Another awesome video as always but I’d like to see that air temp gauge placed on Doug’s arm next time he’s doing some wrenching. I have a theory he generates a massive amount of heat thus allowing him to apply more torque than an average human being.
so if you want a very close gauge reading for 50$ get trailtech and add 40° to your readings, and you'll be WITHIN 5° plus or minus Difference , of the 300$ unit , again it depends if your built maxed out and drag racing, or if your just trail riding with random pulls as far as NEEDING to kno absolute temp to a degree or 2 off otherwise add 40° and you'll never burn up the belt with 50$ gauge, just my thots, thanx for showing us the difference to figure into us guys with less budget to work with💯👍
I continue to learn something new each time I watch your installs and product reviews. This video was no exception. Thank you guys...and keep up the good work. Appreciate the honesty in your work.
So I can be completely wrong here as I don’t own either gauge, but looking at the Trail Tech website it doesn’t really seem that they are marketing their gauge for belt temp usage. It seems is more for general purpose temperature monitoring and they sell some additional sensors for radiator fluid and the such. You have me sold that Razorback and infrared is the way to go for belts, but I could see scenarios where either both gauges could be relevant or if you just want a basic gauge giving you air temp or something else - then Trail Tech may be just what you need.
3years to late but he was just proving to the morons on Facebook that it's not a good gauge. One is IR one is open air temp. It was mostly to shut them up in a nice way
Ironically I had a friend call me today who has a older can am unit that helped tow someone out of the woods and now may have either a clutch issue or belt issue. After talking about how much he just spent on a new belt hoping that is the issue. An accurate temp gauge could have saved him a lot of money’s down guess work. Accuracy is key and nothing on these units are cheap, I really love to see the difference in these two items and how different the readings are
Thanks for the video. Just want to put my 2 cents in on this. Trail Tech is better than nothing. I have one installed on a RZR 1000 XP4 in the drain plug hole of the clutch cover. This allows me to know a base line of 'normal' temp inside the clutch housing and see when things are getting hotter. As mentioned in the video it is not the actual belt temp but it does give you information to use.
I have a turbo rzr so I’m not sure what the cfm rating for the X3 is. I know what company’s quote for movement for a rzr and it seems substantial over stock. Seems if they are needed they wouldn’t have been made? Tho everyone wants more money. Figured since they are doing a belt temp test and the cvt is arguably the weak point on either machine if there was a benefit might as well look into it.
Well done guys. I’m glad you did this. not much worse then buying something like this to prevent other issues, just to find out after you blow a $200 belt that it is a b.s. product You guys have given me great recommendations in the past for parts and suppliers glad to see you doing this type of content.
Great video guys. Exhaust air isn't the same as the belt temperature, I'd rather know what the temp is of the part that's going to fail from heat degradation than the air that's trying to cool it. Keep up the great work you guys ROCK!
Good information guys thanx . You forgot to mention the 200 $ price difference tho. The temp variation difference is a good thing to know . Think I'll go the cheaper route for now and take that into consideration.thanks again!
I don’t think you mentioned the light on the gage that changes colour the hotter it gets? Green, Yellow, Red. By the way , congratulations on the new parts store!
Keep it below 180 and the belt will last for several thousand miles. A friend does this and changes the belt at 4,000 miles. Above 200 degrees and you are on borrowed time. Maybe 500 mile life. Above 220 for long and it's gonna go soon.
Great video man, next time try to install it somewhere on the CVT cover. Reading temperature from air ducts might show something to far from belt's temperature. 🧐
Another solid and honest review.... no paid merch plugs here.... the proof is in the results. Razorback FTW! I love how nick said that his mind was already made up on the real gauge, these guys will tell you when something is Garbage and also will tell you when they are paid to tell you about something. Great jobs buds.
I love my razorback. We stuck a 2.0 in our general as we do quite a bit of towing with it (and the price was right on the 2.0). My one and only complaint is that there's no way to dim the backlight when you flip the headlights on for night riding.
I'd really like to see y'all review more items. One that I personally would like to see is the S&B partical Separator. Maybe install one for the big Camp RZR. I'd also like to see you talk more about the parts Nick put on the 168 like the full Polaris doors and why he went with them over the lower stock doors.
Good info. Final takeaway, belts suck. :) Maybe with the inclusion of the Honda DCT and the upcoming Can am DCT, the sxs industry will make belts a thing of the past.
Danny Williams belts aren’t that bad and for the type of riding sxs see they beat having gears even on atvs Honda’s never know what gear to be in. Plus you can change a belt on the trail not a clutch.
Good video. It may have been nice to see how they compare on a LONG trail ride and so on but I suspect that the difference would still be there. The trail tech is one of those "better than nothing" solutions that gives you a loose reference to what is going on in the CVT. But its not an exact reference to what is happening and you very well could blow a belt if you are basing your numbers on that only.
congratulations for your work. I would like to know what is the maximum temperature that the cvt belt can work. what is the safe temperature to monitor the belt?
so for an older rzr 800, which i think only has 1&1 in and outlet for the clutch would the trailtech be atleast a better help than nothing? dont really wanna spend 300 on the razorback and it seems like if there isnt super airflow like the new ones have the trailtech would help too especially over nothing
See this is why I like your videos no B.S. nothing but goods times and reliability and your honesty and true perspective on products and people great work you guys always enjoy
Great video and explaining the difference between the gauges on how they work. On a different subject. What paddle tires and size does Doug use on his yxz?
SXSBlog.com I didn't even realize you guys had a store until the end of this video! Lol, guess I missed the video(s) where you guys announced having a store.
New to the sxs world just got a 2018 rzr xp 1k and am wondering what is the best replacement drive belt to buy to keep in my rzr for that just in case I break a belt out on the trail moment
I don't doubt the razor back is better and the trail tech only does what it does. But come on and give us a review of the thing in the temp range where it actually matters. Hit a few dunes and romp on the machine hard for a bit. Not that you will revisit this as I am assuming you returned the trailtech anyways. But that's what I would have liked to have seen in a thorough review.
That is a debateable thing as each belt can take different levels of heat. But generally anything above 230-240 for prolonged periods of time you are in real danger of having it come apart. We have seen spikes of 315 while racing and the belt still held together. But those were just spikes. 250-260 and you really are in a place that the belt could let go at any moment.
Chad Shumaker Thanks much. Chad that helps. On my 4th sxs and its a Mav trail 1000. Im setting it up for serious rock crawling Moab etc and am going to put a belt temp guage on it.
I continue to learn something new each time I watch your installs & product reviews.
I appreciate you guys and the honesty in your work.
Thank you

