I truly do believe that this conveys what we know makes sense as humans. We know we need to move. But, somewhere along the line, we have just missed the point. We do need to get back to basics. I truly believe that this is a great reminder of that way of life - move more, play more and re-think this whole approach to working out. Movement is so important, now this also explains why we find it difficult to do in the modern environment.
We grew up in different countries, different environment but the mom calling you at the end of the day when dinner is ready is an universal thing. It was exactly how you described it for me as well
Daniele Manganaro - it really was a universal call to action for many children a generation or two ago! It is a shame times have changed because our children develop so much based on free, unsupervised play! Thanks for the feedback.
This is amazing! after watching this video over morning coffee & breakfast with my daughter, she's been teaching all of her friends to slow-mo fight and getting me to do it randomly. We slow-mo fight in the check out at the grocery store. Or mini-sessions in the elevator rides we find ourselves in. Now her and all her friends are slow-mo fighting left and right.
Met Darryl at a PLAY conference in Clemson, SC last spring. This man is a fountain of knowledge!! Such a great role model and inspiration! Walks the walk! As soon as you meet him, you want to learn as much as possible from him!! Awesome video with so much truth!
The primal play fitness system is a great way to include natural movement in our life without spending hours a week in the gym. My 3 kids use his animal moves junior deck several times per week and love it.
While I have followed Darryl's Primal Play online and through his book, I recently had the pleasure of meeting him at PaleoF(x) this year and joined him for a workout. He is a truly inspirational person, full of life and passion for health through movement. I am recovering from a back injury that left me unable to walk or stand well. Through healthy eating and movement I have regained my abilities and I am stronger physically and mentally than before my injury. The mindset of "play" makes movement enjoyable and not something you "have" to do but something you "WANT" to do! Think of your childhood and how curious you were and how everything was exciting. Life is going on all around us whether we appreciate it or not, why not have fun with it?
Yes! In person, he addresses so many of the needs folks have in regards to movement. PaleoF(x) would not be as vibrant without him. There's a lot more to a Paleo/Primal/Keto/Ancestral lifestyle than food alone!
@@StrongWomenRule Hi Kay. Yes, I have actually. He speaks and leads workshops at the Ancestral Health Symposiums (and, of course, other places as well). I've attended a number of the symposiums and I believe I saw him first leading a workshop in Berkeley in 2014.
At the recent 2019 Paleo f(x) conference, we had the privilege of spending some quality time getting to know this man, Darryl Edwards. In this talk, Darryl teaches humans young and old to fall in love with movement again. He makes a compelling case for getting back in touch with our roots as an active, social, and playful species wired to explore, connect, and adapt to the environment around us. Highly recommended for a watch!
Darryl Edwards just thought I would watch this again as it is great to watch and draw inspiration from. I now have all your books and have started my new exercise routine with my youngest daughter we are making play fun and I have also changed my diet, please spread the word and the Ted Ex thank you for getting me on the right track.😃
Darryl thank you for delivering this wonderful, passionate talk. I love how you have reframed exercise as play! You've given me permission to do the things I enjoyed in my youth such as skipping, hula hooping, playing tag etc. Exercise was an absolute chore for me BUT play was always a joy! So thanks to you I can bring on the JOY!
"We should focus less on working out, and more on playing out!" What a great mantra - that is what I am taking from this fabulous talk Darryl/ Thank you.
Brilliant presentation Darryl! Stats are truly disturbing, especially about children getting injured more frequently because of falling from a bed rather than falling out of a tree, and being less physically active than prison inmates. Love how you invited the audience to join you on the stage and in their seats to play. Very practical and inspiring! Thank you for sharing your wisdom and this very important message with the world. You certainly are making a world a better place! 🙏
As a former elementary school teacher and high school coach, and now health coach with a heart especially for children, I can't agree more with Darryl's philosophy. It's time to release ourselves and our kids from EXERCISE and rediscover intuitive, fun, natural human movement. Great stuff!
I've listened to this twice, first just to listen and the second to take notes!! I love this refreshing look at how we approach exercise. For me in my clinical practice, I see people come up with many excuses as to why they can't exercise and since listening to this talk and seeing Daryl talk live (vey inspiring!!!) I've changed my approach. I've started encouraging patients to make movement part of the their day to day to life and most importantly make it fun!!!!! Thanks Daryl.
What type of clinician are you? It's great to hear that patients are being recommended movement in a way that can actually make a difference to their lives through joy!

