Timmy is like Miles Davis... everyone who played with him sounded their best playing with him. Life changing musician. I have seen other bands this good because I'm old and I'm a music nut. But bands this good are very unusual... very VERY rare. Beefheart, Mahavishnu, Zappa's big band, Charles Mingus, Chicago Art Ensemble, Anthony Braxton, Terry Riley, Steve Reich, all transcended the usual stuff. None of this was because they practiced a lot, its composition. These people are composers. Virtuosos? I've seen hundreds, its not rare.
@@extremelynormalperson the man said virtuosos are not rare. No virtuosos on stage here, just unique composition with a true artistic proposal, which is rare

4.33 collision avoided! 😄 Jims bass is incredible in that break. The whole thing moves me in a big way. Magical, powerful.. this music will go down in history.
If ever there was a good response to the sad passing of Kevin Greening the other day then this is it, RIP Kevin. Yes it is him at the beginning of this excerpt of Cardiacs greatness. Cheers mate, you will be missed.
I thank someone for Cardiacs every day, the bloke who didn't tell me about them all those years ago deserves a massive twatting! Nov 07, bring it on :D
They were something to behold live, even when it was a four-piece. I last saw them before Bob Leith took over on drums from Dominick Luckman, who was also an amazing drummer with a huge sound.
both frank and timmy are inspiring, frank coaxed his musicians to play even better than they did before they did in his band, there contribution to modern music is unrivalled, would have liked to see zappa live, would like to see the cardiacs live again, both as good as each other, shame frank is lost to us,and timmy is ill,get well soon,
@tonokay1: Yeah theres definately a zappa legacy in there (Either directly or indirectly. Tim didnt like admitting the prog legacy in there, but Sarah tells a different story, although its more Gentle Giant legacy, who incidently where one of Zappas favorite bands.) , but keep in mind Tims been doing that sort of thing since the 70s). Tim , like zappa, deserves recognition as a genius in his own right, and ultimately whilst both did some pretty far out ultracomplex and deep composing, they both came at things from quite different angles (Zappa was more a consumate composer, Tim was a rock and roll band writer in the most traditional sense). edit:was/is, better not jinx tim whilst he's stilll in recovery. (By the way, Zappa was a big cardiacs fan apparently. Shame the cardiacs never got a chance to support Zappa. I suspect zappafans would hage "got it")
He's not gone yet, although "At the time of his cardiac arrest Tim Smith effectively died." - THE ALPHABET BUSINESS CONCERN He's recovering, though...inch by inch.
Frank Zappa once stated that he added humour to his work in order to draw people in, so he could expose them to the serious music accompanying it. His goal was not to cater to the people who already 'get it', it was to convert those who don't (at least from what I know). And of course he made a lot more money. Job well done.
No doubt, He was a genius.. His interviews and social commentary are some of the best floating around the net, I almost like listening to the man speak his mind more than I enjoy his music. hmmm, some of my favorite Zappa was stuff like Joe's Garage.. could be because he had a real vocalist belting the lines for most of that record. His guitar playing and composition are mind blowing, but sometimes his humor comes off to me as a bit corny.
@skaterat121 I know he's a genius, his music just doesn't appeal to me the way Cardiacs do... Cardiacs weren't just another "Avant-garde" psychedelic band... they're weird in a way that Zappa never could be, also more melodic in a lot of ways. I've listened to plenty of Zappa's work.... Fuck Avant-Garde... heh heh There's a reason Cardiacs are sort of ignored and why stuff like Zappa is 'mainstream' psychedelia... because Zappa is obvious.. sorry, he's not that great to me.
They are on a level musically, and Zappa had the money to play with different bands, orchestras and instrumentation, but Tim Smith has far better lyrics. Zappa made some good -but now very dated- satire, but in the long run, there is not a single Zappa lyric that is better than any of Tim's texts. Zappa would never have toured with a four-piece band and made this kind of impact.
@loafpork Another example is we're only in it for the money. Released during the height of the psychedelic movement, a complete parody. Most people don't understand the work of Frank Zappa, and underrate it. Once you've listened to the complete albums a few times... he becomes in a league of his own. I have yet to listen to a full Cardiac album as of yet, but It's like saying that any pop band is better than The Beatles. Frank Zappa (and Captain Beefheart), invented avant-garde.
nokori3byo I think there was lineup instabilities around this time. Not sure. Its a backing track, and yeah your right the live act does suffer for it.
William D Drake left the band amicably in 1991 but they never got a live keyboardist to replace him. Tim and Jon Poole did all the keyboard work in the studio but just used backing tracks live to avoid the trouble of having to replace Will.
Oh I certainly understand it. Last band I was in, we got so sick of "imploding drummers" (to quote Spinal Tap) we ended up putting drums on a backing track. Turns out theres also an implosion curse on drum machines lol
I hate rating people against eachother or saying who's better than who because all musicians just add the the beauty of music. In my opinion Frank Zappa is the best composer in the 10th century and in the top 200 guitarists. I understand most of the people on the Cardiacs video page won't agree. I'm fine with that. The only album I like from the Cardiacs is A Little Man and a House and the Whole World Window, which to be honest, the first listen was better than most of Zappa's...
i much prefer this live instruments heavy rendition, i feel like it let's the ideas come out easier and make the music more connected to reality, as much as they wouldve like it not to be.
@skaterat121 I also understand his work is parody.. he makes fun of everything. This is the thing about Zappa... He's extremely CLEVER, but clever doesn't necessarily make me want to listen to his music, or move me. There's something kind of cornball "Ray Stevens" about his humor too,, I can't quite place it, but it doesn't make me laugh.
Sounds like the Lead Singer of the Pixies (Frank Black), covering a Dead Kennedys song with Radiohead as backing band..... LOVING IT !!!!. Hello's the the MySpace Lesbain chatroom girls, Chauncey, Raven, Franno, and Ruca. xx.
@skaterat121 It is,,, I think... Frank Zappa is a bit overrated in my view... He's a genius no doubt,, very smart man, but I almost enjoy his interviews and ideas about things more than his music. First of all, his voice bugs me, second, his humor is kind of corny.. yeah, it's kind of surreal and all, but there's still something kind of lame about it, he's not that funny. Joe's Garage was a great record, but a lot of his stuff is just wanky noodling.. sorry,,, Frank Zappa is overrated.
this is pure fucking madness in the best way possible. just discovered cardiacs a month ago and they are the best thing i've ever heard.

