Bjj was originally evolved to no time limit no holds fighting tournaments. The point is to minimizing damage and the energy you waste. While wrestling is such a beast that you can't touch the person while he is dominating you.
Jiu-jitsu is not safe, especially not for someone without much muscle on their frame. Joint injuries are EXTREMELY common in BJJ, and you're much more vulnerable to them if you're not carrying significant muscle. And that's purely accounting for accidents, and not malice or gross negligence from others, which is also somewhat common in BJJ. I've personally been hurt by ithers in both shoulders, both knees, both feet, one elbow and my trachea practicing BJJ. Anyone getting into it needs to know the risks involved.
@@leonardomarquesbellini that’s true based on what I’ve heard, but I wasn’t referring to the training, I just think grappling is more likely to get you out of a fight with minimal fight related injuries, rather than standing and trading blows with someone👍🏻
"I've tried to end fights with livershots many many times. It's not so easy when the other guy doesn't want one." *briefly pauses* Love your videos Ramsey, you're a really cool guy.
Speaking as some one who has trained in a striking art, has virtually no training in grappling, has had friend killed by a punch to the back of the head, and who has personally been choked out in a street fight and walked away unharmed except for my pride, I 100% agree with what you said here. Never punch someone in the head unless you're ok with the possibility of them dying, or even shove them. Concrete's HARD stuff.
I don't disagree with you. Now if someone gestures to you that they want to hurt you, throwing the first punch in their head is perfectly fine. You are not obligated to give up your element of surprise, which is crucial for self-defense and the best surprise is a punch they don't see coming. If you offensively grapple them, they might pull out a weapon, they get time to think and might bite, fish hook, groin grab etc. while you are semi-stationary and both of your arms are occupied. In doing so you waste the element of surprise and expose your vital spots. In my country you can get a fine for involuntary manslaughter; you won't go to prison for it in case you are convicted and I would not take my chances and try to discourage someone gently if they showed serious violent intent. But of course you don't have to punch someone in the head. Even a child can kick a man hard enough between the legs to escape but a child cannot muscle a man to the ground and pull off an arm bar unless the man is getting a paycheck and is pretending for a movie shoot. So basically striking can save children but grappling cannot because it requires a lot of muscle or crazy amounts of experience and it also puts your vital spots in a precarious position. I also think that kicking someone in the junk is more gentle than choking someone; when you choke someone out you make them fear for their life and when they pass out they have no autonomous way of expressing their intent and are helpless in both mind and body and could be molested while they are unconscious. This is why I think choking is a violation similar to rape and not a funny party trick to be taken lightly even if it does not do permanent damage in many cases. Depending on the person's appraisal it can scar them for life.
@@miesvaillanykyisyytta3252 Oh, for sure, do what you gotta do to stay alive. I'm just saying the consequences can escalate so quickly and lives can be taken unintentionally, regardless of legality, and often over very inconsequential disagreements. In my case, I was young and stupid and being egged on by my peers to mess with someone I had no business messing with. Fortunately he was a wrestler who took mercy on me.
My advice is avoid street fights as much as possible. People think they can just sucker punch someone and run away. I had a friend who got shot in the back and died doing that And the multiple aggressors thing. One of the few street fights I’ve been in a big guy came up out of nowhere and sucker punched my friend, he fell and hit his head on the concrete and ended up in the hospital, but then the other 3 of us got the guy to the ground and kicked and stomped him until he was out. So I’d never try fighting a group of people regardless of size or strength. Just my experience with things. Thanks coach.
its definitely hard to stay in shape while studying engineering (especially after it gave me an energy drink addiction lol), however i still make it out to training whenever i possibly can, at least 3 hours a week. still at a point where the warmups and sparring are a pretty good workout for me. great video as always
Of course, not everybody can spend 1 or 2 hour of exercice every day. People have other obligations like study, work or family. When I was in university, studing maths, another guy also was going to the gym all the days. And that guy takes 6 years instead of 4 in order to finish the studies, because it's very hard to do regular exercice while studing.
During lockdown I was doing 15 min workouts at home. In 15~20 min you can do 10 sets of push-ups or squats and get a nice strength gain (and appearance).
No problem, do a set of squats or pushups every hour. Train for 5 minutes after each hour, you'll reset your brain and get an hour of practice every day without any drawbacks (except being stinky from sweat). Trust me, those hours stack over months and years)
I had a roommate in college who majored in engineering. He was a barbell chested beast that warned up with 300 lbs on a bench press and worked up to 500 lbs for reps. He was the first guy to ever invite to go lift with him back when I was a scrawny weakling who couldn’t even lift an empty bar. That guy was super cool and inspired me to get strong. That’s what I think of every time someone tells me they study engineering.
Part of this seems to have an element of a different problem, where people don't take into account training, workouts, exercises or practice, and believe that they either have to find a way to do something RIGHT NOW or else they simply can't. I've fallen into this trap many times (and still do) so the reminder that it takes time and effort to be capable is always good and welcome. Thank you for everything as usual, time for me to go out there and train.
With all the questions you get about this Ramsey I have been grossly underestimating the number of people out there street fightin’. I better get out there and train!

