Star has experience and I feel he has a right. Star attempted to help Charles to grow and become a better person. It is extremely hypocritical to call a 19 year old "a danger to society" when he did the same thing (worse, considering the assault) at 23. At the VERY least, he could've used it as a learning experience and told his fans that Charles should not have made the same mistake that HE did in his own past. Showing no mercy to Charles and acting like he's free from blame and like the past is rewritten just because he's apologized and moved on is hypocritical

I’ve never been a big fan of Jeffree Star or James Charles for the same exact reasons. Both have made racist, transphobic, and predatory comments. They also wear their rudeness and self absorbed ways like a badge of honor, but here’s the thing. This jeffree shit happened a long time ago which I believe he’s apologized for his past behavior and has tried to make up for it since then. The fact that people are using him to EXCUSE James’ behavior is DISGUSTING. Just because jeffree is “worse” doesn’t mean what James did is okay. It doesn’t mean that he can keep doing it. It doesn’t mean that he shouldn’t have been called out. Jeffree was extremely toxic THEN. James is extremely toxic NOW.

This is horrible for both disadvantages students and advantaged students, as the disadvantaged students are much more likely to drop out or bring the entire class down than if they were accepted into a school for their level. At the same time, it pushes out smart people for the fact that they are better off. Forces smart students to get an education from a school that is too easy for them, and they do not reach their full potential. This is incredibly harmful to the nation as a whole.

1.) Is it premeditated? Doesn't seem like it, so it probably won't be first degree homicide. In all likelihood I bet she'll charged with second degree homicide and take a guilty plea for manslaughter. Could shake out differently, just going off of past cases. Just trying to be realistic here.
2.) I feel like we need to move away from retributive justice and more towards rehabilitation. I don't think just locking her up forever will necessarily help even if she "deserves" it. It's a complicated topic but again, just something to think about. Maybe she's not in her right mind and with help she can change for the better. Not saying just give her a slap on the wrist and some counseling, she should still be punished, but as you consider the criminal justice system in general maybe people can change for the better.

Writing such ruthless tweets, coming for James' brother, calling James "danger to society", really? How about you remember about who you was in the past yourself first, before throwing such words on another person?
Even though he changed overtime and acknowledged all the shit he's said before doesn't mean it is not hypocritical to call out James like that now. Collegeboard is a for-profit business, and even if they weren't for profit they still need to cover costs. The people who work for the organization, in whatever capacity, have to put food on the table. The tests forms have to be printed out, in bulk. The questions on the test (which need to change & be updated frequently) need to be researched & developed. The computer systems that manage it all need to be paid for, as do the bills to keep those systems running. There Is No Such Thing As A Free Lunch.
Also, I'm OK with applying for university being a non-trivial investment. Lowering the barriers to entry also lowers expectations on having a quality & rigorous curriculum. 'Getting what you paid for' cuts in multiple ways.

It's like you pick a guy who could have the best teachers available, the best books, the best education and could travel all over the world and evaluate him against another who could barely afford a mediocre book. How can meritocracy work in this eviroment? There must be some kind of leveling between them, otherwise we are not talking about meritocracy, only injustice.

    • @andreas-panay

Pedro Barcelos but the surely the solution is to make sure everyone has similarly good books, teachers, opportunities etc.
It’s unfair some people have better resources, but by college it’s too late. It might not be someone’s fault that they’re not as academically capable, but that doesn’t change the requirements of a course, and it’s also not fair that high achieving students should miss out because they had better support.
effectively discriminating at a later point to try to balance it out just introduces more unfairness-the problem needs to be solved at its roots.
Unfortunately it’s hard to balance the idea of meritocracy with the idea that you should be able to work hard to provide a better start for your child.

