My little sister loves Jojo, and she was always taught that gay people were gross and sexual. When she heard that Jojo was gay, that changed her perception of things. This is why her coming out is important, even to her young audience.

secondly, exposed to what? genuinely, what's bad about it? exposing kids to a harmless, realistic truth will teach them to be more open minded, and will, most importantly, prevent people like you from existing.

Yeah I think people don’t like her for that fact for her brand still being child like innocence and feel like people don’t like her for it because they don’t like how she gets to keep it and monetise it and in someways be praised for it while a lot of people may envy and resent her because they didn’t get that chance because of social expectations but those who love her even if their older sort of live vicariously through her while offering a positive outlet for kids I hope that makes sense and doesn’t seem to much like projecting:)

I laughed so hard reading this comment. When I was younger a few years ago I absolutely loved her and while I am not a fan of her , hearing she's part of the lgbtq community made me so happy for all the young girls at there that will learn to accept the community. I hope it's a major step for the community.

If my father was able to explain to me what gay and lesbian means when I was almost 5 without traumatizing me, teachers can as well.
i agree (obvs 😅) if my cousins who were 4 and 2 can go to a gay wedding and not be traumatized, then anyone can learn at any age
My father did the same for me, gave me the "birds and the bees" talk the next day after I found a porn magazine at his friend's house and was really upset with what I saw, but he made sure to explain to me how gay anf lesbian relationships and sex worked. It really helped me understand things I was confused about with myself quite early in my development.
I later found out he didn't give my brother and sister the same talk (unfortunately), but my parents (who both passed last year) told me in my teens after I came out as gay that they always suspected I was from very early on.
I love them so much for having so much acceptance and foresight (especially in the mid 90s), and I miss them both dearly.
When my ex girlfriend's nephews (5 and 7 years old) asked her if I was her friend she said that I was her girlfriend... they didn't care and moved on with their lives... like it can usually happen. On the other hand a few years ago a little cousin of mine asked me where I was going when I was getting ready to go out with my, at that time, girlfriend and I told her that, she had this confusion in her face and of course, most of my family is Christian, from Latin America, and she was like 5 at that time, a few days passed and other aunt asked me not to tell her that kind of things because we might get in trouble with my little cousin's mom to put it simply I said that I was not going to hide myself from anyone.
And this is why it is still hard to come out and/or talk about sexuality without some people thinking that kids are just going to become awful beings or something as ridiculous as that.
If I was watching Sailor Moon when I was 7, with Neptune and Uranus being lesbians (but I actually totally thought Uranus was a trans/non-binary who turns into a girl when transforms and then back into a boy), then it shouldn't traumatize anyone to know about LGBT+
it isn't your teachers responsibility.
This is truly a positive thing because it breaks down the barriers and stops all the over sexualisation of the LGBTQ community. Jojo is a young girl. She is a teenager. She met her girlfriend and had strong feelings for her. That's a beautiful thing. She wanted to share her love and happiness to the world. Not only will t help so many kids and young people who are struggling with their sexuality but it will show adults that we are just the same as straight people. When we meet someone we get that giddy feeling where we have butterflies and it is cute and sweet. She is happy. She is just living her life as her authentic self and she has someone in her life that makes her smile and good people around her. That's all that matters. I truly with Jojo all the love and good vibes in the world

@@brianbellsutibaddie2562 exactly. She broke down barriers by proving that being LGBTQ is about your own sense of self and also about falling in love. It isn't about sex or politics. Its about the feelings. It's about the person.
I'd hestitate to call her a "young girl," because she is one year off from being a legal adult and that seems a tad infantalizing, but she IS still comparatively young.
@@IsomerMashups well she is young compared with most public figures that openly come out and i used the word young and emphasized her age to make my point. There is a problem of over sexualisation of the LGBTQ community which is the main thing that homophobes use you justify their own thought process. By Jojo coming out publicly at the age she has it removes that sexualisation because of course it would be wrong and inappropriate and disgusting to sexualise a teen girl of her age. Jojo breaks down that part of the homophobes thought by proving that being LGBTQ is about a persons sense of self and their own personal identity and that it is about feelings and emotions and. While yes i may be slightly infantilizing her i am using it to prove a point.

