My take on using the SL2 as a Leica M alternative. Can it beat the M system at its own game? After years of using the Leica M10, M2 and Sony a7rii, find out if the Leica SL2 shares that secret sauce that digital M cameras are known for!

Definitely changed my opinion on all things leica and can totally see their value now. Also read the articles on your blog and they're incredibly helpful I can't thank you enough

Thanks for sharing and your info.
My experience with shooting with manual leica lenses with non M cameras: I do jobs on canon gear, however for my street photography, I use leica lenses mated to a fuji xt3.
A note on your underexposure to retain highlight: I found my workflow in fuji street photography one where I really try getting out of camera jpgs a priority to avert processing. Fuji film sims make it even more of a motivation in that if offers a finished subjective “look” in camera.
Shooting in NY’s tall building required hilight retention techniques due to the extremes in shadow by buildings, yet full sun. So underexposing images not only messed with photography workflow, but post processing as well. The worst was dark underexposed jpgs!
In comes fuji’s dr 400, an extended dynamic range. Bad news: minimum iso is 640, and you lose some shadow latitude. Good news: you shoot normal and retain hilight detail, and works in RAW!!!!
It works by making you increase the iso to 640 to allow your camera more room to process the amplification phase of the processing . It decreases the amplification of only the highlights of your image in order to protect them. Then it uses the selected iso of 640 to amplify the shadows (hence the more noise) as well as some of the midtones.
Basically the highlights are processed with a lower iso while the shadows and midtones are processed with a higher iso all in a single shot!!! No shutter limits.
This all happen before the image is sent to the analog to digital converter, hence why it works in raw!
This was a game changer with my street photography where i can be a photographer again and not a digital alchemist; where i had to change my photography (underexpose) my photos to circumvent digital sensor shortcomings… ending up with dark photos!
RUclipsr pal2tech demonstrates this beautifully and shows raws!

I use ten Leica M lenses on a Nikon z5 (which I purchased strictly to get entry to the matchless f/0.95 Noct lens). The results with the M lenses on a Novoflex adapter are mind blowing and I have to say shocked me. For 1200 bucks! I have seen no images posted from an M/SL2-S combo that match or exceed what I get with the z5. That said, I still want an SL2-S! :-)))

Do you have to recompose the photo when zooming in on the EVF to focus with the SL2 (or can you quickly select a zone to focus in on and then just shoot)? I have the M10P and love it, but my eyes are getting older and shallow depth of field is tougher to nail.

And yes, you can slap a monitor on top, but there are times when you want to shoot a b-roll without always dragging all the gear along, and having the flexibility and ergonomics to allow for that is priceless.