    • @papamikeconcurseiro
      @papamikeconcurseiro 5 лет назад +3

@@andreas-panay you're right, everyone should have the same conditions to study and work hard towards their goals but the thing is that in the real world it's not like that. Not only wealthier ppl can have access to better quality of education, they also have access to ppl with the power to let them in to any college they want to go. Phil talked about this topic some months ago, look it up. We don't live in an ideal world, in the real world, meritocracy is just an excuse to keep poor ppl out of the opportunities that could change their lives and also the society's status quo. Rich ppl don't want to see poor ppl living in the same neighboorhood that they live, having lunch at the same restaurants, going to the same parties. This is why they invented this bulshit about meritocracy and ppl eat this bs up like it was a real thing. Wake UP, man!

I gotta say I agree with panay, I didn't grow up rich, never got to travel the world (finally saw parts of europe in college), my parents worked hard and so did I. And I got into a college based on my own hard work and merit. Not because I had the best books, or a private tutor, or anything like that. I just worked really hard. Anyone can get those sweet scores on the tests, through library visits, late nights studying, finding a study friend, there are many options... holding someone who grew up with more money or supplies back to make room for someone with lower skills and scores ia the wrong way to go about "leveling" anything. It's just creating a new inequality to try and compensate for an old one. It's flawed at it's core in my opinion. And remember this is coming from someone who would probably have benefitted, even if only a little, from this system back in highschool/college.

There are ppl who cant, There are cities without public libraries, there are ppl who need to work tirelessly just so they can eat and have a roof, and I'm talking about young ppl who live in those conditions. I'm not saying that I dont believe they can overcome their difficulties, what I'm saying is that it's not fair that they have to do it alone and fight at the same level against ppl who have all The support that there is. You are one in a million and we are talking about public policies that can benefit much more ppl than you. If I was going to base my opinions on my personel life, I would né against those kind of policies because I had to endure and work Hard all my life and didn't have those oportunities but the ones I had were far better than other ppl I have known in my life. The truth is that ppl with more have much easier chance to evolve and the others have not the same opportunities and so, it's way rare to see a guy from the bottom reaching The top. It will never be equal considering people are not equal. Some people are really smart and some are stupid. Now we are going to punish people that are smart... great idea. Instead of making people actually try. Anyone has the internet now and there is no excuse to be stupid unless you have an extra chromosome or something. The funny thing is that you almost never need college anymore. That information is out there. You just have to have the motivation to go and learn it yourself.

shiverme timbers I agree that no one is truly equal in every way to another. @cosimariemer9243 5 лет назад +1

Well, I agree that the Internet gives many people a real opportunity to learn by themselves, but I don‘t think that everyone has the chance to make it - if your parents are not very intelligent, don‘t think a lot about education or are very poor, the chance of you going to college will be smaller. A child that is never supported in its education will have to be extraordinary to succeed anyway - and a small child can‘t possibly comprehend that educating yourself will shape its future. It will do as their parents say - until maybe, when they are old enough to see the importance of learning. But until then, they will have missed years of proper education and if they are poor, they wont have a computer at home... I‘m not saying it‘s impossible, but your background definitely plays a role in your future.

      1) professors don’t care about you, usually also a broad statement. Only few professors do, but most only care about research and there own salaries. Some try to help you learn and some just don’t care. Some use words, that can be a bit insulting nothing more than your bully from high school.
      2) your expected to learn by yourself, without the professors teaching you. I taught myself multiple times before. It’s exhausting, but it’s not impossible. Imagine some throwing a book for chemistry and telling you, you have a exam at the end and this is the only class you have today. That’s about what it feels like. Expect they actually show up for next classes and do nothing. I don’t know how they don’t get fired.
      3) if your off on your own you have to do all the things your parents do for you. It’s just more stupid shit you got to devote your time too, along with debt raising up.
.... don’t forget to have fun. After two years you know if you do it or not. Some people know it after 1st or 2nd semester.

My only question in regards to the Adversity Score is why aren't the kids/testers allowed to see what their ranking/score is? I understand it could be offensive to see that you ranked high (essentially calling your family poor etc) however it seems detrimental to NOT allow them to see it but allow the school systems to see it. I could see the score being very useful to know when writing your entrance essay (either highlighting the struggles you've had to overcome or showcasing your volunteer & charity work if you're privileged etc).Yes, they probably have an idea where they fall but if they're more 'average' than they thought (on the adversity scale), maybe they would focus more on their academic achievements or something.