We live in a weight obsessed society. So great that you focused on health and wellbeing and not about the body beautiful! Movement is for health and it's great you highlight this in your talk. Physical inactivity is an increasing problem but you certainly discuss solutions that matter, bravo!!!!
Fantastic talk. Darryl talks with such sense and authenticity. A real free thinker in the field of movement. His book primal play is a must read if you like this talk.
TED talks never disappoint, and this is no exception. So many great points made here. I personally hate the concept of “working out” myself and I’d much rather be enjoying my time where the byproduct is better fitness. I’ll never forget the first time I actually joined in on a Primal Play session. I may have blanked on the idea for a while, but that time in the yard of a church in Los Ángeles made me a believer. I hope this message reaches everyone. Maybe someday we’ll see parks where the adults routinely play pick up games of tag. I can imagine that world, and it’s a much better place. Thank you Darryl for being such an inspiration, and sharing your wisdom with the world ❤️
This talk had me in tears twice and laughter. Play is contagious even through the video screen. This is very eye opening and inspired me to notch up the time I am spending with my son outside no matter what the weather is and creative movement inside.
Great TED talk. Entertaining, funny and informative. I'm the guy who joins the gym every January and never goes again after February. Still paying for my membership anyway, promising myself I'll go again tomorrow. But things are looking different now. I used to take the elevator all the time, recently I decided to switch to the stairs. I'm active commuting now and just integrating movement throughout my day whenever I can, no gym required!
I love the mini tag game and the slow mo fighting game. I remember playing the slow Mo game with my older brothers as a child. What an infectious way to get people moving again. Let's all play out and forget work out! Thank you / diolch Eleri
This is one of those TED talks that just makes you stop and think "woah..." What an amazing guy who is doing some really amazing work. Made me realize that my current career path (Engineer) is not what I want to do, I want to MOVE!
Thanks so much for the feedback! As a former software engineer who now follows his area of passion. I sincerely wish you all the best in the pursuit of movement!
Darryl Edwards GETS IT!! If ever there was a more simple yet PROFOUND call to action for ourselves (and more importantly our children) I have not heard it! We need more people like Darryl getting this message out to our communities! Thank you, Darryl! Keep spreading this message!!
I’m so glad I stumbled across this video. I’ve been saying this for the longest time. The mental battle is sooooooo freakin' hard I'm gonna try and play more every day!!
Love this message. This should go viral! Change your mindset, thinking, language and action about movement! Go Darryl, play out spreading this important message all over!
Wow, what a fun and informative video! This totally makes sense. And getting more movement every day is way easier than "exercising" 3 times a week. I tend to fall off the exercise band wagon far too easily but can certainly give this a try!
This was an incredible talk! Additionally, the information of exercise and its benefits of health is widely undervalued. Thank you for bringing attention to this space!
Amazing and what an eyeopener. For me as a mom of two active boys is this animal movements movement so inspirational a doable too ☺️ there is not a day we dont practise your excercises. Everytime I am with them on the kids playground, park etc your quote comes to my mind and I smile, while I say to myself “world is your gym, better yet your playground” x
Great and inspiring talk from Darryl I’ve shared this talk with all of my clients and they’ve all said how great it is. Children need to play more lets make sure that we all give them the message 👍🏻👏🙏🏻
I feel like this is huge! This realisation of movement as medicine, of play as a way to make it work! If you think about it, you often don't have control over your environment, but you do have control and the ability to choose how you act in those environments. So it makes sense to learn how to fall in love with movement so you can do it anywhere. Previously I would avoid going to the gym or avoid physical activity. But the reality is I cannot always do this and avoiding physical activity is not good for me. It also teaches a behaviour of sedentary living which feels good in the short term but is awful longer term! Physical inactivity is one of the world's biggest killers but it doesn't get enough attention. Nutrition and diet is the flavour of the month but exercise does wonders for us. Rather than avoid physical activity, learn how to make it fun. Darryl Edwards what a genius! You are onto something.
Such an inspiring talk! A simple solution to a terrible & growing problem from a brilliant mind... I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Darryl & taking his Animal Moves class - it was 60min of the most fun I’ve ever had in a ‘workout class’ & it was tough & challenging! Gyms are not like this! Thanks Darryl for bringing your vision of Primal Play to the world - let’s spread the word! Buy the book & sign up, you won’t regret it!
Such an inspiring TEDtalk, thank you Darryl, it resonated so well with our Primal Moves community. The ‘Primal Movement’ is growing! Now to accelerate it! It also bought back a lot of memories, I loved building dens, climbing trees, wading thru streams AND making sure I was home for tea so not to get ‘a clip round the ear’! We lived on the outskirts of Chelmsford in Essex so the countryside started literally 200 metres from our house, looking back, me and my sisters were so lucky in this regard. Fast forward 40 years and here I am with a primal movement gym in Melbourne surrounded by 6 other conventional gyms. Love love love it!
Darryl's passion for movement, and more importantly play, is infectious! Loved the interaction with the audience bringing them on stage for a "primal play" game. Inspiring talk and message!
Darryl is an inspiration! He has made working out fun and exciting. Share this link with friends and family because we really do need to get the word out there that exercise does not need to be a slog but rather fun, playful and relaxing!
As an OT I couldn't agree more Darryl Fantastic talk, so well informed and insightful, I wish everyone would watch it. Thank you as I can use it as a tool with my patients in recovery...and I will recommend it to my colleagues too! Keep going
