Ronnie Lott is the prototype defensive player. The man hit everyone like a force of nature, and he made the toughest opponents feel fear on a primal level. That icey stare of his would make a raging bull climb a tree and start meowing for help...lol
Met Ronnie Lott many years ago at the Cow Palace after he had retired from football. Very nice and humble man. Got an autographed jersey of his. One of my favorite football players and Niners of all time. Missed him.
I grew up watching the 49ers win multiple Super Bowls, Ronnie Lott is my all-time favorite Niner. Met him a couple times and he’s a super chill dude. No arrogance towards fans
I met Ronnie Lott in 1990 when I tried out with the 9er's. I wasn't anything but another rookie (tryout) but it meant the world to me that the best defensive back in the NFL said 2 sentences to me in the locker room. Lol my tryout didn't last long, but the memory of him encouraging me will last forever. This video brought tears to my eyes not only of a great football player playing the game he loved, but of what he meant to his family, and me. I will always remember my short time at camp and your encouragement. Thank you sir and congratulations on a great football life. 🙏🏾
There is some irony in that title because before he was The Hardest Hitting Safety in The NFL, he was The Hardest Hitting Cornerback in The NFL. Truly on everyone's Top 10 Lists whether you are talking Cornerbacks or Safeties. You did not want to play on his! side of the field.
What I've heard is he was physically washed-up by the time he played for the Jets, and they brought him in just for his sorely-needed leadership in the locker room - there aren't a lot of examples of that in NFL history.
I think I am a fan of players more than a fan of one team. It is great to see this side of him. Watching his daughter doing this interview you can see how proud she is of her dad. Great football player and great father and husband. That brings his level of greatness much higher.
22:55 - I know this is about Ronnie Lott, but Walter Payton was a BEAST. Look at how he ATE that hit, stayed on his feet and kept moving. Damn. Much respect to both athletes.
Walter Payton played like a man possessed. There was no such thing as running out of bounds. If you wanted to bring him down you knew you were going to get hit, and maybe be left looking like a fool. Now I know why. Running up that steep hill he ran built power in his legs and you could see how he’d break tackles by driving with those powerful legs. That’s why Jim Brown respected him so much, because Walter played like him.
I had moved to the Bay Area in 1981 to go to college and was lucky enough to live there through the Niners glory years and watch Ronnie every Sunday. What a fantastic player, father a great businessman now too. And Haileys love for her dad is just so touching. What beautiful film.
Although i was a defensive end and LB in high school, i absolutely idolized Ronnie Lott, Joe Montana, Jerry Rice and the 49ers as a kid!!!! I didn't care about nothing but laying people out just like he did and it made me a very intense player that later earned me a college scholarship to play football!!! Thanks Ronnie, God Bless n stay safe guys!!!!
absolutely by far to this day. When everyone wanted Joe's jersey I only wanted Ronnie's. Met him last year for the first time on the golf course this past summer. I was volunteering during a charity event. Out of the corner of my eye, I turned my head and I knew. I always looked at him as the player on the field. A career ender. In reality out of all the legends I've met by far the kindest light-hearted soul of them all. I respect the man even more Thank you Ronnie for teaching me more than you would ever know. Respect!!!
One of my favorite players of all time. Hit like a bull and was a ball hawk. Only defensive back to earn All Pro at every single defensive back position(CB, FS & SS). 10x Pro Bowl selection, 8x All Pro, 2x Interceptions leader, 63 interceptions, 730 interception yards, 1,146 tackles, 5 Touchdowns, 16 forced fumbles, 17 fumble recoveries. HOF #42 retired with the San Francisco 49ers. Greatest defensive back of all time, One of the greatest defensive players of all time.
Payton was a BEAST…also shows the flaw of Ronnie Lott’s tackling style, the way he wouldn’t wrap his arms arms around somebody. You see that a ton nowadays which leads to a lot of extra yards Ronnie Lott was a legend too…
I had the unique opportunity to work out with Ronnie Lott in the summer of '92 at Menlo Atherton High School. The same year, he went to the Oakland Raiders. Awesome guy! I learned a lot from him that summer.