They are saying, how can you condemn this when you did the same thing. They should be saying, both of you did this wrong shit and it’s wrong. They are literally siding with one guy vs the other. Both sides of this are disgusting IMO. It also doesn’t disprove or delegitimize my claim that it doesn’t matter if you did something wrong in the past. You can still criticize someone else for doing something wrong in the present. Even if it’s the same actions you took part in. A wrong is a wrong period.

In wealthier or more educated situations, parents are more likely to appreciate a better rounded education and impart those values on their children. They also are more likely to seek out or pay for any supplemental help that their children may need beyond what they would normally get in school. They are also able to get their children in better schools, whether that means private schools or just moving to areas with better public schools.

In regards to the Jeffree Star story, after all of this happened with James and Tati, I decided to take an objective look at the beauty influencers in my subscription box (metaphorically, of course, since the sub box has never worked properly :) ). I noticed that there were people who had scandals in the past that I had accepted as being okay, and I noticed a common trend: a lot of the scandals that I deemed bad, but eventually excusable, dealt with racism. My partner is a poc and I am very privileged that they have opened a dialogue in which we can talk about race. The reality of me indirectly or directly supporting people who have been or are hateful towards the people I love, and maybe even my future children, made my decision easy: I mass unsubscribed to MANY beauty influencers, including Jeffree Star. I felt very absolved after making this move. I understand that, to some people, this might seem to be an extreme action, or one of the "problems with cancel culture," and that may be true. But change doesn't happen without extreme action. Funneling money to an alleged racist is not something I am interested in doing, even if it is only "alleged" (even though we have evidence in Jeffree's case of it being fact).

I love the adversity score concept! I'm a sociology student and in my first 100 class in college, we discussed a segment from Oprah years ago about wealthy white kids switching schools with poor black kids for a day, and the privilege really shows. One thing I remember specifically was that the top math student at the poor black school was still leagues behind the smartest kids at the wealthy white school, but other things were access to resources and stuff. I think all education should be the same, but with the way things are, socioeconomic background should absolutely be a factor in college applications. My family is somewhat poor but I was always taught to never act like it, and that's been a privilage i've had. We weren't homeless or starving, but medical stuff was out of the question because we just didn't have it (which is a whole other can of worms here). My point is, case by case bases are very important to me. It's important to see each student individually from their ability to their background and all in between. People who are against the score as a concept are privileged and biased and scared of the future, clinging to the racist past of the United States and the world at large. As far as any problems I have with it, I don't really like how they're hiding it from the students. And finally, I'm not a fan of standardized testing at all, but I know right now there's not gonna be a way to get rid of it until we get Cruella DeVos out of that fucking seat. Much love Phil, love the videos! I hit that like button, I'm waiting on my throat punch 😂

A lot of people don’t understand that standardized test are catered to rich people who can afford tutoring, practice exams, practice books, after school classes from Kaplan...etc. And these things cost a lot of money. I recently took the MCAT(medical school), I had no tutors and had to buy an old used book set. I could only afford 3 practice exams, and I had to work. I’m pretty sure many blew me out of the water. Even these expensive test taking entities like Examcrackers, KAplan, Princeton Review, advertise that you will do better after doing their in class sessions. But they are like 3000 dollars, and not to mention that you can’t work the time your in those classes. So obviously money has a lot to do with standardized test exams. Much of the drawback is from students who are now grown who had mommy and daddy pay for their way in by providing all this help at the expense of their checking account.

You have Twitter? Subtract 50 PP, I feel so sorry for you. Burn it and walk away slowly while you still can.

There's a skill set I've noticed from interacting with other humans that some people just have. It's the ability to project an element of empathy into any conversation. It usually goes hand in hand with someone I call "the vacuum effect" where basically a person who is generally comfortable with who they are as a person and is therefore impervious to other people's view of them, turns into something like a vacuum. Where most people are obsessed with how other people view them, they end up repelling people with this vibe they give off. Vacuums, on the other hand, accidentally just suck people right to them.
    Philip DeFranco is a vacuum.