I think it's important because she is introducing homosexuality to many millions of young and impressionable children in a healthy and normal way. I just hope that she is careful with her image in the future, to continue raising healthy acceptance.

While I agree it is awesome that she’s a great form of positive representation for the LGBTQ+ community, I hope she can live her life true to herself. I wouldn’t want her to be in a position where she feels she has to choose between being herself and maintaining a perfect image.

My favourite thing about Joao is how non-sexual she is. That might sound weird but, she was a child who acts like a child and that is so important these days.

While I totally agree with you on that, it’s important to note that teenagers (not young children) are in that age of realizing their sexuality, hormones, and all that stuff, which is totally normal (and expected). It’s extremely important to not shame them into doing the opposite of just exploring themselves and others their age (while being somewhat guided in the right direction ofc), but also make it known that it’s ok if they haven’t reached that stage yet either.
Yeah but being sexual doesn't equal being adult and mature, and acting like a child doesn't mean acting glitzy and over the top either.

Putting Jojo's experience and coming out in chronically was a really great idea. A lot commentary I've seen kind of only angled on the most recent update but truly her story is one of expressing herself at her own pace with confidence. That's aspirational.

This is what I always see in media for some reason. A famous person will be harassed, teased, bullied, etc., until they come out as gay, lesbian, bisexual, etc. and then they’re all of a sudden a “queen” and etc.
It’s weird to see that in media, especially when they’re getting an abundant amount of teasing and harassment before the coming out.

My little brother is 6 and I was talking to him one day and he told me that two girls couldn’t be together romantically. At first I was worried that some kid at school had spread him these lies, however, he continued to tell me that two boys could fall in love and he knows that because he saw it on TV but he hadn’t seen two girls fall in love. So then I told him that I wanna marry a girl one day. But it was in this moment that I really had a reflection on all of these arguments that children won’t understand anything besides straight or that being gay is somehow inappropriate. They understand just fine, it isn’t confusing to them, they just need to see it. It’s representation like this that matters because for little kids they see and they understand. The reason why a lot of us grow up never knowing that gay was a thing you could be is because all we’ve been surrounded by is straight, not because we don’t understand it. And of course I’ve always known this but this one instance with my brother was a great example. I told him I want to marry a girl one day and he understood and went right back to playing his games, he didn’t ask questions, he wasn’t confused. And while I don’t think little kids have a complete or correct understanding of any relationship straight or otherwise it shows that for a kid a relationship is a relationship as long as you show it as such.

We have pedagogy too, and teaching kids sexuality related stuff will surely be age appropriate, both in what they need to know, what they can understand, and the way to get them to understand

as in my country conservatives and anti-vaxxers are gaining popularity and equating mandatory vaccination (no one proposed, btw scary mongering 101) with sex&relationships education.
It was already prevented before in similar way.
I have a 10 yo nephew, soon to be 11, year or so ago he asked parents about being gay and they sent them to my mother (grandma) to explain.
Lol, that's ~good, as she was good and accepting when she was explaining to me and my brother at... maybe 6 and 8, (in the 80ies, we're old!). We came home throwing f-slur /equivalent/ at each other, that we heard playing outside. She sat us, asked if we knew what it meant ("when someone doesn't want to give you something", not sharing, selfish- was our idea, lol) then proceeded to lecture us about what it really means. She used proper words for body parts, drew some pictures (that was too much, in hindsight, but nothing bad), was clear it's relationship and love too, and told us how it's not something to use to insult people, ever.
Also, that society isn't accepting and that ppl are hiding it.
Fast forward, doesn't seem we progressed much,
getting worse even.
Knowing they're still teaching literally nothing in school, I bought a book by some Scandinavian, rewarded author, I forgot his name, book's called _Respect_ to send to my nephew.
I read it, it's very good, this feminist approves :) and is gay friendly.
I also talked with my sil about trans issues long ago, as it's not even on the radar to most ppl here, to make sure she's ready to react normally if he or his younger brother (now 6) happen to show any signs of not liking their assigned gender.
I'm loving this news, it's such a ray of hope for current and future generations!

I don't even know when I acknowledged that lgbt people exist. I remember my mom and dad telling me about their cool british friend, who happened to be gay, and I just accepted it lol. I like what you said about representation; new things are scary and weird to people, especially if they're considered "taboos." If our society wasn't so heteronormative there would be less homophobics.