Speaking for all 49er fans, we love you RONNiE 🗣️ you ARE the BEST that has EVER done it and you gave us so much JOY and the main reason i am proud too be a san FRANCiSCO 49er's fan.. amazing person, player, dad and husband. you TRULY are the man.. Sincerely Jamie, 49er's proud.
I love you Ronnie Lott. From a Steelers fan, thank you for every single play that you made and thank you for the great tape we got to watch in high school to make us better. I will say this with the most respect your daughter can most definitely get it.
And the retiring players wondered how long they’d live into retirement and if it’d be their heart or brain that would give out on them before they hit 50.
I've posted in another video, I'm very fortunate to have been able to watch the team of the Eighties from row 20 seat 18 on the North West end zone. Thanks to the Boney family I was there through 2 championship games. It was always one of my favorite things to watch Ronnie Lott do his thing in the middle of the field every game.

Giants fan here. Ronnie Lott has nothing but my total respect. I would just like to know if he respects Mark Bavaro. Thank you Ronnie for being a part of one of the best football rivalries the NFL has ever seen. God Bless
Ronnie was my childhood idle growing up. I modeled my playing style after him. I had a great football experience both as a player and fan because of him. This was an excellent tribute to his story. The best part is having his daughter pay tribute to him and his career.
I remember him from a youth. the San Bernardino Southwest Tigers was pivotal moment for me. I couldn't fully challenge him for the QB spot like I wanted to. He was a constant motivator from that time on. High school saw my school (Pacific High) Against Eisenhower in Basketball when I was held out the game. Another opportunity lost to test myself against him. Proud of him though. Missed him when he ca.e to my town of Paradse before it burned down in 2018
Could you imagine...R. Lott(FS), R. White(DE), A. Donald(DT)), L T(OLB), R. Lewis(MLB,ILB), E. Reed(SS), C. Bailey(CB), D. Sanders(CB), J. Greene(DT), V. Miller(OLB), M. Strahan(DE)...
I'm an old school Hawks fan from the UK but without hesitation I proudly say I had the privilege of seeing Ronnie Lott up close when those people played the Dolphins over here at Wembley Stadium when I was kid back in 1988. My seat was at the back of the endzone and I remember vividly during the pre game warm up Lott walked to the endzone and touched all four pylons. He was right in front of us, there was a collective OMG 😮 as I and everyone around me were in total awe of the great man. Go Hawks
Greatest defensive back of all time, there's no questioning. He had 7 picks and returned 3 for touchdowns as a corner, intercepted 10 passes and led the league his first full season at free safety, and had 8 picks leading the league as a strong safety. He excelled at all three positions in the defensive backfield.
Ronnie played the game at the highest level . I loved how he came back to Eisenhower high school and came and spoke to us on how to play the game . This was our treat before our Friday night lights game ! What better motivation than that ! Lott is the best ever player and teammate!
It's hard for me to choose between Ronnie Lott and Brian Dawkins, as far as who my favorite safety of all time is. It's a toss up, impossible to pick since I'm not personally a fan of either the eagles or 49ers. But man, these guys were special, from a bygone era. True headhunters that instilled TRUE fear in the minds of the opposition. If you tried to catch a ball over the middle of the field, you were gonna regret it. To me, Ronnie Lott was the original. Brian Dawkins carried the torch after. I mean the guy had an alter ego and he embraced it, and so did the fans. Weapon X. I mean you can't not love it. As a Giants fan, I still have the vision in my mind of B Dawk absolutely de-cleating and body slamming Brandon Jacobs to the ground during a run play. Brandon Jacobs was like 6'4 and over 250 lbs. A way bigger dude than Dawkins was. Didn't matter. Laid him out.
They were some quality hits within the rules and whistle, I don't think he did a lot of leading with the helmet, just a solid football player, good tackler, hitter, hey the guy said "kamikaze"
Years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Ronnie He came to Chico California to place a charity basketball game. I just arrived lm in a wheelchair I was sitting under the basketball hoop. He came up to me and introduced himself. He was so kind to me. He signed my book that had all their pictures in it. His autograph is the only one of a famous person I have and still have. After the game my husband and I went out to dinner. I went to the restroom and when I came back. My husband and his friend teased me that Ronnie had bought me this rose. Anyways I just wanted to say he is such a nice man. 😊😊😊
Ronnie Lott was my favorite player when I was growing up. Had his poster up on the wall. Wear number 42 as well. And when my coach wanted me to switch from playing free safety to linebacker, I refused because Ronnie played free safety. And to think today I tell my son to listen to his coach.