Super talk Darryl. Loved the unexpected twist about your first client. Your work is so wonderful. Well done for following your passion. And for living it. Look at how much fun those kids were having. So natural. Am sure the moving energy from the audience was a great boost too.
This is my second time watching and it reminds me of the time I've spent with you at Paleo f(x) and the Ancestral Health Symposium. I have never had so much fun exercising. Your Animal Moves definitely works muscles that get overlooked in the gym because they're whole body movements. I absolutely love what you do and the energy you bring to it. Wishing you the best health and success in 2020!
This is just superb! Given we are now on lockdown and dealing with covid-19 there is probably more sedentary living than ever before! We need more and more ideas to get people moving.
Such an incredible talk, thought provoking! This message needs to be heard by all, especially at a time when we, as a society, seem to be getting sicker rather than healthier. Thank you for sharing this important message. 🙏🏽
What a great talk, making exercise accessible for the masses again and showing us where we've lost our way! My son enjoyed it too, especially the bear claw! Sophie
Darryl, you make an AMAZING case for the value of play and movement, as opposed to working out. Thanks for reminding us that we were designed to move and play! That's where the joy can be found.
Love this talk so much! It made such sense and was a real relief to hear that humans are actually hardwired to conserve energy and that we aren’t lazy just cos we don’t want to spend hours down the gym!!! As a reformed gym junkie I was tickled pink by some of Darryl’s fun ways to PLAY. Love your work.
Helen Marshall - yes people have a love/hate relationship with the gym and some it becomes a hate/hate. This talk explains why and what we can do about it. Thanks so much for the feedback!!!
This message is needed more than ever! Movement is medicine and certainly useful now given the COVID crisis for mental and physical health. Thanks for such a powerful message, Darryl!!!!
Inspirational talk. Have met the speaker on a number of occasions and I have to say he is the real deal. Practises everything that he preaches and is a fountain of knowledge.
This should be a must view for parents, teachers and policymakers! A superb talk and one of the best TEDx talks I've seen - love the interactive elements!!
So inspiring! After watching your TEDx I felt guilty that I DO drive short distances.... so immediately after watching my son and I went for our "movement snack" and walked into the village to get some supplies and collect my daughter from her dance class. Surprisingly easy to rack up 10k on the fitbit, my son was happy and we had a great chat looking at the blossom on trees in the rain. We are now going to institute walking 25 minutes to school in the mornings. Thank you.
Zoe Bateman - thank you so much for sharing. I’m inspired by your desire to move more with your kids using “movement snacks” and walking to school too. Love this!
Darryl never fails to inspire and educate me. I'm so glad you had this opportunity Darryl to share your knowledge. You absolutely smashed it. Keep on inspiring us all and I will continue to aspire to help as many people as you do!
Yes! Yes! Yes! Simple changes can make great differences. We’ve tried to make life easier but it’s making it harder in so many other ways. Well put Darryl!!
It's not easy for some of us to invest in our health. Exercise is one of the best investments available. I struggled for years to try to do a regular program and I would love to say it's easy now. But it isn't. I have to really put in the effort. One thing I do agree with is that having fun really helps. Why be bored with exercise? Enjoy yourself instead. I really love this message. Just do it and move more whatever your age!
Love this talk Darryl! Your presentations never disappoint - always composed with the utmost care and delivered with intelligence and energy. It's wonderful to see this kind of attention brought to the value of play, and to see someone focus on bringing an element of play to movement (I think sometimes we forget how good it actually feels to move). And play isn't just for kids, it's for adults too!
Darryl this is such a powerful talk, thank you. Spreading the message about the importance of moving our body for our health is so key, but showing us how much fun you can have doing it is just amazing! Here’s to lots more fun in the pursuit of health!
Everybody needs to watch this. Darryl's message is health-transforming and life-changing. His passion for movement is simply infectious - this is a must-see, no matter what your age.
Fantastic Darryl - such a positive approach to getting people to move. Sitting is the new smoking and so many people are struggle to move. Something to think about for sure!
Thanks Aurelija, yes sitting is known as the new smoking and it is a habit which is all the more pervasive! Sedentary time is as much as a concern as physical inactivity which is an important distinction.
Darryl Edwards absolutely brilliant man, landmark TED talk that will stay relevant for a long time. It’s so refreshing to here a credible solution to a modern problem, rather than more problem-admiration . 🙌🏽
Mohanpal - thank you! This point made my day. I wanted to present the problem but certainly what to make us feel empowered about simple, practical and useful solutions. Thanks again!!! 🤼♀️
I absolutely love this! Today, I was playing with my children (and dog) at the park, swapping between basketball with the older one and running around the playground with my toddler n dog. I couldn't help but observe and wonder, this little girl being pushed on the swing (for a long while) by her dad who had a full headphone set on and his face buried in the screen of his phone. No laughter, no interactions, just silent swinging. No judgement, just sad to see that as a reality in our society these days.
One of the best TED videos I've seen in a while! Laying out the problem and discussing practical solutions. Doesn't make it simple, but the vision is clear. This is a great concept that I've always tried to put into words, but I couldn't quite do it. He did a great job of making sense of this physical inactivity epidemic that we are currently facing. The discussion at the end on how humans ideally should be moving together as the social beings we are was powerful. I will certainly be working on moving backwards to move forwards as you suggest!
Thanks to everyone for the support!!! A million views!!!! Thanks to all those who shared, commented and liked!!! 🙏🏿

