The reason why rear hubs/bearings/wheels/derailleurs/brakes/discs break more often is simply because the front wheel is throwing all sorts of crap onto them. Front wheel axle/bearings/discs/brakes are already out front when the mud you're riding through gets up that high, they'll only get a bit of tyre spray, meanwhile the rear end gets slathered in crap. There's a similar effect on road bikes: did you ever notice that you get more flats on the rear tyre than the front one? That's because most objects pointy enough to pierce a tyre are laying flat on the road. Only when you ride over them with your front tyre they stand up to accept the rear tyre with the point on. This effect is especially pronounced when riding in the wet, as the fluid sucks up particles more efficiently, and keeps them in any position for longer. (and yes, the rear tyre is usually more worn out and thinner.) The most efficient way you can have your components last longer is: keep them clean. Repack bearings often with enough grease (that serves as a seal keeping dirt out), thoroughly clean the chain, use dry lube and wipe as much as you can off the surface, clean the cassette and chainrings. Keep anything that moves against anything else clean.
I just use molybdenum disulfide Moly lube. $7cdn at Canadian Tire for a 400 gram(14 oz) tube, much cheaper on sale i use it on everything. If it's good enough for a a 3000# care at highway speed , it it's great for bikes. I also use in my motorbikes and dirt bikes. no probleme in the last 40 years of using it.

Vaseline is a great lubricant on a lot of things you wouldn't expect it to be. Would I put it on my expensive mountain bike Fork, absolutely not. You want to use a lightweight oil religiously before every ride. That's the best thing you can do for your fork to make it last a long time.

Depends on the sound you want it to make. Thin oil makes the freehub pawls click harder thus making more noise. Packing the freehub full of grease is also not reccomended as it can prevent the pawls from locking in place allowing the freeweel to rotate both directions freely. I would use thicker grease on the freehub seals and thin oil on the pawls.
@@jamble7k Yeah, in that case I would use thicker grease but not pack the freehub full of it! Also put some grase on the seals so no water or derbis can get in. Good luck! :)
The lubricant used in a free hub will vary with different manufacturers. Hope hubs seem to cope well with thicker grease and ship with a relatively high viscosity grease inside, so I'd never use oil in that hub. Inversely, I9 hubs are very sensitive to grease. Originally shipping with free hub oil they only recently started using a grease, and it is very thin. If I tried using the grease I normally use on hope hubs inside of an I9 hub it would likely prevent the pawls from properly engaging and damage the hub.
#askGMBNTech #askGMBNTech #askGMNBTech Help please: Does it change the head angle, if I switch from a 51mm offset fork to a 44 mm. I know it changes the trail, but not if it slackens the head angle, this is what I want to avoid. Love the show
The guy with the 3x9 transmission wanting to go 1x. I do a lot of street riding with my very old 3x6 gears. I've been looking for a new bike. Some of the low gears in the 1x systems are lower than mine, but not one of them has a high gear high enough even for an old duffer like myself. Is there simply no need for say the 4.0x top gear on 2x and 3x MTB transmissions? And because I can only judge gears by comparing them to what I'm familiar with 26" Low .88x (28:32) High 3.43x (48:14) I definitely want a lower low gear for climbing. 1xs are a bit better at this end. My top end is okay (for me) but I use it a couple of times on a ride, (Probably mostly on pavement) and I wouldn't want to go any lower. The top end of an 30:11-42 is 2.73x (Adjusting for the difference between 26" and 29" wheels I do this. Wheel size x (Front/Back)/26, For 26" wheels. So 26x 3.43/26 = 3.43 but a 29 x (30/11)/26 = 3.05x much lower Low gears: .88, for 29" wheels 29x (30/42)/26 =.79 The 29 to 26 of course is just 1.12x (front/rear)
Glad I watched this! Now I realized that this is different channel #askgmbn than those other "I have red shirt, which colour should my helmet be" kind of questions. This was nice. #AskGMBNTech: Hello I very like your videos. I have a Sram X3 rear derailleur and I want to change it for a Shimano Deore M-6000. So do I need to change the whole freehub or is it enough if I change the freehub body?
Have you ever put scales under each wheel once your MTBs are set up how you like them Doddy , does each end have the same weight , if not 50/50 is the distribution still the same on all your bikes ? How about the EMTB you ride is that biased slightly more rear ?
#AskGMBNTech I want to upgrade my front fork (suntour xcm rlo 27.5 120mm) what would be my options on a fairly low budget (something like Manitou Markhor or an Epixon). I would really like to keep at least 120mm of travel (how bad would it be if I wanted to run more travel on my Ghost Kato 3 2016?). Could you tell me more about the suntour Epixon and suntour upgrade program?
I took a long break from riding, from 2001 to 2018, being a taller rider I found that current bikes are leaps and bounds ahead of the sizing then to start, and my tweaking was much less.
I hear you, I was the same. My last bike was a 2009 hardtail - terrible for a 6’ rider, new bike is 2018 Hardtail, longer by 4"overall. I never understood why bikes only got taller and more unstable for climbing as the rider got taller, same goes for descending, wheel base and chainstay length were not proportional enough to frame "size". 29er was too expensive back then for me, this would have helped a little. With longer bikes nowadays suiting taller riders, I wonder if there is an adverse effect on shorter riders, should XS and S frames have 26" wheels(and shorter chainstay), M and L 27.5" and so on?
@@geremywinters8186 I hear you, I ran a smaller bike back then because the stand over heights were too high because I'm a bit longer in the torso. Depending on the brand, some smaller bikes are that way. The Liv that fit my lady best was a S, but the proportions of everything were better than the smalls most other brand she tried.
@@geremywinters8186 Looking for the right bike for my 5 foot wife was very difficult, even now, the wheels look massive relative to the tiny frame. It wouldn't be a bad idea to scale wheel size to frame size, maybe even travel. I noticed some brands make the smaller sizes headtube slacker, otherwise the wheel would hit the downtube on smaller frames.
#AskGMBNTech Ok, one more time : which brand is better between Mavic and DT Swiss, technology and reliability wise ? Is it a toss up, or are there some pros and cons on both ? Thinking about the Mavic Deemax and DT Swiss 1501 series.
I'm around 210lbs and won't know how much air I need to put in the tires. Also I just got a bike and don't care for the handle bars and am thinking about changing it. Is this possible?
The rockrider branded frames look alright. The btwin bikes just seem bottom end. If you buy a mtb for 300 euros you will get a street bike that looks like a mtb, it wont perform on trails. I would suggest looking for an older decent 2nd hand mtb. Do some research about drive train differences, forks etc. This video shows a good overview: ruclips.net/video/K882pvG395w/видео.html
If you can stretch to £900/1000 have a look at go outdoors calibre bossnut full sus it's got decent rockshox gear on it, I brought one for my nephew 2 weeks ago and it's a really good bike and it'll last you years. I had a go on it and it's as good as my bike which cost over twice the price.. B twin mtbs are pretty useless just like Halfords bikes if you plan to take it off road. Honestly check out go outdoors bikes.