I actually did batman duty for Greater Los Angeles from 2013-2018. Defeated lots of bad guys. Broke countless bones, some of them mine. But this is what my city needed at the time.
Thing about 'testicular destruction': It is actually less dangerous for a person to get kicked in the nuts than any vital organ like the liver, kidneys or solarplexus that would be powerful enough to incapacitate them. The nads really hurt, and yes, I've been kicked in the nads quite a bit. Before we had computers to play with, that's what we did as kids. You will not likely lose your ability to reproduce (I sure didn't) from gettung kicked in the nuts. Unless you're on PCP or in a state of mind where you could fight on with multiple bullet wounds, the pain in your nads from a good kick will strongly discourage you from doing anything than lying on the ground. The Liver, Kidneys and Spleen are somewhat pain sensitive, but there have been cases where there was severe internal bleeding in these organs from getting a beating
And that's gonna be pretty tough to accomplish, if your a wimp then your more likely going to have to really hurt them in order to win, you definitely aren't likely to just walk up and bully them around lol
I'm a "wimp" in the sense that I'm out of shape, but I know how to injure others. I don't know how to win a fight while being a "wimp" without injuring the person (or avoiding the fight altogether). Actually, I do, but it is rather difficult to do, especially if the opponent is at all aggressive or knowledgeable. Another commenter was saying 'brains over muscles' which is what I was thinking about, but unless you can talk your way out of it or have a plan ahead of time, brains aren't going to get you out of injury (either to yourself or your opponent) in a fight when one side of the fight is clearly stronger than the other. When both sides are equal in strength and general ability, injury obviously can still occur due to getting tired or simple mistakes in defense but that can happen in any fight, at least when strength/ability are equal both sides will eventually get in a stalemate and this might discourage people from continuing any fighting. But, then, generally a wimp should be discouraged from fighting someone who is buff in the first place, so I'm wondering how we got into this situation to begin with.
Hi Ramsey, love your insights and the way you often go off on insightful tangents 😁 I have a question... I have been training in Muay Thai and Dutch Kickboxing for most of my adult life and would love to compete in an amateur fight when that becomes available again post-pandemic. In fact, it has been one of my dreams to have at least 1 amateur fight in my lifetime, whether or not I win or lose. My trainers have also said that I'm ready to compete. However, I have a medical issue that I haven't told them about, which has so far prevented me from competing due to the risks involved: I am on anticoagulants due to a medical condition and because of this, doctors have said that I should not engage in any activity which involves hard knocks, especially to the head, as my chances of having intercranial bleeding is much higher than "normal" people. My tactic during sparring has always been to avoid getting hit in my head as much as possible... Which is of course difficult, and I have been caught many times with some hard shots (but haven't had any adverse effects so far after several years.) But I realise that in the ring my opponent may hit me with quadruple the amount of power of my sparring partners. And this is what scares me (and my wife). Especially as we have 2 young kids now. What advice would you give to someone in this situation? Should I give up on one of my life dreams or take the risk and hope that my opponent doesn't turn me into a vegetable..? What would you do? Thanks in advance for your enlightenment. - Dan.
Go find a worthy opponent but come to an agreement before hand that it should be done wearing head gear. Then just go at it bro. I support your dream goodluck
How does a wimp win a fight without hurting anyone? Simple answer is: He doesn't. But the wimp would be surprised at how quickly the fight goes out of most people, once they've been jabbed directly to the nose. Quick dose of reality, right there.
I was thinking of learning grappling . But then I watched a few wrestling and BJJ videos. In one BJJ video, a guy was at a tournament and was flipped over. He was paralyzed. And in another wrestling video, a guy tried to do a flying arm bar and the opponent flipped the guy over and the guy also was paralyzed. My greatest physical fear is being completely paralyzed.
And so you have become paralyzed with fear. So it’s true what they say: whatever you fear the most will happen to you. The leading causes of physical paralysis world wide are (1) stroke resultant from sedentary lifestyle, bad eating habits, and poor sleep schedules (2) traffic accidents Not everyone needs to fight. Not everyone needs to grapple. But no one should live in fear.