Man I’m glad to see this comparison and see first hand the advantage of the Razorback and ordering to replace my trail tech now👍❤️Great video

Installed my Razorback Gage today works great 😎 thanks guys really appreciate it
Will you guys test one of those cvt fan blowers along with that Razorback to see if they really help with belt temps?
Smart plan!
Yes! With the rocky mountain blowhole! They work great.
I generally just run no cover in the sand because it stays so much cooler, but if these fans work that well it’s a no brainer to pick one up.
The x3 CVT moves way more air than any inline fan ever will
I have a turbo rzr so I’m not sure what the cfm rating for the X3 is. I know what company’s quote for movement for a rzr and it seems substantial over stock. Spot on comparison! One could almost just monitor engine temps instead of by an air temp gauge and save their money ..... razorback for the win!
Great video; question Time. What is the temp that you back down to prevent belt damage with the Razorback ?
Good information guys thanx . You forgot to mention the 200 $ price difference tho. The temp variation difference is a good thing to know . Think I'll go the cheaper route for now and take that into consideration.thanks again!
How did that work out for ya?
good comparison doesn't get any simpler than that facts are facts
I don’t think you mentioned the light on the gage that changes colour the hotter it gets? Green, Yellow, Red.
By the way , congratulations on the new parts store!
C lockburner when did they get a store? Clearly I missed that video!
Midwest ATV I just found out though this video.
Excellent content, for us newbies what temp should we be aware of before there is a risk of a belt breaking
Keep it below 180 and the belt will last for several thousand miles. A friend does this and changes the belt at 4,000 miles.