@. Hi Doody, great show. I have a question about pedals. I have been using clipless pedals since the mid 90's. I currently use the Crank Brother Mallet 2 pedals. How ever I have taken your advice and bought a set of Shimano Saint flat pedals and a Five Ten Freerider canvas shoes. My problem is when I use the flat pedals my hands and feet start to feel numb. I have changed the just over 12 months ago and did get hand numbness. I have adjust the role of the bars and this seems to have sorted it. When I use my flat pedals it the hand numbness come back and my feet go numb. Which I don't get using my clipless pedals. What do you think could have changed with my position on the bike using the different types pedals. I know sometime with the flat pedals the ball of my foot if not over the pedal axle. I did change my bike from a 2x10 to a 1x11 mainly Shimano SLX with an 34 Absolute Black oval ring and 11X50 Sunrace cassette.
What is the aproach of setting your suspension when you ride flat pedals. Since I've got a Mega 2018 Pro I've struggle to find an good balance between the front and the back of the bike. #askGMBNTech

As in holding the brake on with the zip tie? It's to force fluid down which forces air up. As it sits little air bubbles that maybe in the system will be end up in the reservoir.
I got a question for you Doddy, I'm buying a used, but well maintained bike. Are there any things to look out for while buying or things to change after the purchase?
Why can't my rockshox recon accept bottomless tokens? Can I do anything (on the cheap) to fix that. I feel like I put in far too much air pressure so I could get the progressiveness correct. #askGMBNtech
if it doesnt have a negative air chamber but uses a coil spring you can put oil in the airspring. If it does have a negative air spring you could maybe glue a piece of high density closed cell foam to the air cap

I use thick grease on mine, I used oil last time and it didnt even lasted a month lol

Help please:
Does it change the head angle, if I switch from a 51mm offset fork to a 44 mm. I know it changes the trail, but not if it slackens the head angle, this is what I want to avoid.
Love the show

I have a brand x ascend dropper and have put grease under the seal but it still sounds and feels gritty
Roelof Oelofse did you grease the post itself?
So 26x 3.43/26 = 3.43 but a 29 x (30/11)/26 = 3.05x much lower
Low gears: .88, for 29" wheels 29x (30/42)/26 =.79 The 29 to 26 of course is just 1.12x (front/rear)
8:42 I have that exact stem and that GMBN Top cap omg!!!

Glad I watched this! Now I realized that this is different channel #askgmbn than those other "I have red shirt, which colour should my helmet be" kind of questions. This was nice. Waiting to see the geometry video! Feels like my CTD is not working in my rear shock. I don't know if it's busted or if I don't feel it. I have had that bike for this winter.