Kimberly Mahurin - play is contagious! What a great point. ❤️
Kimberly Mahurin - play certainly is contagious it’s part of our nature and is something we need to focus on far more often.
I know exactly what you mean! I’ve been there and I think many reading this can relate! Thanks for sharing your story.
That's great you are changing your habits!
@@lmontrice2985 - yes and still doing so too!
@@mrg7063 - so great to hear!
I love the mini tag game and the slow mo fighting game. I remember playing the slow Mo game with my older brothers as a child. What an infectious way to get people moving again. Let's all play out and forget work out!
Thank you / diolch
Eleri
Thank you for trying those games out again! Certainly worthwhile playing out more often for sure. 😊
Love the tag game too so reminiscent of childhood! Wonderful.
DO IT!
You have awakened in me the desire to finally start running.
Darryl Edwards GETS IT!! If ever there was a more simple yet PROFOUND call to action for ourselves (and more importantly our children) I have not heard it! We need more people like Darryl getting this message out to our communities!
Thank you, Darryl! Keep spreading this message!!
Peter Spiegel - we certainly do need more people getting this message out there. Thank you!
Yes keep spreading it!
Darryl Edwards' passion for educating and inspiring us that Movement IS Medicine takes us to another level of understanding that we were born to move!
Izabella Natrins - thank you for the feedback and support!! Movement is medicine!!
I’m so glad I stumbled across this video. I’ve been saying this for the longest time. The mental battle is sooooooo freakin' hard I'm gonna try and play more every day!!
Izabella Natrins - born to move for sure!!
Love this message. This should go viral! Change your mindset, thinking, language and action about movement! Go Darryl, play out spreading this important message all over!
Katalin N Kokavecz - thank you! Yes we should all spend more time playing out! 🤼♀️
Wow, what a fun and informative video! This totally makes sense. And getting more movement every day is way easier than "exercising" 3 times a week. I tend to fall off the exercise band wagon far too easily but can certainly give this a try!
Many people do fall off the exercise band wagon, more movement and more fun is one way to get there!
@@darrylfedwards - totally agreed Darryl!
You smashed it! A great discussion as to why exercise isn’t quite working out. Funny too!
Mark Woolf - thank you!
Darryl smashed it for sure!
Sarah Harding - thank you! 😊
This was an incredible talk! Additionally, the information of exercise and its benefits of health is widely undervalued. Thank you for bringing attention to this space!
Thank you so much for the feedback. I agree the benefits of exercise are widely undervalued for sure!
Yes, I agree exercise for health is undervalued for sure! Great there are people like Darryl making a difference.
Thank you - really pleased to hear this resonated with you!
London Maminka - keep going!!
Great and inspiring talk from Darryl I’ve shared this talk with all of my clients and they’ve all said how great it is. Children need to play more lets make sure that we all give them the message 👍🏻👏🙏🏻
Yes, children do need to be given the option to play more than they currently do. There has been a steady decline for decades.
Children certainly need to be playing more just like many of us did as kids. That was my childhood for sure!!!
@@mrg7063 - mine too!!!