You can really tell what media someone has been consuming with these expectations. This sounds like someone who has had John Wick or Marvel movies on in the background for years. Just endless depictions of hyper competent violence. One of the very early James Bond movies had a great depiction of a fight, From Russia with love. Bond and the KGB villain are both middle aged guys who are comfortable shooting people in the back but aren't exactly used to wrapping their hands and putting in mouthguards. Their confontation takes place in a train bedroom, like when trains were slow and you had to sleep in them. It quickly devolves into the worst grappling you have ever seen and they both go pink from effort within about 30 seconds. Its not quite grimey and ugly because its still a Bond movie but its a mess. They're just trying to get better position while wearing business suits and bumping into furniture. And at the end someone is dead but its more luck and circumstance than a 'win' I think if they made more fight scenes like that we would have less bizarre expectations about what a real world on da streetz fight looks like
You know who can win a fight without hurting someone? Someone who's trained and physically fit...just take them down and restrain them; till police arrive if needed
If you are weak and unfit, the odds are massively against you. So if you want to win a street fight, get fit and strong. Short of that, focus on eyes nuts and throat (see how many pro fights get stopped for a nut check) - though it’s not easy. Keep in mind, the majority of ‘people on the street’ don’t have the mental or physical fortitude of a gym fighter, and want an ‘easy’ target. So - one of the best things you can do use the right mental approach. Don’t cower - fight back. Hard, fast and for as long as you can. You were gonna get a beating anyway. @ramsey - can you talk about that? The mental side of fighting - how hard training, difficult opponents, adversity in sparring etc build up your ‘mental’ game? How a beginner folds under a little bit of pressure, but an experience person has a ‘poker’ face?