Hi doddy,
My seatpost spins around altough I use the highest torque I'm allowed to use on the clamp, I tried a new clamp, yet it spins. I already applied assemply paste and it doesn't work, but sometimes it creeks when i'm moving on my seat.
Any advice?
All parts are stock and Aluminium.
Maik Eckert bigger seatpost?

Good day. Lovin' your show.
I just wanna ask if I can use rubber mastic tape as a substitute on my tire patches. More helpful videos to come. Cheers from the Philippines! Mabuhay!

Hello I very like your videos.
How about the EMTB you ride is that biased slightly more rear ?
the bikes weight is pretty irrelevant compared to the rider on it.

I want to upgrade my front fork (suntour xcm rlo 27.5 120mm) what would be my options on a fairly low budget (something like Manitou Markhor or an Epixon).
Geometry has definitely changed a lot since then!
I use k.y. jelly.....
Either turn up the music so it's not annoying or turn it off completely. It's sooooo annoying when you can barely hear it.
Great questions and great answers.
#AskGMBNTech Magura MT7 vs. Sram Code RSC - Which one is better for enduro riding?
Please please Gmbn tech , get rid of the background music loop . Can't concentrate on what you are saying ... It distracts so much.
soo annoying don't know how it adds to the video Mate . pls remove the song it would help us focus more. Stay Safe take care
#askgmbntech rate a btwin mtb. Are they a good beginner mtb bike?
You really shouldn't get a btwin, what's your budget? Maybe the comment section can help
Yes :)
Rather get a Giant ATX 2 or a 2nd hand bike. A good friend of mine hast a btwin Rockrider 520 and it's crap, even for 300 euros...
#AskGMBNTech I was looking at a new mtb. I like to ride everything and I look to have fun over racing. Should I go for 140mm rear and 160mm travel or 161mm and 160mm? I am looking between the Evil Offering or Evil Wreckoning. Thank you Doddy!
Whats the deal with the elevator music in the background ? Its annoying!

#Askgmbntech Hey Doddy, can you tell me how I can find the right mounting hardware for a new shock? Thanks for your great videos!
My dropper post wobbles slightly in the main casing how would I be able to fix it
I had been using vaseline for years
Dadu Machar BRUH Same here 💀💀
It must be a Brand X Thing mine did the same
it would have been more accurate to say do not use Vaseline on Latex or natural rubber as most synthetic rubber polymers such as urethane, neoprene and others used in mordern suspension forks for seals etc, are impervious to most petroluem products! (but not all)...
#AskGMBNtech Hi Dodd, I've noticed a super annoying squeak coming from the front hub. Bearings feel fine when spun by hand. Is it possible it's coming from between the end caps & bearings, and how can I get in there to clean and grease things up?
#AskGMBNTech I have just bought an Avanti Competitor S 1 Plus. It shares the same frame as its big brother the Competitor S 2 which comes with an external dropper post. I'm wandering if I should add a dropper post to it now as I am concerned that manufactures will go 100% internal cabling in their line up. Also what upgrades should I do to it for a beginner?

what about red rubber grease from castrol or other manufacturer? it is made for rubbers as they say and is based on vegetable oil as i remember.

Hi Doddy! Do you prefer videos (RUclips link) or pictures for Bike Caves? I want to send something in. Thank you!!

Don't you watch C4 The inbetweeners? 🤣🤣🤣
so is it YES or NO?
Can u use it on your front suspension to make it go smooth
What is the aproach of setting your suspension when you ride flat pedals. Since I've got a Mega 2018 Pro I've struggle to find an good balance between the front and the back of the bike. #askGMBNTech
#askgmbntech can you do a vid on how to change bareing in a rear wheel hub thanks for the great video keep it up the grate work
How did you get on with baby oil in your brakes?
Honestly, answers seems to be good until its not. Vaseline will destroy the o-rings. On the other videos he also suggested its ok to use chain oil in cables, which is also not advisable, in can rot the plastic in it.
Cool video, but, what kind of grease can i use on fork seals ? PTFE, calcium, lithium ?
Fork oil.
@@truantray but but.. but.. Rockshox says grease on seals after lower leg service if u don't replace the seals :))

PhreshFunk hopefully by better they mean ditch it. I usually ignore comments on this sort of thing but it’s completely pointless and distracting
@PhreshFunk i'm not hating on the video, I actyally like it but it would be better if they worked on that music a bit more. I know that this isn't a video about music, but if it's possible for the video to be more enjoyable why not make suggestions?
@@stephenlord599 actually what i mean it's just lower the volume by a lot and change songs during the video not loop the same one, it's annoying and distracting
@Luis Figueiredo yeah exactly, if they really want to put music they should lower the volume and don't loop it
Please just get rid of that annoying music. It spoils the information being given.....
At what temp does fork oil freeze, and do I need to replace it come summer time?? I store my bike in a shed that gets below freezing, and I ride in temps at 0*F and colder. Thanks!!

#AskGMBNTech why brakes feel harder when you put zip tie around leaver

What watch are you wearing? Love that watch!
It's from Garmin.