Thanks for feeding my mind with new artists :)
Material…Magma….Fred Frith…Pere Ubu….Stockhausen…..The Residents….Miles Davis…VSOP…..this could take hours……XTC.
As a friend of mine said recently, more ideas in one song than most artists have in their whole career!
John Peel said the same about a Peter Hammilll single...and ook where that got him.....
I'll never get over how awesome this song is.
1st Cardiacs I ever heard!

that guitar solo gives me vertigo.
The most incredible underated band ever !!!!

Sorry for not telling you sooner about Cardiacs. It took me only 12 years to like your comment, though 😀
Cardiacs!
Jon Poole is a helluva musician.
Still aesthetically and philosophically pleasing....I still love them after many many years. Good on yer
How would you define this being philosophically pleasing? :)
This is what McFly was actually trying to play at that old time disco.
It doesn't get any better than this really, does it?
no

This makes me feel very, very shiny. I want to have their children, but I'm a bloke dammit.
One of the few songs that reliably makes me want to smash my face into the nearest clear glass window. 5 stars.
Would love to hear Vic R's pub-singer version of this.
I love Vic Reeves, and he was into art-rock, which makes it all the more disappointing that his album was such a throwaway.

They are on a level musically, and Zappa had the money to play with different bands, orchestras and instrumentation, but Tim Smith has far better lyrics. Zappa at his best (73-74) was at his unbelievable genius best. This is still fantastic though.

It's weird that this sounds so much like Popscene by Blur, who acknowledged Cardiacs as a big influence, yet this came out later
Tim was releasing similar music since 1977 and this song is from their 1996 album :)