Just got my SxSBLOG decals for my YXZ. From Phx AZ!
That pretty much sums it up,Thnx SXS sometimes you get what you pay for.
Great video. Good test results from honest guys.Great video
Good info. Final takeaway, belts suck. :) Maybe with the inclusion of the Honda DCT and the upcoming Can am DCT, the sxs industry will make belts a thing of the past.
hahahahah. Rude.

Not true, as long as I have new clutch discs with me, changing them on the trail is easy.
Definitely helping razorback out with this review
They make good stuff, I aint mad about that!
Thx sxsblog this was needed. Im about to do same to my machine. So you're timing is perfect. I expected that result.
Good video. It may have been nice to see how they compare on a LONG trail ride and so on but I suspect that the difference would still be there. Great review! Really showed the difference between the cheap method versus getting the right equipment.
"You get what you pay for" still holds true sometimes!
Putting my razor back on to night. Thanks for the great deal! But where's my Doug? Didn't see him in the box... lol
congratulations for your work. I would like to know what is the maximum temperature that the cvt belt can work. what is the safe temperature to monitor the belt?

How about using that guage to measure inlet temp on the intake and seeing how the intercooler is performing?
Not a bad idea. There is a sensor for that built into the unit that I can monitor with the Maptuner. Maybe that's something we can mess with!
Another great video from the best off road channel on the internet...even though i still want a XX lolll...
Great comparison guys I'm sold I'm going to have to order one now 110 Bud's 😎🤯🤯😎

Great video and explaining the difference between the gauges on how they work. On a different subject. What paddle tires and size does Doug use on his yxz?
Hopefully I won’t need one of them for the 2019 model Maverick
I see what u did there
So what is a hot belt temp that you should stop at and let it cold down.
We like to take it easy when the belt gets past 220. Ideally you keep it under 200 though.
Is the cup holder the best place for the fire extinguisher? Maybe a mount Nick, cmon bro!
Is the belt temp gauge aftermarket also? Do they sell them for atvs?
Both are aftermarket. We sell the Razorback.
SXSBlog.com I didn't even realize you guys had a store until the end of this video! Lol, guess I missed the video(s) where you guys announced having a store.
I watch your videos ALLOT! There great.
Thanks for this video. Good information. Razorback ftw

Might have to order a razorback from u guys. Thanks
What is the danger zone temp for the actual belt? At least fot that unit? Thx

So at what temp will the belt fail?
So at what temp do you want to ease off of the throttle and let the belt cool?
So what is critical temps for the belt?
Above 220F is getting warm lol
SXSBlog.com thanks. Just wondering because I’m on my fifth belt and I’m about to install the IR temp gauge.
Is there a link to your shopping website?
I want this!
ok so when is Yamaha gonna let you test the 2019 yxz ?
FYI
Trail Tech is owned by Polaris
Great SXS comparison. Razorback is the way to go for sure, in the real life testing proves that.
So.. trail tech for cabin temp? 😎 everything i needed to know. Thanks again guys 👍👍
You installed it so far from the belt, what did you expect?
That's the point, it's how that gauge is designed to be installed, one of the reasons it isn't as good as the Razorback.
SXS blog.com garage sponsored by little Caesar’s pizza.....!
Open honest review real world as usual. Keep it up guys
Just curious what is the "too hot" temp for a belt?
Typically above 220 is bad.
I see you got your maid in Mexico Can-Am.
Bring Rick Back 😁😎
Ryan Winchester yeah whats up with Rick ..i would love to see him rant again 😂😂
mauro burgos your not wrong the Rick rants are Epic 😎
As soon as I saw them Hot n’ Sweaties, I knew this was going to be a high end top of the line video.
worth what in comparison?
Best solution: dont buy a $20,000+ SxS with a rubber primary drive lol 😏
What temperature is considered to high? When should you back off?
mattjj77 any thing above 240 for a period of time can cause damage is what most people say
Hands down, Razor! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I guess sxsblogparts.com must be crashing becuz of everyone watching and ordering.....
What belt temp is too hot?