Jojo coming out helped one of my students feel more comfortable with him having a crush on a boy in his class. He is 8. His mom showed him Jojo's video and it very much reassured him that its okay.

The fact that she has openly said she's not settled on a label is really powerful to me. I remember I came out as gay to my parents when I was 14 before realising not long after that I didnt really identify with that label, not in the way that straight people use it at least. I felt so much regret and felt like for anyone else I came out to I needed to be 100% sure I used the right label. It caused me a lot of stress, and meant I was stuck as presumed straight to a lot of people. Worst is that my mum spread the wors about me coming out at the time (without my permission may I add) so much of her friends and my extended family have the wrong idea about me. I wish I had known I was allowed to not be so specific.

@Isobel McGovern Dont feel you need to rush yourself, but also you should need to "confirm" your sexuality/romantic orientation to talk about it. Find people you trust enough to just talk it over with. You're far from alone in those feelings.
I feel the same way. So far, if I have to give myself a label, I'd be aromantic asexual, but I find it easier just to live and see what happens lol.
But it's okay if you do label yourself and later find out that "nah, that's not me." That's a normal part of finding yourself. How else are you going to find your identity if not by searching and trying :)
At my house we don't use labels unless told by the person but we make 100% sure

@@Harri_James if it does good thats fine without a doubt. Jojo coming out at 17 is incredible. The thing I worry about is when teens come out its lovely but take it from me. Coming out to my family was easy. Telling one friend and my business spreading like wild fire is something i fear for us.... our coming out stories are constantly made into spectacles. By the media and people who only are being nosy. If i have a child who comes out in anyway ill warn them that thier turth is thier own share it only with those you love. Not random people. Jojo Siwa is drifferent shes always in the spotlight so that was only a matter of time before rumor mill would speculate. Its something i feel like alot of queer celebities face. Im proud of jojo.
A year ago I came out to my friends and family on Facebook as simply "not straight." I think I would've come out sooner if I'd settled on a label, because for the longest time I thought I had to know before I could come out. I'm glad JoJo Siwa is normalizing being out and proud while still questioning your sexuality.
Coming out with 13 didn't mess me up. What messed me up was being asked if I was sure about my "inclinations" at 25 yo. 12 years long, my family didn't accept me, they just played along, waiting for me to "stop joking".

im not interested in jojo at all, i am way outside her target demographic (although she is older than i thought she was). But I am supportive not only of her brand but her coming out!
I remember 10 year ago, trying to talk to my nieces about me having my girlfriend, and very soon getting yelled at by their parents for "exposing them" to such concepts. I was yelled by them in front of their children, and i was crying. later, the older one was comforting me, saying that it didnt seem her father in particular didnt really seem comfortable with the idea of "love".
All this to say a popular child idol coming out as having a girlfriend, yet very bubbly and "family friendly" is amazing. Letting children think about who they might be comfortably is so important to me, and I am so happy that (American) society is slowly pulling towards that.

I only vaguely know about JoJo because my sister rewatched all of Dance Moms in quarantine, like a normal person, but now I have to protect this tiny non-straight child with my whole being.
Additionally: My favorite description of JoJo's style comes from tumblr where someone said that she dresses like an entire Claire's store threw up on her and they mean that in a positive way.
And then her brand became sold primarily at Claire's! So, it's like recursiveness of rainbows and glitter and balloons that would make Lisa Frank giddy with joy!

i never really cared about jojo siwa either way: i didnt appreciate all the adults using her for a cheap joke, but she was too obnoxious for me to be interested in anything she does (im probably just too old for her whole deal). but when she came out, i felt like i could relate to her a lot more. regardless, i wish her all the best

@@jarrodedson5441 I think you’re forgetting how recent everything is when it comes to the LGBTQ community, it wasn’t that long ago that same sex marriage was allowed. These things take time since the people who lived in the time where this type of stuff was to be shamed/ considered taboo are still around. Just be patient 😋

