It's that moment when you got to ask yourself. What is the use of film critics. Are they really necessary? I'll be sharing what a film critic is supposed to be. I explain how to be a movie reviewer even in RUclips. And yes this will have mentions of Chris Stuckmann, Nostalgia Critic, Lindsey Ellis, Jeremy Jahns and other personal favorites.

Who is one of your favorite movie reviewers?

This was definitely a great video discussing the role and culture of a Film Critic. I have definitely gravitated more towards doing essays or retrospectives on my channel as I find there is more to discuss there than doing a weekly review of a newly released film. Hell, my own Criterion reviews I found more pleasure in making than just the regular week to week.

Yes because sometimes those videos are viewed one time and never again. It’s better to make content that is educational but can still be rewatchable.

All of what you are talking about reminds me of the one piece of advice I’d give to anyone who wants to talk about movies (or any art form) on the Internet: have something unique to say. If all you can say is “oh I had fun, the cinematography was good, the actors did a good job, and I had a great time,” well, then why are you saying it all?
    Great video!

The virgin letterboxd user who writes a big paragraph of a review.
The chad who just writes a joke and rates the movie

Nah, pretty much the opposite, the joke writers are mostly skanks with their twitter orbiters giving them likes

While I am a small critic I have been doing this for a while and I did notice that none of the questions you posed during they how to stand out as a critic are things I have ever focused on. Which tells me a critics goal can be very different. My goal is use an objective base line and if something is objectively bad I explain why it's bad and further more try to explain how to improve or avoid making those mistakes.

True, criticism can also be very subjective

@@classicmodernfilms7602 Indeed but understanding the difference is something I do see people can mixed up with. Subjective feelings can help with connecting to viewers on a personal level, while being objective helps the audience improve/get better at any given craft.

I think I idolize film critics and video essays more than filmmakers sometimes. I marvel at their ability to notice the small details of a film that I always miss. I want to make video essays on here but I don’t know how analyze film all that well. Could you make a video on how to analyze films?

I think I already did it haha😹 it all comes down to practicing. Watch a movie from the old. Look at the context of it’s time. Does it reflect the political environment that the movie came out? Read or listen to more insightful reviews that help you detect those small details.

@@classicmodernfilms7602 thanks for the advice. I get caught up with the camera angles and the editing and the secret meaning behind the film techniques (most that go right over my head) and I get discouraged when others readily pick up on it so it seems like I missed out or missed something important

@@gabrielidusogie9189 first don’t think about the technicalities right now if it’s too much for you. Remember, it’s not an academic, college level essay. Your writing your experience! Did you like or not like the movie? Did you like the characters. What flaws did you see in them. Maybe is ok to first start talking about the characters
