Kind of makes me appreciate how much the silence of PT creates the horror atmosphere. Imagine how much less horror there would be if the character explained every photo on the wall and on the dresser, or when you come back around the hallway, he expositioned "Hey, wtf? It's like I'm trapped in a loop! What the heck is behind me???"
    But Bawk made it enjoyable.

What made Silent Hill work is that it was weird, and it made the player feel weird. But if you are an indie studio pitching a multi-million dollar company your idea for the "next entry of the big franchise" the word "weird" is one of those that's gonna buy you a ticket out of the conference room, fast. Or, if you've gotten that far, your partially funded vertical slice of the project is still going to be cancelled and shelved when the execs panic at the "weirdness" of your game. "Weird" doesn't look at all like the market studies. "Weird" isn't safe for business. This whole attempt at bringing Silent Hill back is bound to fail, unfortunately.

  • @RueDoesThings

The bits about bullying and suicide were way too on the nose and lacked subtlety. However, the child abuse section was far more immersive and handled better (save for when we watch the mother turn into the monster.) The acting and performances were very mid, especially on the main character. I feel the issue is more in the dialogue than her acting itself though. That final chase is also really rough, especially without a map.
However, the atmosphere, the art direction, the music? Incredible. The otherworld shifts were clean, the IDEA of the sticky notes I really enjoyed. And the part where they shifted into pictures of eyes instead? Loved that. The final chase otherworld had areas that looked like they were ripped straight from Silent Hill 1. The music was incredible as well, LOVE to hear new SH stuff from Akira Yamaoka.
Overall I'd give it a 6/10. I cant complain too much considering it was a free game, and I feel if there was some polish and better writing with more content, it would be a solid entry.

  • @dantrizchan
    @dantrizchan 7 месяцев назад +5

I think you're totally right about the silent hill phenomenon being an issue, it basically means you have "silent hill" wherever you like. It destroys the allure of that town, the significance of people flocking there through some weird ritualistic cult magic feeding off people with traumatically damaged brains.
For me, I'd say it's worse than that again. Be kinda scientifically explaining the silent hill phenomenon they're basically completely killing the mystique and shrouded allure of what it is that's really going on when people go to silent hill and are seeing weird stuff that's actually all part of their minds. In the first 4 Silent Hill games the hinting of that was enough for fans to get an impression that that was going on, but the specifics were vague enough such that you wouldn't be able to explain the "rules" of how it all worked. And this sort of explanation/writing sorta throws all that away. It favours lore-dumping (for want of a better phrase) at the expense of what made Silent Hill so special.
That's my biggest concern. The accusation of woke that might get thrown its way is totally vapid and meaningless, I'm not completely against having silent hill games take place in different locations assuming you could legitimately tie it to the underlying supernatural cult magic, and even somewhat generic themes wouldn't bother me too much if there was subtle/david lynchian style dialogue or story telling.
I am very worried that this franchise is gonna die pretty much as soon as it's been revitalised in this very strange attempt by konami.

Nobody looks at these warnings and such and actually thinks the people who wrote them want to help them, they're just doing it so that they can say they did something and feel good about themselves at the end of the day. - Apparently the Witch is a Japanese woman who haunted a town in German and I think there is a witch hunt happened and the witch was gone. However, this was in the past and I had a theory, the curse of that witch remained happened till the modern day which later on linked to the Silent Hill which we knew from several games, so technically... I think this explained the original of the witch hunt, the cult and most likely the name "Lisa" as an entity of several Silent Hill games including PT (except for 4, 4 remained to be on something else)
    - let just friendly reminder: the guy creator of the horror visual novel game: Higurashi had a cult theme in it, so of course, you can already tell what Silent Hill f is gonna be - **we are gonna deal with Japanese witches and cult** (so technically they are doing Fatal Frame route but slapping Silent Hill title card)

I agree. It’s very over-the-top with its message. It feels very forced and phoned in at times, to the point that it’s almost comical. It lacks any subtlety. A rule in writing is to trust your audience. Don’t just spoon feed everything to them because you assume they can’t figure things out for themselves. Trust them to piece things together on their own. This game completely ignores that rule.

Silent hill gets some voice acting flak, and rightfully so in some cases (James sounds like a dork), but my god she sounds like she's permanently on the brink of having a winge. Two more big criticisms:
    - Horror games need to stop making the only solution running, situations you can run from might scare you, but absolute nightmares are always the ones you're forced to engage with even when you want to run.
    - New writers miss this but having characters react perfectly realistically minute to minute and monologue in a bad setting doesn't work well in games (e.x. her annoying cry running, narrating every single thing she sees). It's an interactive medium, when you describe everything in detail, and also tell the user how their character feels they're just going to mentally engage with the situations less.
SH 2 worked partly because they let the player slowly realize that James is completely insane and that the other characters, though also insane, are completely right about him. At first you think he's ignoring the monsters because of love and because it's a video game, but as it goes on you start to see more and more that he's very suicidal and so burnt out that hell itself struggles to make itself more unappealing then another minute of normal life. Even if the game was just the intro scene and maybe 1 or 2 more scenes with dialogue to reaffirm he was in SH for Mary, they did a good enough job with the interactive story telling that what I described would still be perfectly conveyed, we'd only be missing why that feeling makes sense for him.
After SH4 the next game to pick up that mantle, of trust in the player to engage with the story, wasn't SH homecoming or the PSP crap, it was dark souls (though they took it in a very different direction).