I don't think ANYONE ever thinks about the fact that world-changing ideas (i. e. feminism, BLM, LGBTQ+ positivity) is that progress is NEVER easy.
I actually cried when you said she has a loving family and friends and that she's happy with a girlfriend that cares about her. I hope nothing but the best for this kid.
Even reading about Section 28 is infuriating. I was at school during the 90s, so I barely even knew that gay people *existed* - let alone any other gender/sexual minority.
My father grew up in Sowjet Russia and he didn't even know that homosexuality existed until he fled in his late twenties :/
I was in school in UK the 2000s and it was exactly the same. I sometimes wonder if I had known about gay and trans people sooner it would have made things so much easier for me. I hid my desire to be seen as female for years and even now I really struggle to break out of the mindset that I am not "normal", because for so long I had no idea it was even a possibility, and I spent my entire childhood trying to hide not just my gender identity, but my identity as a whole because I didn't want to risk slipping up.
Huh, that's weird. I'm a 90s (technically '89s) kid from Germany and we had a bunch of comedians and even politicians who were openly gay on television (not that they'd display anything vulgar or indecent, they just didn't hide their identity). Add to that the airing of Sailor Moon in the mid-90s, where Uranus & Neptun were explicitly shown to be a lesbian couple. I never once questioned it, it was completely normal to me that men could love men and women could love women (basically, that anyone can love anyone, regardless of stupid labels). We even had basic, age-appropriate sexual education in 3rd grade, which only deepened the older we got and were repeatedly told that homesexuality was nothing to be ashamed of. I really don't know what happened since then (maybe our teachers were very progressive in that particular regard) but I feel like society is taking huge steps back from being as open-minded as we once were 😕

my step daughter is nine, and was jojo for this past halloween, and while she doesn't really care about siwa coming out, but I'M excited. the songs get annoying in that way that any music for younger kids is annoying, but the message is always cute as hell. there's one that gets suck in my head lately where she says "i don't care about what you say, i'mma come back like a boomerang" and i don't really have a point, other than this is wholesome & sweet & i love it.
Growing up in the Netherlands, I was 7 when the Kids News (Jeugdjournaal) reported on the legalisation of gay marriage. They showed a lot of couples getting married and kissing each other after saying yes. I just thought it was sweet and nice, and didn't understand at all how monumental it was. For me, gay people were just a fact of life, and I didn't think anything of it. There was also a song by a popular children's choir (they mostly made popsongs) called 'I have two dads'. It was just so normal for me that gay people existed and that they could just marry and start a family if they wanted(and I know that that doesn't reflect everyone's experience in the Netherlands). Honestly, if people say: 'I have no problem with gay people, but it's just not for kids', it means they have a problem with gay people. Because if they would really accept gay people and not think being gay is strange or bad, there is no reason at all to keep it from kids.
(side note: strangely enough, sex ed in my memory didn't mention gay people at all. It was all about men and women, STDs and reproduction. It didn't talk about gay sex nor about pleasure or consent. So much for inclusivity I guess)

I basically said 'some people love girls, some people love guys' and she just tilted her head confused. I didn't know how to tell her about homophobia, so I said 'some people don't like girl loving girls and boys loving boys' and she just replied 'that's not very nice'

