We could already be deep into the most horrifying "answer" and not knowing it. There could be many alien civilisations in our backyard that hide, do their best to mask any energy signature of their civilisation and have no interest at all in answering our signals. We could be running around in a cosmic forst for more than 50 years by now, screaming, littering and leaving behind a trail of waste while the people we are looking for hide frightened in treetops not making a sound because they know that the forest is full of bears ready to tear everyone into pieces they can find.
Will be interesting if those possible aliens don’t end up being friendly like these naive A-holes are assuming while broadcasting our location, ID, etc… for all to hear. I love idiots being reckless and naive and making potentially life-ending decisions for all of humanity.
The problem is that there is an assumption that they can receive and interpret a foreign language. They might use a complete different form of communication and be baffled by 1s a d 0s. They could be sending us messages already but we can't receive or decipher their language.
We as a species have figured out fairly fast all things considered that the universe works entirely on maths and science overall. Regardless of species, we all share a fairly common language because it's the building blocks of the universe as a whole.
Binary isn't an arbitrary choice, all you need to store information is the ability to distinguish between two states, binary is the very representation of a distinction between two states
I think we all desire to know if there are other advanced lifeforms out there but don’t assume they would be passive or friendly. Sometimes ignorance really is bliss
I wonder how they marked the message to be 1. Distinguishable as important artificial signal 2. Self explanatory formatting of the binary data through universal rules to ease deciphering and break "language" barrier 3. If the data is then reconstructed from the signal correctly, how the actual content is designed to be understood correctly by alien life. Especially, if they don't see like us (no eyes or different ones), don't write or talk. If they are able to see like us at least, how do you design images to properly explain things instead of creating misconceptions? Like, arrow symbol doesn't work, images can be interpreted chronologically or as one thing.
Probably because binary code is the easiest to decode. Binary code is the easiest code for technology, so even though aliens might not use 0 & 1, they might use “symbol 1 & symbol 2” for the binary code they use for their technology. They just replace 0 with symbol 1 and 1 with symbol 2 and then vice versa probably… this is just a guess, I’m not a scientist
I think it’s also due to binary being pretty easy to decode. If there’s intelligent life that is also prone to recognize patterns like humans, it shouldn’t take longer than maybe a couple months to figure the whole message out. Even if they’re not very good at patterns, it’s still relatively easy to figure out
@@ukfarangkhonkaen9051 Even if the result was bad and we got invaded and killed, that would still be a cooler way to die then laying in a hospital bed being eaten alive by cancer.
It's so crazy that once they get the message that in the very slight chance that there is life that is also human like as in they can think and what not, what makes us think that they would understand the message. Like it is so fascinating, maybe they have a different way if communication that isn't language, that is so crazy to me, or maybe there is no life other than us, and we may never get to know the actual truth, not in our lifetime atleast. Maybe we are just aimlesly floating through a ever-growing universe who we may not ever understand, wow. Maybe we aren't alone but the other civilizations look wayy different than us, maybe they do look like us but they are a more evolved version of us, maybe a less evolved version of us. I wonder what a less evolved version of us would be capable of considering their environment. Maybe they would be just like us, because we all have the same needs as human and we evolve accordingly. Fascinating stuff. I don't know how I feel about probably never learning about the truth behind the universes existence.
I'd say life is rare but intelligent life is even more rarer. Look at earth, it took us billions of years to evolve one intelligent species that formed a civilization. Now I do think intelligent life exists but it's just absolutely rare but it's inevitable that if you look far and long enough that you will bump in to one because the universe is incomprehensibley big.
this can go two ways: we have an alien invasion due to the fact they are offended we think they’re strange and there’s no year of 2100 the aliens are completely chill and we become homies there’s no in between
You know... I love how trying to contact other civilizations in this universe hinges on the word if. Like it all depends on if it hits the target, if that place has life on it, if it has enough tech to receive and understand the signal, and if it has enough resources to potentially send a signal back. Lotta ifs there.
Well in that case we'll be lucky. If in the other hand we were a tribe sending a paper in a bottle to sway into foreign lands there's a high chance people won't understand what the message means but if they do they're equivalent to the American people compared to "us" African tribes
Guess we'll find out~ Realistically though if they're that advanced they likely already know about us and I doubt the message (which they would probably already know about and be able to intercept early with said wormholes and a little math) would change their minds on contacting us.
it would be absolutely insane if they actually got our message AND were able to send it back considering that if there were people on the planet they would need to be technologically advanced enough to be able to receive it and send another message
Dark Forest Hypothesis--a hypothesis that suggests that many alien civilizations exist in the universe, but they are silent and hostile because they fear being destroyed by other civilizations. The theory was first proposed in Liu Cixin's 2008 novel The Dark Forest. The theory is based on the idea that the intentions of any new civilization are unknown, so it's best to shoot first and ask questions later. This would ensure that the civilization's own species is not destroyed. As a result, all advanced civilizations remain silent, and any that do not are destroyed by other civilizations
Part of that theory is the possibility that the aliens are silent not because something MIGHT kill them, but because something WILL kill them. And they will kill us to shut us up, lest we get the attentions of whatever the 'something' is.
@@Dragonking-m6qOur politicians and scientists are too arrogant to understand how much danger we put ourselves in by exposing ourselves. The rest of us get to suffer for it.

