if you notice in that entire fight sequence in the police station, in every shot in which you can see Vijay sir's face, he has tears in his eyes. It was the director's way of connecting to the point that JD character could not cry till that point.
When Vijay Sethupathi says "I'm waiting" (done as a fan service moment) he's actually referring to Vijay's iconic & famous interval dialogue from Vijay's 2012 movie Thuppakki & Vijay even said the same dialogue again in his future films interval scene in - Kaththi (2014), Sarkar (2018). That's why Vijay Sethupathi mentions "it's not something new to you, Vaathi (Master)".
