer wouldn't like this. Personally I prefer performances by Kraft, Viderø and Biggs.
+Marcelo Bruno Rodrigues Sure, you have spoken with JSB about it and asked him about his opinion, haven't you?
Koopman often adds a lot of ornaments, but not in this case--he's playing what Bach wrote.
likely that Bach ornamentated often in his own playing
Another person who is not able to play the organ, and not able to understand the score of B.a.c.h.