This definitely needs to go viral!
Darryl, This Ted Talk changed my life. I started exercising regularly on January 31, 2020 until today. :) Thank you!
Thanks so much for sharing that it really helps to know this talk made a difference!
Yes, I was persistent ...
@@marijapanic5329 - great to hear!
This really is superb!
MissP P - an amazing talk!
Thank you so much for taking part MissP P and for spreading the word!
That's amazing! Love that Primal Movement is spreading.
@@StrongWomenRule it’s great mate! The best way to move eh? 🙌🏻❤️
Adopting a more PlayfuLife just makes so much sense!!!!! Thanks Darryl for you passion and clarity.
Thank you so much! Really appreciated especially during these times.
Darryl's passion for movement, and more importantly play, is infectious! Loved the interaction with the audience bringing them on stage for a "primal play" game. Inspiring talk and message!
Love that interaction at the end. So fun!!
@@lovedowntempo - yes so much fun for sure!
Loved that "primal play" game!
Brian VanDongen - you know that was my favourite part of the talk getting some play in at the end! 😊
Thank you Brian!
What an inspirational and fun talk with all the great sense of humour. Also the linking with the history is amazing! Congratulations Darry!
Thanks so much for the feedback. Pleased you loved the historical aspects too.
That was a fascinating connection to history!
Darryl is an inspiration! He has made working out fun and exciting. Share this link with friends and family because we really do need to get the word out there that exercise does not need to be a slog but rather fun, playful and relaxing!
Donna Crous - thank you so much for the feedback and thanks for sharing!
We really do need to get this work and word out there!
Amazing.... had me glued to my phone! Such helpful facts and has inspired me to workout more than ever!