Just wanna say that if we want to actually visit that planet we will need to fly for 20 years at the speed of light to get to the destination. For context the furthest manmade object is the voyage 1 spacecraft was launched at 1977 and has been traveling at the speed of 38,026.79 mph is less then a light DAY away from earth.
You don't need lightspeed travel if you figure out how to travel by creating wormholes. This would seem to be the most effective way to travel long distances in space; if you can do that you don't need to concern yourself with trying to figure out FTL travel.
@@Servenifer We assume light speed travel isn't possible either but if it was you'd need an insane amount of energy to go that fast. Probably some kind of dark matter reactor or engine. Out of the two wormholes seem easier if either are possible. Long distance space travel just isn't feasible without one of those two options.
even if light speed is somehow possible to achieve in the grand scheme of the universe it’s still very slow. so potential wormholes is the only way space travel could be achieved

its not only whether or not there's life on the planet, its the chance it has life while the signal is moving through the planet. life might exist a few million years after the signal or right after they extinct
wishful thinking, its more likely that any alien civilization to ever exist dies out before inventing light speed travel. I mean think of us, right now we dont have the slightest clue or theory as to how our flesh and blood bodies could possibly survive light speed travel. Do you think we can solve this problem in the next 2 billion years before our sun goes dark? I give it a 50/50 chance at most, we'll probably be able to visit nearby galaxies but not at the speed of light, and if its the same for aliens then contact is nearly impossible
If there are humanoids alive on that planet, I sure hope they are friendly. A 160 pound human would weigh 800 pounds on that distant world. (5 times the size of earth) Imagine how strong they would be evolving in that gravity.
This is like the Dark Forest hypothesis. (Basically everyone in the universe stays silent because contacting another advanced race is like inviting destruction because they’re more likely to shoot first, ask questions later) the only difference is, Earth isn’t a big enough blip on the radar yet to garner attention.
Dark Forest theory is also from a book series, the first being The Three Body Problem. I find it kind of weird how often the term is being thrown around like its the only logical conclusion for encountering other species when it kind of feels like the most caveman reaction to receiving information. If they got to the point of keeping an eye on the sky for other races chances are they're doing it for curiosity as well. And I doubt it'll end up like those books where the solar system is turned into a 2 dimensional plane floating in space lmao
Sending a message out to space while being naively optimistic that it is impossible that the Aliens the message is meant for will want to wipe us out to avoid possible competition once they find us… Smart, real smart guys, love them making decisions like this for literally the entire human race😊👍👌 Why be cautious and think critically when you can be stupid, reckless and naive!

Nothing crazy that's hoe evolution works. Some out there thinks we are ugly and horrifying too
It’s worse if they either ask our exact location or just tell us to shut the hell up.

Regardless of species, we all share a fairly common language because it's the building blocks of the universe as a whole.

There aint nothing there
I wonder how they marked the message to be
1. Distinguishable as important artificial signal
2. Self explanatory formatting of the binary data through universal rules to ease deciphering and break "language" barrier
Excellent questions.
Why do scientists assume aliens will understand our system?
Is there a scientific reasons they would understand binary systems?
Binary is easiest and first counting system for humans so we hope that it is the same for other civilizations.
I also believe the scientists utilize prim numbers as well for a similar reason
Probably because binary code is the easiest to decode. Binary code is the easiest code for technology, so even though aliens might not use 0 & 1, they might use “symbol 1 & symbol 2” for the binary code they use for their technology. They just replace 0 with symbol 1 and 1 with symbol 2 and then vice versa probably… this is just a guess, I’m not a scientist
I think it’s also due to binary being pretty easy to decode. If there’s intelligent life that is also prone to recognize patterns like humans, it shouldn’t take longer than maybe a couple months to figure the whole message out. Even if they’re not very good at patterns, it’s still relatively easy to figure out
@@thepooey but even still, that binary would translate into english

Now I do think intelligent life exists but it's just absolutely rare but it's inevitable that if you look far and long enough that you will bump in to one because the universe is incomprehensibley big.

the aliens are completely chill and we become homies

You know... I love how trying to contact other civilizations in this universe hinges on the word if. Like it all depends on if it hits the target, if that place has life on it, if it has enough tech to receive and understand the signal, and if it has enough resources to potentially send a signal back. Lotta ifs there.
Finally, a radio message that doesn’t take 500 years to get to it’s target. And the one I can finally atleast live to see.

As a result, all advanced civilizations remain silent, and any that do not are destroyed by other civilizations
yeah that terrorfies me
Part of that theory is the possibility that the aliens are silent not because something MIGHT kill them, but because something WILL kill them. And they will kill us to shut us up, lest we get the attentions of whatever the 'something' is.
We are clearly not advanced enough to realize this

Technically speaking, we've been emitting radio waves into space since the day radio was invented.
We should be sending messages like this every year so if an advanced life form doesnt catch it, they can catch it the next year
Just wanna say that if we want to actually visit that planet we will need to fly for 20 years at the speed of light to get to the destination.