A youtuber who was a boxer (bronze in the Olympics) and a bouncer said that his #1 punch for a street fight would be a cross to the solar plexus, #2 a cross to the chin.
said youtuber is Tony Jeffries who has actually bounced and knows that going to the ground for any reason in the street is very risky because of a second guy coming in or sharp pointy things being used. I love Ramsey's channel but he is not an expert in this area by any means and this isn't a great video.
Sometimes I think that we tend to forget what provokes fighting in the first place... Well, let me break it down for you guys... 1.) Someone has a bone to pick with another dude. This other dude annoys them, is seen as a dork/wimp/easy target, or has really, truly upset them. Sometimes the angry guy is ABSOLUTELY FURIOUS... 2.) (The feeling/thoughts turn to action): Anything can happen at this point, from sighing deeply for a while, calming down, shaking it off, etc., a sneak attack on the other guy, or a straight up confrontation... HOPEFULLY WITHOUT A WEAPON!!! 3.) The smackdown: The fight ensues. Regardless of who wins, the whole thing could result in minor injuries, all the way to freaking MURDER. 4.) The aftermath: Oh GEEZ... Oh GEEZ... Lets hope everyone can walk away without any permanent damage. OY. Isn't it wonderful that you are just reading this, rather than personally experiencing it? Of, course, some of you already have... 🤔🤔🤔🤔
@@RamseyDewey what if you were to be, say, a brown or black belt in BJJ? Would those credentials maybe let you help off the hook? Because they certainly can bite back at you if it was deemed you, as an expert, used too much force. Maybe it would be determined in court you had it under control
I'd argue if you are wimp, you are screwed anyway. Unless you have a weapon or get extremely lucky (eg. you have to hit the eyes and blind your attacker, without getting hit first).
Self defense is not really about using superior skill against someone much bigger than you. If you had to go into a forest with tigers and bears, you’re not going to take martial arts classes.
Not typical between trained fighters, unless cumulative, but trained on untrained I've heard, anecdotally, of legkicks ending fights. Probably easier in boots :D It is doing harm, can't take someone out with strikes otherwise, but at least not at risk of permanent brain injury or death from hitting the ground unconscious. That said - buy a pepper spray. Not perfect but with a bit of understanding the limits of that weapon and minimal training it might upgrade the wimp more than years of training.
People always want a cheat code to fighting. There's no special moves, if you're weak your kick in the balls will be a weak kick in the balls. Your punch to the liver will be a weak punch to the liver. You don't have to be some huge guy to be strong enough to hit hard but you can't be a total weakling and still hit hard enough to ring someone's bell, even if you hit their super secret chi nexus right in the balls.
I learned from the bjj open weight champion guys who can beat bigger and stronger opponents. All of them at least 200 pounds. They have strong base, and grip strength, and godlike stamina. Some of them are also very flexible. Martial art is not magic. You can win by the skill gap against somebody who is 33% bigger then you if you have good stamina and you are relativly strong to your size. But you can't bjj out a heavy log from yourself if you are not strong enough to move a heavy log. Same with boxing. You have to be a big heavy weight to win against a bigger heavy weight. You have to bring something strong to the table to win by playing your cards smartly...
That’s usually how it goes. I won a few open weight tournaments when I walked around at 185. But at 220 lbs now, it’s a lot easier to put that grappling technique to work, to be honest.
@@RamseyDewey same experience in the gym. The 170 lbs version of me can deal with people twice of my size from half guard, deep half, xguard. Belive or not i could even butterfly sweep them over my head. (For the 3th try) The 145 lbs version of me couldn't even touch somebody who is 170 lbs.
@Baron Von Hexenbrenner my thought process was a fight won is better a fight not fought at all. Obviously this won’t work all the time but no one wins all of their fights realistically. I guess you can try to grapple/wrestle and exceed in skill if the kiss-ass attempt fails which I assume Ramsey is going to talk about? But if the non-wimpy opponent also has skill over you there’s nothing you can do really but kiss ass. Edit: Or run but that’s losing the fight which doesn’t really matter in my opinion

Almost no fight can be "ended quickly and without causing damage", let alone without the advantages of size, skill and strength. Depending on the circumstances, even people WITH size, skill and strength don't end fights quickly or without inflicting, and taking, damage. There is no magic "comic book ad" solution to this problem, and size, skill and strength only change the odds, they don't negate them.
I remember when I was like 8 these big 11 year old kids wanted to beat me up. I was able to outrun every single one of them. Of course I was faster than average growing up.
I mean by definition you really haven't won the fight without hurting them. Even if they never land a hit but you have not done any/enough damage to remove their will/ability to continue then you have not won the fight
I'm guessing the answer is a unexpected baseball bat to the area where the skull meets the spine. Seems like the smartest thing to do in a fight. Can't hurt a corpse.
Rule number one don't get in the fight with people who start fights with people on the street are to stupid people, If someone is starting to try to fight with you just walk away and if they don't let you walk away then call the police. Because I guarantee if you get into a street fight with somebody who's trying to pick a fight you will go to jail so well the person who actually started the fight. So if you have some stupid person trying to start a fight with you they're gonna go to jail and so will you. So if someone's trying to prevent you from leaving just call the police. And threaten the person saying I'm going to call the police if you don't leave me alone and if they don't back off then do call the police, And they will go to jail and feel stupid because they started picking a fight and they're gonna be in a jail cell. And you won't and you'll be laughing at them because they'll be in a jail cell and you won't and you didn't fall for their trap, They're stupid stupid trap that those bullies are trying to bait you into.
I thonk BJJ in Medieval times would be worse then knowing nothing for Self Defense mostly because of Lavs and weapons most people had at the time atleast from most modern day schools of BJJ. While at the same time I think Wrestling and Judo would be insanely valuable BJJ is teribble against a spear or a sword.

