I came here because I have some chard that over-wintered (and survived here in Ohio) that has now gone to seed...the funny thing is, they have grown to about 7 feet tall!!! I never would have guessed they'd get that big. It's all still green, so as you say, I'll show some patience =) Thanks for all the instruction!

That’s how it should be … it definitely should take the second season for them to flower and go to seed.
Mine are about 7 feet tall also!
Needs us to have lots of patience 😅

My local NorCal library started a seed exchange and one of the chard starts I planted last fall has gone to seed! Perfect video. Thank you! I just need to wait a bit for it to dry out and brown, but I got the envelopes to return them in. How exciting to help my community become more self sufficient as we potentially are heading into very hard times with insane massive support for Ukraine's fight with Russia! I'll save a few of the gazillions from just this one plant to feed to my new flock of chickens just nearing their first lay! They love them.

Chard is a biennial plant, meaning it has a two year life cycle, but it is cultivated as an annual in the vegetable garden and harvested in its first season of growth. Once it begins to flower and set seed in its second year, its leaves turn bitter and unpalatable. Both the leaves and stalks of chard are edible.

I've got last year's chard just starting to go to seed all over my garden, and I'm going to be saving the red, the green, and the gorgeous pink in my front yard (I don't even eat that one, I've been treating it like an ornamental!). It's just such a great plant. I'm in New Zealand, we're in spring now, we have mild winters where we are, and it's a real winter staple here because it just keeps producing. I reckon it's setting seed now because it's not happy about the weather warming up ;)
The seed does take a good long time to mature, from my experience in recent years. You've just got to get over the fact it's going to be falling all over everything for a while. I've decided to stake mine this year, keep it up and out of the way so I can still use my paths. I lost a path completely to it last summer!
(please exempt me from the giveaway, I think I'll have plenty of seed!)

I let some rainbow chard plants go to seeds. I collected a lot and then pulled up the old plants and dragged them over to our green (plant recycle) trash can. Now we have about 20 chard plants growing all around the yard. They are drought tolerant! So I harvest the leaves and then we pull up the plant. I made a chard/potato/parmesan cheese soup that was delicious with 10 huge chard leaves (more than a foot long and also very wide.) I learned about the seeds from MIgardener.

But to my surprise right in the middle of my carrots is the big red veined green leaf. I have NEVER grown Swiss Chard before but there it was! I just left it cuz I wasn't sure if it really was swiss chard. This year it came back so I put it in a pot and of course it started to bolt..I knew that I had to save the seeds with such a hardy plant! Thanks for this video, I can't wait till they turn brown!

I’ve grown Swiss chard for many years. This is the first year (2023) all of it finally after a 2022 season went to seed. I had so much Swiss chard. Then it grew to be a monster giant! Huge, thick stalks 8-10 feet tall! They have all dropped over and are blocking the walkway…but I am enjoying this new adventure. The smell is INCREDIBLE! No wonder the bees love them. They smell like Vanilla and honey. But no where near brown, and I’m wondering how much longer I have to wait? Probably until the end of summer or fall! I’ll be patient! Thanks for giving me the push to keep going!

Same. I am in Australia so we are at the start of our summer. One of the silverbeet seedlings planted in May grew to be my most successful, stalk and leaves longer than my arms, then went to seed with a stalk about 1.5+ metres? It’s flopped out of a raised bed, blocking a path, still green. This was such a great plant that I want it’s seeds, so seems patience is the key until they actually turn brown!

    This answers my question. Thanks!
NE Illinois here. Last November, I still had 4 Swiss chard plants still alive so I transferred them to large pots and put them in the basement to over winter. I continued harvesting leaves on occasion.
3 of the 4 died in February. Late March, I moved the last one back to the garden and was able to get leave thru June. Then it flowered and went to seed.
Now to be patient to want for it to die off. Plant is 4 foot tall and very top heavy. Hoping the stakes will keep it from toppling before I can get the seeds.

Sorry folks, but this is not good advice. Swiss chard is a Biennial. The flowering and setting of seed in chard is triggered by a period of vernalization. A chard plant set out early in the spring may go through a period of cold nights and "think" that it has experienced a winter. This may cause some of your chard plants to set flowers and seed. This is not a characteristic that you want to encourage in a chard plant. The ability of the plant to go through its first season without bolting to seed is a desirable characteristic for swiss chard. If you save seed from plants that bolt to seed in their first year you are selecting for that trait. Future generations will be more likely to bolt. Also, in this video it appears that only one plant has bolted and he is claiming you can save seed from that plant. If you save seed from only one plant it is likely that very little or none of that seed will be viable. If the seed is viable it will make weak plants. This is due to inbreeding depression. Chard is an outbreeding plant and should have a population of 20-50 plants to maintain a strong healthy line. Some plants such as peas can produce viable seed when you save seed from only one plant. But that is not the case for many other plants, including chard. Seed saving is a great endeavor but the devil is in the details.

I planted beets for the first time last year … none of them went to seed.
I left three of them in the ground over the winter … they bolted and went to flower this spring. I am waiting for the flower/ seed cycle to complete so that I can harvest those seeds … so, I guess it takes a long time to collect seeds from Swiss chard, and patience must be a requirement 😅

I have chard from Winter that I let get HUGE and bolt. Unfortunately, I pulled most of them before the seeds had turned from green to brown, stacked them up out of the way.
      Was not smart.
I am now saving those millions of seeds. They are tiny compared to those turning still in-ground.
Are those others viable that I pulled too early?

Hahaha I fully intend to buy my own seeds-- I'm not waiting for free seeds. I just thought it would be fun to try some of these, too. I'm definitely not desperate ;-)

garanandmelissa i'm sorry, I did not mean to call you desperate at all. I was just making a general statement about most of the comments that I have seen. I hope no offense was taken.

Hi Luke. When you were talking about saving chard seeds, it occurred to me that I stop watering mine because we have such a water shortage here in California. The plants then bolt. Might be the lack of water causes them to go to seed.

Also, do you package and sell all your own seeds. I bought some of your kale seeds and they're doing great, except for the icky green worms I pick off.

Are all of those balls of seeds... one seed each per ball? Or are they clusters of many seeds in each ball you need to break apart?

Thanks. Mine went to seed a month ago but they are still green. Can I cut them and dry them to speed up the process. I can’t find anything online about this. I’m worried they are not mature enough yet.

You will laugh but I have never ever tried Swiss chard before! Getting free seeds will give me great incentives to plant and eat it. Pick me pick me! 🤓

Is swiss chard self fertile? I have one plant that overwintered and it is flowering, I don't want to have to keep watering it if it isn't going to produce seed.

I think I cut the seeds off too early, they aren’t brown yet. Will they still ripen inside a brown bag ok?

Hello there. I live in Texas and I had a problem with my Swiss chard. I directly sowed them outside, they germinated but got very leggy. I am not sure why. Any tips?

Swish chard goes to seed to easily here in the UK and the same with spinach, it can be a pain in the neck, but what can you do?