Thank you for the feedback, it really helps!

Mihaela Furnea - thank you so much for the feedback and support. Thanks for sharing. 🙏🏿
Super talk Darryl. Loved the unexpected twist about your first client. Your work is so wonderful. Well done for following your passion. And for living it. Look at how much fun those kids were having. So natural. Am sure the moving energy from the audience was a great boost too.
Thanks so much for watching and the great feedback!
That twist was superb! Loved that.
Need more interactive talks like these! Very inspiring and motivational👍🏽
Julian Reid - totally agreed!
Glad to hear this inspired and motivated you! Thank you.
Thank you!
Thanks so much for watching again and for the amazing feedback! Much appreciated.
Best wishes for 2020 and I hope to meet you again at some point!

Such a delight to watch on several occasions! that slow-motion fighting, just genius!

Great to watch and learn from, we forget how important exercise and normal things help us exercise great Tedex and funny too.
Shanny Boo - thank you! Always good to have fun and especially needed for exercise!
Thank you!

This is just superb! Given we are now on lockdown and dealing with covid-19 there is probably more sedentary living than ever before! We need more and more ideas to get people moving.

I hate the gym too! Great to cater to non-gym goers.
Your niece is completely right, our trainer entertains us and we don't give up.
Such an incredible talk, thought provoking! This message needs to be heard by all, especially at a time when we, as a society, seem to be getting sicker rather than healthier. Thank you for sharing this important message. 🙏🏽

Lots of work to be done given the health state of the nation!
@@FitnessExplorer - do you think times will change for the better?
Mark Jackson - it will take a lot of political will and cultural shifts to make it happen. It’s not just about individual willpower.
What a great talk, making exercise accessible for the masses again and showing us where we've lost our way! My son enjoyed it too, especially the bear claw! Sophie
So pleased your son enjoyed the Bear Crawl. We have to make exercise appealing to the masses for sure!!
Love this!!!! :-)
The approach that it needs to be fun is so obvious and revolutionary. Darryl is amazing at encouraging everyone to be a better version of themselves
Darryl, you make an AMAZING case for the value of play and movement, as opposed to working out. Thanks for reminding us that we were designed to move and play! That's where the joy can be found.
Wise Traditions - we are designed to move and play. Thank you for your comments on this talk.
What a reminder! A great talk on play and movement.
So much joy can be found in movement and play, thanks for sharing!
That's a great point about energy conservation!
This message is needed more than ever! Movement is medicine and certainly useful now given the COVID crisis for mental and physical health. Thanks for such a powerful message, Darryl!!!!
You're welcome!

Inspirational talk. Have met the speaker on a number of occasions and I have to say he is the real deal. Practises everything that he preaches and is a fountain of knowledge.

Mark Woolf - thank you so much!
Very powerful message!!
Thank you!
Love this!

Yes! Yes! Yes! Simple changes can make great differences. We’ve tried to make life easier but it’s making it harder in so many other ways. Well put Darryl!!
Cat Proudfoot - yes convenience has become a problem when it comes to our health. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing your story. Having fun does help for sure!
Tiffany Turner - thank you so much for your thoughtful response! We do often forget how good it feels to move, thanks for sharing!
A superb presentation!
Darryl this is such a powerful talk, thank you. Spreading the message about the importance of moving our body for our health is so key, but showing us how much fun you can have doing it is just amazing! Here’s to lots more fun in the pursuit of health!
Doctor Christie - thank you! Fun is a significant factor in making “exercise” sustainable for many!
So important this message of movement for health. Great to see doctors endorsing this message!
So important to have fun with movement!!!

Thank you so much for the feedback!
So wonderful to see!
There certainly isn't enough emphasis on fun and joy with the fitness industry, really enjoy your perspective Darryl!
Excellent talk, how on earth is the auditorium not packed for this man???
Blanca Cassin - it was actually a full house! 🥳

Play makes movement far more interesting for sure!
Now, more than ever...this is SO important! Saw Darryl live and this is such a brilliantly useful talk for real health.
That you Sara for the feedback! We certainly need this more than ever before!!
Just absolutely love this! I love the point about humans being hard-wired to hate exercise so true for many!
FitterStronger - thank you!
Those words he says are resounding.
This really is a credible solution to the modern problem of physical inactivity!
L Montrice - thank you!
Thank you!
Totally agree Mo
I absolutely love this! Today, I was playing with my children (and dog) at the park, swapping between basketball with the older one and running around the playground with my toddler n dog. I couldn't help but observe and wonder, this little girl being pushed on the swing (for a long while) by her dad who had a full headphone set on and his face buried in the screen of his phone. No laughter, no interactions, just silent swinging. No judgement, just sad to see that as a reality in our society these days.
Now that really is a shame!
Thank you for your kind words! Really appreciated!!
Brilliant talk and thought provoking points. Definitely one for everyone to listen to! Thanks
Sarah Garton - thank you!
I loved it!
Darryl is a good person and he shares his ideas well.