Heavy. Peace to Ronnie Lott and The Magic Man. Those Niners Teams and Lakers Teams were amazing. Its common now however I think Lott was the first football player to wear Jordans on the field.
I happened to be looking at bits of the infamous 1987 49ers loss to the Vikings in the Divisional playoff round, and was shocked to see this happen on a 3rd down play: ruclips.net/video/T7zxeDQ1pWg/видео.html Ronnie Lott went helmet-to-helmet and couldn't get up for TWO MINUTES while the doctors asked him who he was and where he was. Then he PLAYED THE SECOND HALF. No wonder he's not all that coherent these days... Even more chilling thought was the announcers saying that Lott told them he wanted to hit people the way his strong safety teammate, Jeff Fuller does. I always considered Fuller (drafted in 1984) to be Lott's protege and I was a big fan of him, but two years later Fuller broke his neck making a Lott-style helmet-to-helmet tackle, and never played again. Fuller can walk, but can't use one of his arms. Former 49ers owner Eddie DeBartolo kept Fuller on the roster the following season (even though he could play ever again, it kept him on the payroll and accrued another year for his player pension benefits), then set up an annuity that pays him $100,000 a year for the rest of his life, because DeBartolo was the best owner any team ever had.
Quote “Who is the best safety of all time?” “Who is the only payer in nfl history to end with less fingers than he started with? That’s all I have to say” He isn’t just one of the best safeties ever, he is one of the best players ever.
I think Lott would struggle somewhat in the modern game because he simply lacked top end speed. Someone like LT had physical (6'3 240lb 4.6 speed) attributes in the 80s that would translate into the modern game seamlessly.
My favorite DB Of all time only reason why he did not win defensive rookie of the year With his 9 interceptions. It's because lawrence taylor was drafted the same year
I red in a Bill Walsh book that getting hit by Ronnie Lott was like getting hit over the head with a baseball bat, such was his intensity😮 Goat corner, H.O.F and multiple Super Bowl champion. Love the Patton story👏👏🇺🇲🏈
The ultimate pleasure is seeing my favorite offensive player getting hit by my favorite defensive player and showing why they're my favorite respectfully.
Awesome insight in the other side of Ronnie Lott. Watched on TV his fabulous football career with the 49ers ! Big 49ers fan! He gave it all he got on the football field. Kudos for fantastic podcast! Peace
Good football players know when to turn the switch on. As a father of 4 and one that played just collegiate football it's cool hearing his babies running the show. I salute this man that he could get on the field and turn the switch and still be the teddy bear, our babies need from a father, at home
I had two posters on my wall. Walter Payton and Ronnie Lott. What I admired most is that they left it all on the field. No shortcuts. No complaints. Pure love of the game.
As a Giants fan I have a ton of respect for Lott and the way he played. Those were epic battles with the Giants back in the day. He was awesome, and the hardest hitting safety I ever saw play.
I’ll never forget what I still think is the greatest hit ever. Christian okye was a huge power running back who once he got moving was like a tank. He played for KC and I was watching the game and okye goes up the middle and suddenly from the right side of the television screen I saw this blur and he hit okye and literally stopped him dead in his tracks and actually stood him up. The announcers went nuts and I couldn’t believe what I just saw. I mean okye was like 240 all muscle and and Lott just knocked the hell out of him.
I was never a Niners fan, but this dude was the Real Deal. Loved the way he played!
The goat 🐐 4real
Played basketball against him when I was 16 at Newark Memorial High School...his strength was unreal.
Ronnie Lott is the prototype defensive player. The man hit everyone like a force of nature, and he made the toughest opponents feel fear on a primal level. That icey stare of his would make a raging bull climb a tree and start meowing for help...lol

I knew Ronnie’s nanny for his kids and I got to meet him at 1999. great guy.
