We have always been here. However, the issue is that most people see the 10% in media that they believe represents the entire demographic. I tell people the reason you do not see the 90% is because we are working, raising families, paying our mortgages, and we do not have time for the nonsense.

I' m a doctor- when you do not fit people's expectation they get uncomfortable. If they are invested in black people as a caricature and do not see us as a diverse multitalented people with positive influences then we become a threat. I also know lots of excellent professionals and I agree- we are not going anywhere. They can not stop you so keep it moving my friend. I became a professor at 27 and I look very young. When I was walking across campus while in grad school someone approached me and asked if I needed help for freshman orientation. They thought I was 18.
I have had so many similar situations.
The most obvious was another young black female nursing student. I could see the hate on her face and the attitude in her voice from day one. She went off on my in one of the classes and said that I just taught them something wrong and that I needed to explain this to her. She mentioned that her theory professor taught her something else (most professors are white). As her lab professor, I remained calm and kindly corrected her by pulling up the information that her theory professor taught (I teach the same theory class also). She looked so foolish and ashamed that she left the class.
Usually it’s my white older students. Or administration when I go to ask for something and they tell me to ask my professor. I always have to respond, “I am the professor”

Lol! Well I saw a co-worker driving in my neighborhood and she almost broke her neck when she saw me. I didn't understand why. Our neighborhood is very diverse and she's an immigrant too (from an African country, I think it's Malawi). I just thought it was funny how even some immigrants think BP are just a bunch of hoodrats. Is it not acceptable that black people may want to pursue other professions? Are black lawyers or executive part of the problem? Sometimes it's our own community. I am a frugal shopper and I enjoy shopping at the Dollar Tree and the 99 cents store. Several years ago when entering a 99 cents store a woman was set up inside the store giving away free phones. She was black and saw that I was black and asked me if I wanted a phone. I told her no, thank you. She kept trying to get me to get it stressing how it was free and I could choose from a variety of phones. I explained to her that I didn't think I qualify for that program that gives free phones. I made too much money. Now without going into my situation I'll just say I was in the Air Force previously and I have a MBA. She gave me the nastiest look like I thought I was better than her. I don't think I'm better than anyone, I just knew I didn't qualify for that program that was for a lower income than what I had. Sometimes people without our own community judge us and expect us to have nothing. While we collectively say we want to see successful black people and have successful black leaders, do we recognize that everyone has a different story? Do we fall victim to our own bias of each other?

When I returned to the property early that evening, the contractors informed me of what happened. It was unwise and rude for her to walk into my property uninvited. Secondly, she could have encountered danger by just walking in. I knocked on her door, introduced myself as her neighbor from across the street and the owner of the duplex property. I told her what the contractors told me she did earlier in the day. And, I told her to never enter my property without permission again or I will call the police on her. I also told her to never inquire with any serviceman, contractor or anyone performing work or providing a service at my property about the status of their work nor my property. I told her that in the future if she is curious about anything related to my property, that she is to ask me and only me and I will determine if I feel compelled to inform her.

Of course we are black, we don't age. We have rhythm. Highly educated with/without a degree, we drive nice cars (expect me, i drive a beater, b/c i refuse to have a car payment, etc...), and we're unapologetically black. i don't know what else to say, but we here. 🤙🏾

When you go to their side of twitter it's pathetic, crying how they're discriminated against nowadays...playing victim but accusing black people all along of playing victim

My white neighbors once told my husband that we were different. Lol. "Diiferent" meant not like other black people.🤣🤣. We didn't know if that was a compliment or insult. 😅😅. My daughter talks very soft and proper grammer, so people always tell her she talk like a white women. We still dont understand this one. Somebody told me that I think I am better than them because I spoke in a calm voice. I tell you people are Koo Koo this days.

I was asking my dentist questions about my X-rays. The hygienist seemed exasperated that I was "asking questions" and believed she needed to step so I would be quiet. I thanked her for her answers, and proceeded to say, "You have to excuse me. The professor in me always has questions." Both with their mouths agape, "You're a professor?!"

Black folk been working to get educated, establish businesses, ascending as professionals. Proud that my parents and in-laws paid the price to help my hubby and I go to college and we have done our part to support our sons. My older son is now an officer in the Coast Guard and my younger so is a college junior majoring in art. The majority of my friends have this scenario. African Americans/Black folks are a great people! And I hope we can help those in our community who can use a helping hand in their growth and prosperity.
