The PRS Kingfisher SE is a modern-style bass that packs an impressive arsenal of tones. Featuring a lightweight ash body, a stable five-ply maple/walnut neck and a set of pickups full of punch and articulation, commanding sound at a reasonable price, the PRS Kingfisher SE is quite the low-end instrument. Dan Veall tells us more.

Man I'm shocked how fantastic that tone is. I'm a Warwick Thumb guy, but for a reasonably priced bass that tone is pretty great.
same. I have a thumb but I am looking at one of these because I am a HUGE PRS fan. This sounds great!
Just bought one off these for 450.00 from Reverb website. October 2020. This bass is flawless in guitar build quality. And it looks absolutely stunning. The bass I received looked to be brand new. Not a single mark on it. Not even micro scratches. I have no idea why they are putting it as "good condition" on a Mint condition bass guitar. Maybe I just got lucky.
I tested the volume pots with a multi meter and they are garbage as far as I can tell. Im new to the electronics world and used the internet to teach me how to test them. They do not make a smooth ramp up to full volume. I could turn the volume pot and when it reached about 90% it FINALLY would start increasing the volume. I have seen this complaint quite a bit all over the internet forums. Also that the pickups had very low output when I was playing compared to my Ibanez Musician in passive mode. I was thinking just a volume pot replacement might fix that.
I went into this adventure fully knowing I was putting in EMGs regardless.... So this is what I did... I strung it with D'Addario Pro Steels EPS160 Medium Gauge. I ended up buying a new set of active EMG pickups for it that included the volume and tone pots. The added 9 volt battery fits in the back electronics compartment with ease. I put a (35DC) Humbucker in the neck position and a (35J) jazz bass single coil in the bridge area. I got the Tom Araya signature set. The sound I am getting now in very clean clear and loud through my Trace amp and Fender 410. Blending in the Jazz bass pickup with the Humbucker gives a phenomenal low punchy vibrant tone. I am just getting back into bass so my review on sound characteristics is not that great. I can say it sounds a hell of a lot better than what came out of there. I was getting some real whinny sounds on the D string with the old pickups. I dont know if it was the pots or a combination but that is no more. I cant say enough about this bass guitar now. It is just perfect now in my opinion. I have zero complaints except that nasty SE logo on the head stock. Mine has a differnt logo than the one reviewed here. The bass arrived with super low action and perfect intonation. I raised the action a small amount and she plays like a dream now. I am extremely happy with this bass. Total price 650.00 USD plus Tax. 450 for the bass and 200.00 for the pups and solder-less wiring harness.
How did the EMG 35 pickups fit, compared to the stock PRS pickups? Are they the same size? Are there gaps now, or did you have to route-out the pickup holes?
@@frenziedminds they fit perfect. Same size like they were made for it. Go to website called talkbass and look up my posts about this bass. I took pics also. My name is Rick_bass on that forum.
My bass is the dark stain tortoise color. Deep dark mahogany red.
I have one, it is before they went to the new logo on the headstock. Got a smoking deal on it due to this, sounds good to me. Don't understand the comments on the pickups or ability to play. They seem to play just as well as anything I have played. I really like mine.
Read my comments about the pickups.
Another really good, thorough review, thank you!
Just ordered myself one of these in tortoiseshell brown. Really excited to play this
I mentioned perhaps a 5 string also, they said maybe someday!
I wanted a Rickenbacher clone but now I'm thinking PRS.
Amazing tone …. & demonstration 😊🙏
Its a nice bass. I have one. But the pickups are garbage. They are really single coils, very weak. I hurried up and changed to Seymour dunkin bass lines. What a difference !!!!
amazing stuff
I bought a Red Kingfisher bass 2 years ago. It’s well built and looks beautiful.
“But”, I’m Not impressed with the way it plays or sounds. The humbucker pickups. Don’t sound good. Not like my Fender Jazz Bass does.
Is there a replacement pick up that’s better sounding. And Is it worth it to have the frets leveled and recround?
I bought a PRS SE Kingfisher Bass Dec 2019. Had it set up to my playing style. Its a little difficult to play. And I don't like the sound of the pick ups either. When I play only the neck pick up. I have to turn the tone All the way off. Or it makes a clicking sound. Terrible>I love the way its built and looks very nice. Unfortunately, it doesn't play as good as it looks.Looking at selling it. And Gonna try out the Lakland Skyline 44-02 Deluxe Cherry Sunburst
do you still have it?
Whats the differece between stringing through the body as opposed conventional stringing way?
Some people believe it to have a better resonance and sustain.
it is just preference
Warwick tone mate.
👦💖
All you get is a twangy tone. No depth, no body, no richness etc. Even through RUclips, basses like Cort and Sire will outgun this bass with ease. That's a fact. The Cort A6 Plus FMMF is cheaper, comes with 6 strings and has a better tone for sure.
Reviewers need to be more frank. Be like the car reviewers. Not just selling fluff only.
Those are *not* true humbuckers, which is why the pickups are so weak.
A guitarrist can't do a bass Review....
Whats with the seriously over blown reverb? Completely made what looked like a good review utterly pointless.
almost no one plays with a pick nowadays :-P
You don't have a fucking CLUE WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT SON.