Absolutely we shouldn't take the simple things for granted. Being able to stand up and walk around, for instance. Good video. Thank you.
My advice is avoid street fights as much as possible. People think they can just sucker punch someone and run away. I had a friend who got shot in the back and died doing that
And the multiple aggressors thing.
Thanks for sharing that. I think a lot of people have no idea of what violence and it's consequences really are.
its definitely hard to stay in shape while studying engineering (especially after it gave me an energy drink addiction lol), however i still make it out to training whenever i possibly can, at least 3 hours a week. still at a point where the warmups and sparring are a pretty good workout for me. great video as always

If you tell an attacker his shoe laces are untied, he might realize you're a gentleman and leave you be.
"How does a wimp win a fight?"
"They dont and they cant"
End video

Hi Ramsey, love your insights and the way you often go off on insightful tangents 😁
I have a question...
However, I have a medical issue that I haven't told them about, which has so far prevented me from competing due to the risks involved:
I am on anticoagulants due to a medical condition and because of this, doctors have said that I should not engage in any activity which involves hard knocks, especially to the head, as my chances of having intercranial bleeding is much higher than "normal" people.
My tactic during sparring has always been to avoid getting hit in my head as much as possible... Which is of course difficult, and I have been caught many times with some hard shots (but haven't had any adverse effects so far after several years.)
But I realise that in the ring my opponent may hit me with quadruple the amount of power of my sparring partners.
Thanks, man 💪
How does a wimp win a fight without hurting anyone?
The leading causes of physical paralysis world wide are (1) stroke resultant from sedentary lifestyle, bad eating habits, and poor sleep schedules (2) traffic accidents
Not everyone needs to fight. Not everyone needs to grapple. But no one should live in fear.
This guy should read the Bible more.

And at the end someone is dead but its more luck and circumstance than a 'win'
I think if they made more fight scenes like that we would have less bizarre expectations about what a real world on da streetz fight looks like
You know who can win a fight without hurting someone? Someone who's trained and physically fit...just take them down and restrain them; till police arrive if needed
Get out there and train, that's what you do!

Massive Barry White vibes in that outro there.

To get good enough to be a wimp means even more training. I might be able to wimp and I have because I trained excessively. No shorts cuts.
I'd argue if you are wimp, you are screwed anyway. Unless you have a weapon or get extremely lucky (eg. you have to hit the eyes and blind your attacker, without getting hit first).
How about hurting an openents fealings?
Are weapons off limits?
Self defense is not really about using superior skill against someone much bigger than you. If you had to go into a forest with tigers and bears, you’re not going to take martial arts classes.
Not typical between trained fighters, unless cumulative, but trained on untrained I've heard, anecdotally, of legkicks ending fights. Probably easier in boots :D
It is doing harm, can't take someone out with strikes otherwise, but at least not at risk of permanent brain injury or death from hitting the ground unconscious.
That said - buy a pepper spray. Not perfect but with a bit of understanding the limits of that weapon and minimal training it might upgrade the wimp more than years of training.
Use a Vulcan nerve pinch. :)
I got out, went to a station and found a train. What now coach? ;)

wimps always win by grabbing heavy or sharp objects & striking the opponent when its not expected
Without hurting anyone? Would it still be a "fight" then?
(For the 3th try)

But Ramsey; What if we get in a street fight? LOL
