There are three toed sloths that live in remote forests and have never even seen a human being (never mind a troll level) that dodge more trolls than Carl. It's not a high bar.
Here’s a secret. Carl is just as good a player as Ryu. Carl plays dumb and into the trolls because it’s funny and content and his audience likes it.which it is. Plus he likes seeing what creative things people make so he tries to hit every single troll. Love Carl and Ryu though.
i feel like ryu didn't appreciate how insane the fact that the flagpole was there, because you pass through that section the first time. defender's video explaining it is so brilliant
I half expected Ryu to figure out how to cheese it by accident more or less and end up clearing the level straight from the first time you see CP1. I want to say the video explaining it mentioned there was some insanely small window of time (maybe a single frame?) that you could jump up and actually hit the flag pole to finish the level instead of CP1 originally.
The original version of Defender's level had the psychedelic effect on the flagpole, to drown out the victory music. Geek got got _so hard_ by that when she played it, she thought it was a real CP1 right until the victory screen.
That's why I said 'modern' troll levels. Specifically the ones popularized by and made for a certain handful of streamers. There's been an arms race since the early days in terms of their 'meta' and 'sophistication', and a lot of stuff in them preys on the user's prior knowledge and them having been being conditioned to respond a certain way by previous levels.
That's right. If he continues, there'll come a day when he already knows a bunch of possible outcomes and ends upt like Carl: not knowing which one it will be next.
@@saisyuumaho It also definitely helps that his experience with troll levels is basically only from endless super expert. He knows all of the "standard" tricks that you might expect to be more common to the point where they more or less don't even register with him it seems. More elaborate tricks he's never seen but also doesn't know to expect really so he doesn't try to get into mind games about what will or won't happen, he just reacts in the moment. Carl's biggest enemy is that he tries to think through everything as he's playing to "beat" the troll which is really just playing into it and that's basically the "arms race" of the entire thing as you're saying.
The "PG13" was because the original level had a lot of cannon + sawblade phallic shapes, but got deleted by Nintendo. This was the censored reupload. If only Ryukahr had seen what the "censored" room used to be
17:00 you shouldn't restart in a situation like this. good troll levels will never have a softlock unless the level breaks, and restarting can ruin the flow of the level.
16:50 - the trick to keep all of the powerups from spawning is to keep moving left and right while jumping. So you start in the bottom-left corner, then jump right, arc back against the spikes at the top of your jump, land in the bottom-left, and repeat.
Yeah I mean I haven't even owned a single Nintendo console myself since Gameboy Color, but somehow really got into watching these Mario Maker videos for a long time now.
I like your way of playing troll levels (and regular levels as well). Carl's actively trying to get trolled or just stands there and is waiting to take it. Or he's explaining what he's going to do for 5 minutes just to get fucked anyways. You on the other hand are just playing the level like a normal person. Thank you for that, Ryu.
It's nice to see other streamers uploading troll level playthroughs. I originally saw these particular 2 levels being played by Carlsagan 42. I must admit that if I haven't seen Carl's playthrough, I wouldn't have appreciate this video as much as I did. Something amazing about Carl is his passion for deconstructing levels and questioning, while being trolled and mezmerized, how the heck creators come up with the setups. I think a great deal of the troll enjoyment comes from appreciating the weird contraptions and technical detail that comes into magic to make it work. I'm glad Ryu enjoyed it!
To be fair, the Troll Level meta can be really weird sometimes. There's troll levels which are good at catching inexperienced players off guard, but there's also troll levels (typically those made expressly for someone like Carl or Juz) which are better at catching players off guard who play a lot of troll levels. In doing so, though, sometimes the level is easier for a less troll-savvy player. Defender's level here, for example, was made with a lot of streamers who play troll levels in mind, so it's skewed to prey on the expectations of players who have "seen it all" as it were.
Carl doesn't fall for trolls intentionally unless he's already passed the section. All of his content is taken straight from his Livestreams, you'll see that his "pretending" is just how he always behaves

Troll levels are a lot better in MM2 than in MM1, since people are using the new tools to focus on really creative setups, withholding information, reversing expectations, etc - basically making them more puzzle-oriented. There was some of that kind of thing with overlay pipes and hidden blocks and stuff back in MM1 too, but overall troll levels were a lot more skill-based, which made them pretty different than these ones. Also, the culture around them has really matured, with rules like "never softlock the player" (leading to the wonderful anti-softlocks) making playing troll levels in MM2 an entirely different experience than MM1, where you are absolutely guaranteed to be softlocked. I totally agree that troll levels are the pinnacle of Mario Maker gameplay, but troll levels have changed so much (and are a lot friendlier and more accessible now) that I don't think it's too odd for ryu to only now be discovering how good they've gotten.
@@HikaruOfTheWind Except that there were troll levels that were just as good in MM1. Mostly they were made by the same crowd that makes troll levels in MM2. They're more popular nowadays, so that's why less people knew about them, but they were there. Just look at CarlSagan42's *Troll Levels* playlist on RUclips, and it's 71 videos of MM1 troll levels, with multiple levels in each video, and many of them are just as good as those in MM2, taking into account the evolution of the genre (eg. there are no anti-softlocks, sadly). Also, "don't softlock the player" always was a thing. It's just that taking a wrong turn back then led to death instead of an anti-softlock.
I hope to see Ryu do more of hopefully some well-constructed troll level recommendations. There's obviously a lot of garbage which shows up in Super Expert, but well constructed troll levels are a fun experience.

I guess I just thought that since Ryu and Carl run in similar circles he would've come across Defender previously. I remember Carl playing this level, and it was hilarious!
Can someone explain what happens at the end? If the goal is right there, why wouldn't Ryu win right after getting cp1 the first time? Sorry for the stupid question but I really don't understand
When he first comes through that pipe you’ll see there’s a block on a curved track, that serves the purpose of immediately pushing him left so that he doesn’t touch the flagpole. The spring will also push left if you jump, according to the level creator there is a frame perfect jump that will let you collect the flagpole the first time you come through that pipe, but not likely to happen during the first play through.

Ryu diving head first into good troll levels. It's a hole you will never come out of, my friend. It only gets more fun from here.
Hey Ryu, welcome to the world of good troll levels. Where it's not about dumb stuff like rando kaizos and mob spamming. But clever and inventive machinery, funny deaths and incredible surprises. Defender is amazing, and there's chunk of other amazing troll creators. Ask Carl or DGR for some good levels, I'm sure they'll find you some great ones :D
"I liked that one better than the other one"
-drops a like on the original level, but not on this one
That second troll level gave me a sense of deja vu. I believe DGR has played it before.
2:47 had me dying cx
You know these super Mario maker video from you are like Saturday morning cartoons just a good time
You got to do another batch of these troll levels! Watching you suffer through these was priceless 😂
"Don't be like that man .... don't be like this.... let me touch it" Ryukahr 2019
Yeah, that troll level by defender is the best one I know. The ending is amazing haha
I'm used to DGR just not understanding anything whatsoever but Ryu is just like: "wait l skipped 17 trolls? Ok cool"
Troll levels are the best to watch. You should do more. I like dgr but you're commentary is 10 times better.
Defender made a whole explanation video about how he made the AusTROLLian level. It's epic!
That first level was the best. The looks on your face just cracked me up 😂