My favorite player of all time. The greatest to ever do it.
What excellent job Ronnie Lott's daughter did on the story!
What an excellent daughter she could've asked questions about a paper clip and it would be fascinating
@39:28 that mean mugging was too much, picture perfect
I hated the 49ers as kid but I loved Ronnie Lott!! There wasn’t to many receivers jumping for catches over the middle when playing Ronnie
I was gonna saw Weapons X was the hardest hitting safety ...but of course Lott gotta take the top spot
A one man highlights reel... Loved watching Big Ronnie Lott dish it out🔥🔥
HERE COMES THE TRUTH, I ENJOYED THAT SO MUCH...🏈 IT WAS A GREAT WAY TO SPEND SOME TIME 🏈
Greatness Amongst Us All
I believe Ronnie Lott took George C Scott's speech in Patton the movie a wee bit too serious. LOL
Ronnie Lott and Ed Reed the two greatest to play the safety position in NFL history.
Quote “Who is the best safety of all time?” “Who is the only payer in nfl history to end with less fingers than he started with? That’s all I have to say”
He isn’t just one of the best safeties ever, he is one of the best players ever.
You know it
I think Lott would struggle somewhat in the modern game because he simply lacked top end speed. Someone like LT had physical (6'3 240lb 4.6 speed) attributes in the 80s that would translate into the modern game seamlessly.
@@2011hwalker Top end speed? My guy, this is football not track and field. All you need is game speed.
@@duydo6924 hed get fined for every hit so he couldn't play lol
My favorite DB Of all time only reason why he did not win defensive rookie of the year With his 9 interceptions. It's because lawrence taylor was drafted the same year
The greatest Defensive back of all time!
Nope, Ed Reed is the greatest safety. Deion greatest corner. Deion greatest secondary player ever
@@lastshallbefirst5516I love Ed Reed a lot. But I still gotta go with Ronnie Lott
Night Train Lane, Jack Tatum, Darryl Green, Steve Atwater, should I go on?@@ejslemp5342
Ed reed was a system player if played for any other team than Baltimore he would have been a bust
This is so hard hitting on the field and so wholesale in the home 😅
Awesome insight in the other side of Ronnie Lott. Watched on TV his fabulous football career with the 49ers ! Big 49ers fan! He gave it all he got on the football field. Kudos for fantastic podcast! Peace
one of the greatest defensive players to touch the field, my uncle went to high school with him which is one of the reasons im a niner fan.
What an outstanding player!
Family had USC tix from 1968 to 1984, so as an early teen I got to c Lott play live. When Lott was a Raider, he single- handedly won 3 games for them
Good football players know when to turn the switch on. As a father of 4 and one that played just collegiate football it's cool hearing his babies running the show. I salute this man that he could get on the field and turn the switch and still be the teddy bear, our babies need from a father, at home
The best part about this video is his daughter, very beautiful too, doing much of the interview and narration.
I had two posters on my wall. Walter Payton and Ronnie Lott. What I admired most is that they left it all on the field. No shortcuts. No complaints. Pure love of the game.
Ronnie Lott!!!!!! Seeing your family is so incredible!!!!! God Bless!!!!
I’m glad I got to watch great players like Lott play before all the “targeting” calls of today.
He represents the heart of the sport as I've always felt about it. A matter of greatest respect.
I love the interaction with Lott and his daughter, cool
As a Giants fan I have a ton of respect for Lott and the way he played. Those were epic battles with the Giants back in the day. He was awesome, and the hardest hitting safety I ever saw play.
I hoping we have a rebirth of Ronnie Lott in DeMo that hit 🎯 on Swift gave me flashbacks!❤ RL the Best!
He breathes life into the Defense 😮
I’ll never forget what I still think is the greatest hit ever. Christian okye was a huge power running back who once he got moving was like a tank. He played for KC and I was watching the game and okye goes up the middle and suddenly from the right side of the television screen I saw this blur and he hit okye and literally stopped him dead in his tracks and actually stood him up. The announcers went nuts and I couldn’t believe what I just saw. I mean okye was like 240 all muscle and and Lott just knocked the hell out of him.
I remember that play,Okoye didn't come back into the game after that hit
