For those on a tight budget , from the Tairoa Heads albatross colony carpark it is possible to see seals, sea lions , fairy and yellow eyed penguins and the odd albatross without going into the centre .

Hi, nice commentary on Dunedin. It's a pretty unique place. Down in front of the old university building is a small river, the Water of Leith, where you can actually (with a licence) go trout fishing, right in the middle of the city! There also places where you can see seals and even sealions on beaches and at the harbour entrance on the other side from the albatross colony (the only albatross colony on a mainland in the world) at Aramoana is a one and a half kilometre long mole, a man made structure to help keep the harbour free from silting. There's a carpark before a locked gate and you can take a nice walk right to the end of it and see seals, sea birds, and more great views.

I visited Dunedin on Saturday during Labour weekend. They have a Farmers market near the Dunedin Railway station in the morning. Really good pie and coffee. Have people selling gin, wine, lots of different variety of food and music.
Castle I felt it was overpriced and didn't have the time as it closes by 5 pm in Oct.
Port Chalmer lookout point is a pretty cool get a complete eagle eye view of the port, ships in the sea and surrounding areas.
If you are into wild life animals and birds then you will enjoy as it is good to hear, see, experience and ask questions to experts.
    Booked a Triple Crown Combo:
    1. Classic Royal Albatross tour - was worth the commentary in the background as we learnt about the bird and why it is unique to NZ. Not breeding season but saw quite a few albatross flying and some other spoon beak birds (don't remember the name).
    2. Monarch Wildlife Cruises - Same commentary as Albatross centre about the bird. And saw some blue eye penguins, seal.
    3. Penguin Conservation - Didn't get to see Yellow eye penguins as they are quite shy in their cave. Saw blue eye penguin just a hand distance away as they were hatching eggs in Oct.
Independent conservation effort with less funding from DOC. Makes sense supporting them.

I've heard the farmers market is amazing! We missed it on our last trip but great recommendation! Do you recall how much your triple combo tour was? Seeing penguins is something I'd really love to do in NZ.
I've heard Port Chalmers is quite lovely as well. Thank you for the comment!

Worth visiting and learning about yellow eye penguin as they have the largest breeding colony in Dunedin. They also have penguins rehabilitation centre and take care of them during moulting phase. Usually National Geography shows penguins hunt and live in colony and in groups but yellow eye penguin live in pair while mating and feeding their kid.

Great Brittany, two of your highlights where I grew up, Baldwin St we lived further down the valley and higher our St had to zigzag up hill to get up, Tunnel beach was our local playground for us kids from Corstorphine in the 60s, no track down then we had to sneak through the farmland.

Love your video, and so glad Dunners has grown on you! It's a beautiful 15min drive along the harbour to Port Chalmers (quaint little Port town) - stop at Careys Bay Pub for lunch or just get fish and chips from Port Fish Supply and carry on for another 10min to Aramoana and sit and eat them on the beach. There is an inner harbour beach, The Spit (a long extension out into the sea to stop the harbour filling up with sand again) that you can walk about a km out to the end and see seals and sometimes Orcas or Dolphins. If you go to the beach on the left hand side and walk down to the first big rock formation, there's an awesome sandhill that you can slide down (bought a sled for my daughter to do this when she was little). Brilliant day out! ❤

I've noticed a lot of no doggie hikes in NZ which is surprising since so many of them are quite remote! You'd think as long as they are on a lead it would be okay for the bird safety and such.

@@brittanymorgan09 I think that in most cases the biggest concern is the amount of 1080 poison that’s dropped onto many of these areas. Not sure how much you might know about 1080 but it’s used to kill any bird predators like possums, rats, etc. But it is also highly fatal for other animals and have read that it’s killed horses, cattle and other farm animals. Shocker for anyone new to NZ - but that’s just part of the protection of NZ native birds.

@brittanymorgan09 very lucky, but still looking forward to moving to your lovely country too! 😊 The problem with the castle is that it's privately owned and has pretty much been one family's entire lives and it's a money pit - it takes so much to keep it up to a good standard and there's always restoration work - but that makes for a very expensive entry fee, sadly. I'm loving working back in town, though (considering I used to have to drive right around the harbour to get to work - too long of a trip on a dodgy road on the peninsula!).
