That's what I have said that is the difference from the 2010's onward. Very specifically the 90's were INCREDIBLY ecclectic, you had from grunge, to R&B, to Hip-hop, to ballads, to alternative and THEY WERE ALL popular. The show was FULL of guests from musicians, to groups, to models, to actors, to athletes, to legends. It feels like MTV really had a wide target range, from say 15 to 35. I don't think it's MTV's fault to change the direction of what they offer...WE changed it, with the internet and the way we consume music.
Brian May talking about Wayne's World, how Freddie Mercury would've loved the amusing side of it and how Freddie would've loved that kids are discovering Queen because of the Wayne's World Bohemian Rhapsody scene warms my heart. Rest easy Freddie. 1946-1991. Timestamp where Brian May shows up is 18:34-19:15 in case you want to see Brian talking Freddie and Wayne's World.
Dude! I was at this awards show when I was seven years old. And I'm just watching this again realizing the crazy level of people I was in the same room as at a young age. I kinda forgot half of them. I've seen Mick Jagger with my own eyes?! I totally forgot.
Nice! I had this recorded on a vhs tape and watched it a zillion times. You saw that En Vogue performance live @ 7 years old? Who are your parents cuz they’re kinda rad 😆

Poor John..was on his way in a deep heroin nightmare 🙏🏻🎸 I'm glad he made out. I only likes a few songs from RHCP because of John's playing. He's an awesome musician.. guitar player.
Weird that Van Halen beat Nirvana and Red Hot Chili Peppers for video of the year. They're a great band but they were long past their peak by 1992. That was an award they would've deserved in like 1984/85.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure this was the last year when Viewers Choice/Video of the Year was 100% rock music. I think rock was still bigger than any other style through about 1996 but I think after 1992 it was clear that it was beginning to cede ground to other styles of music. Really from the 50's through 1992 (except briefly during the disco era) rock was the undisputed king.
It's not hip hop's fault. Rappers just filled a void that was left vacant after about 1996. Blame the rock industry for failing to promote the right bands to forge a huge new rock scene after the grunge bands faded/broke up, Metallica went lame, and Guns N Roses effectively broke up. Green Day was promising but didn't put out an adequate follow-up to Dookie for ten years, and No Doubt stopped making rock after Tragic Kingdom. Nu metal finally broke in 1999 but those 3 years of nothing but post-grunge nonsense and Load/Reload made rock really lose a lot of ground, and it was too little too late.

14:30 Is Dave Grohl smoking? Looks like he’s holding a cigarette and you can sort of see smoke in the upper part of the screen to Cobain’s right. If so, I’m sure Wilson Phillips and Boyz II Men didn’t appreciate 😁

Cuando Mtv premiaba a lo mejor de la música y no al mejor producto.