When my daughter came out to me, my only concern was for her safety and the discrimination she might encounter. You see I am albino, and as such I have endured a huge amount of discrimination and I still have to deal with people walking up to me and saying stupid stuff, like leaning forward and asking, "Are YOU an ALBINO?" Or "You know if you just painted your face such that you look normal I would feel more comfortable" (okay it is stated as "Wow, you would be pretty if you wore makeup especially eye makeup as it would give you color!" Or when I go to the beach I get told, "Girl, you need to get out in the sun more and get yourself some color!" Ummm? What is wrong with that statement? As an albino sun is my enemy. I swell up and break out in hives from the sun. Also... Wait? What? Why is it okay for people to tell me to change the color of my skin? Some people don't see my albinism and just think I am a blond hair blue eyed girl and don't have any understanding of what I go through.
All that said, when my daughter came out I was very fearful that she would experience discrimination even worse than I do or even equal to what I do. As people with albinism in other countries are at risk of being murdered and their body parts sold on the black market for cultural rituals. That to me is a scary thought! I absolutely love and support my daughter being gay and love her wife. I am a huge ally, and I get very angry when people are discriminatory against gays. Well I get very angry when anyone discriminates against any person who is even slightly different. When I was in high school I used to step between bullies and disabled kids and tell the bullies they would have to fight me if they wanted to fight. I never had to fight one of those fights, probably because I was a gym rat with muscles clearly defined and a bit of an anger issue from my life of being bullied and mocked.
I say this because I wonder how many parents might be thinking this way when they struggle with their kids coming out? Maybe not, because most people don't grow up albino.
By the way, I use the term albino here because people understand that, but it really isn't appropriate to use that term to describe us. We have albinism, we are not the totality of the condition an Albino. Just as a cancer patient isn't a cancer, I am not an albino (I can use that term because... well I am one, but don't call someone with albinism and albino. That is just rude. For many of us, who were told from birth we would never amount to anything other than being a freak in a freak show the word albino has a bad connotation.
It’s so terrible that you had to go through such a thing. I hope your daughter is not discriminated against and loves herself and accepts the way she is. You are an amazing parent.
@@luuuuux_ Thank you, my daughter is a very strong force to be reckoned with! She got her first management job at 19 and would be a director in her company by now if the pandemic had not happened. Because of who I am, I was able to teach my kids how to handle bullies. There is a rainbow in every situation, and this one has several rainbows.

I was a part of the LGBT community in high school, even if I wasn't confident about my own sexuality at the time. At no point did anyone try to convert me or pressure me into deciding who I was. I've come out since then over the last couple years, and I'm proud now.

wow I have a lot of thoughts about this. first I want to preface this by saying I identify as a
bi woman... but when I was a child Prop 8 was a huge deal in my christian school. I said a lot of homophobic things because I was parroting what I heard from hateful adults. luckily, while I was repeating all that garbage my grandma asked me “well what if they’re in love?” and that question blew my mind. It humanized this issue for my Barbie Brained kid self who loved love.
I’m so lucky to have my grandma in my life to stop me from heading down that ugly path... but I can’t help wonder what it would be like to have a role model like Jojo when I was a kid.
I’m an artist, and I’ve been sketching out comic ideas on this topic. I think I have a lot more to add on to my story now.
One more thing I remember from JoJo’s coming out timeline was that she posted a video of her dancing to “Born This Way” on TikTok on June 6th, 2020. I remember seeing a lot of people on Gay TikTok suggesting she was a member of the LGBTQ+ community after this. However, because it was during pride month and she didn’t follow up with confirmation at the time, it could be interpreted as a show of allyship rather than a coming out.

I really wish the best for JoJo. I know coming out has its challenges. I am certain becoming a celebrity, especially from a young age, has its challenges. I can only imagine the unique challenges she may face as an openly LGBTQ+ celebrity who is the face of her own brand that is geared towards children. It sounds like she is aware of how fortunate she is to have so many people supportive of her coming out but I hope she knows that hurdles she may face as a result are not her fault and she will be supported even if she chooses not to put a positive spin on things.
Jojo was born at the right time. Early enough that her coming out is momentous, and late enough that she actually can be famous and come out.

I explained lgbtq+ to my children as part of the various 'growing up' talks. I never introduced heterosexuality as something separate from lgbtq+, just another facet of being human. When people bring up other's sexuality, my kids have a very 'why does that even matter?' response, unless the words are hateful, then my children will vigorously defend someone's right to love and happiness. We love and respect others for their minds, not their gender preference.

I was not a fan of jojo siwa as a brand before. She seemed like this perpetually hyper 7 year old and it felt uncomfortable knowing she's growing into an adult. She didn't feel like a person, just a brand. Her coming out story displayed her humanity and growth and really reminded people that she's not just a brand. It sucks that is was definitely a risk for her but so awesome that she feels her own life and happiness is worth it.

Ever since she came out it’s really all I’ve talked about. As someone who is gay myself, having such an influential person be open about their sexuality to inform others and try to end stigma in the lgbt community is fantastic.
I used to not really like her, and for no real reason, either.. but once she came out was when it dawned on me that we are much more similar than I thought and I was treating her differently for absolutely no reason, and that is unfair and wrong; it makes me really sad to think about how I dismissed such a cool genuine person. And at the end of the day I would have loved to grow up with a Jojo Siwa role model, so I’m really happy for all the kids out there who feel validated.
