This seems to be testing the ability to understand inferred meaning rather than everyday speech. Very useful in academic comprehension because they tend to write poorly in a verbose manner about difficult concepts but damn.. thats difficult.

Instead of having them go around matching keys to locks (memorization to solve existing problems), we should be handing them a single lock with no key and teaching them ways to open it (understanding to solve novel problems).
"It's not really testing how smart you are, it's just testing how you fit the system" Period. Girlie probably doesn't even know much about Korea and yet she described the whole country in one sentence.
@@omeraydindev Its same in English speaking countries too bro. The U.S. public school system is standardized test determined, it's just not as hard and people still drop 5k on tutoring for their kids to do well on the SAT or ACT.
I don't know if people in the west are dumber or what. The Korean SAT is a perfect exam for a highschool student (barring the time constraint, but a 15% increase would make it perfect). All the concepts required for the test are a prerequisite for a college student and that way they won't waste a semester in college polishing their prerequisites. All those who are doubtful about the speaking skills of Koreans, let me tell you that korea is a highly homogeneous country and nobody actually needs to speak English to survive, but they still learn it to make themselves relevant to the global world. All they lack is practice in actually speaking it.
Honestly, no tests measure smartness in my opinion. It's really about how well you prepared for it. I go to a school that's very competitive in sciences and I've seen really smart people not do well on tests because they didn't prepare properly

My girlfriend who is Korean often asks me to check her writing when she has to write an email in English. I find she writes in an convoluted way, often incorrectly using pedantic words you'd only hear in academia and not in the real world. Now I'm thinking this is probably why.
I have the same problem when my Thai friends ask me to check their work... they structure a lot of things like an essay too, even if it’s something informal.
But, Your words like 'convoluted', 'pedantic' are also seen academic to me.(Korean) We can't easily classify which words are academic or not. Only recently, I heard English in Korean exam are academic by RUclips or something. In addition, I am not confident of what I'm saying. and maybe, that's the thing most of Koreans experienced. That makes wrong exam continues.
Noah Jung I think the easiest way to explain this is formal and informal. In English we adjust our word terms to fit the situation. In email or casual conversation we use simple terms. Only in report then we use more complicated terms. The easiest way to sound less “academic” is to writer in simple, and shorter sentences. To speak as plainly as possible. I agreed convoluted and pedantic actually rarely used irl either, but needed to be said here because simpler terms doesn’t exist (I don’t think).
@@noahjung2597 that's a good point. When an advanced level of English is taught, I think there should be more focus on grammar and sentence structure, rather than academic style writing. Being able to write clearly, concisely and to-the-point is more important when applying for jobs, writing CV's etc, than knowing words like "moreover" and "henceforth"
"This seems tailored to one certain type of person. It's not really testing how smart you are, it's just testing how you fit the system." That's the point.. sad but true.
The reason they make this exam so hard is because the scores determines the grade of each student, which determines which university they can go to. The top grade is consumed of only ~4% of all test takers and are the cream of the crop, they are able to go to the most prestigious universities. So for example if many students were able to get high scores on this exam then there would be chaos in students applying for the top universities with only low passing rates. So it's not like each test-taker is being tested for their own individual intelligence, but they are being tested on how much better they are compared to the other test-takers in the nation.
True. While the tests in its purest form do test someone's knowlege, not intelligence, But if you think about it, being smart alone will not pull someone out from poverty without knowledge.especially in a very fucked up capitalism like south korea where a few people has a chokehold on resources. The system values numbers. And numbers indicate that the system values knowledge more than smart. You just have to be smart enough to utilize your knowledge to keep the system going. The SAT has evolved into something brutal in korea and china. It has become a test that makes students compete against each other for good universities. This also reflects the west in their SAT. If you didn't graduate from a prestigious university, with more and more percentage of the people are getting college educated, employers will resort to filter applicants to only receive those coming from the more prestigious universities. . While the system is hard to beat, this is where smart people are needed. In tge US, you can see it. People from the tech industry in the past 50 years broke away from the system. . But in Korea, smart people are being shoved in the system by the powerful people. They can't fight back at all. That's why there's barely any start up companies in Korea.
@Vincent Valentine they make you work hard for sure but not necessarily think harder. I guess you have more general knowledge and work strength but life's about abstract thinking and creative solution-finding. there is no right or wrong system I guess, but both have strong and weak points for sure. I'm happy with the education I received and wouldn't trade it for any "high league" university in Korea.
Pretty simple really. English has lots of words for the concept that ignorance refers to. 'Ignorance' is one of the most formal of these and in general in the UK people use the less formal words in day to day life, only encountering the more formal versions occasionally in formal settings. Even then there are usually several more formal words that could be used in such settings so you may not encounter one of them. English is a language with hundreds of thousands of words, but only a few thousand of those make up the majority of words spoken each day in the UK. For foreigners trying to understand which words are more formal and which less formal to express a particular thing, in general the more formal variants are derived from Latin or Greek, whilst the less formal are more likely derived from Germanic or Norse roots.

It's not surprising that people who speak English as a first language would find the Korean English exam tough. The questions are convoluted and very long winded. While it is grammatically correct, it's very poorly phrased. No one writes like that...newspaper articles aren't even phrased like that.
I think you'd realise after some time that it's not so much an English test, meant to help students at all in speaking English, as it is a test to see how well you infer meanings and clues within the text to help you. Probably with a life surrounded by academic papers and journals in mind. In my opinion, the skill set the students develop preparing for this test are probably not the most important skill set you want to cultivate in a whole student body. There are other skills and qualities more important for life in society that these students miss out on by the obsessive studying you'd be expected to do.
Korean schools and colleges doesn't have any objective to teach English to the students. If a Korean is speaking good english, then it will be of his/her own effort and not bcs of education system. Exams in Korea will be difficult bcs most of them are pressured by parents and sometimes themselves to get into popular Universities like SNU. Which has made exams very difficult bcs of high demand...
The thing is people do write like that... Researchers, scientists, philosophers and the like. So I think that instead of teaching the students how to speak English, they are teaching them how to write research papers or how to structure their sentences and words like a professional. They are preparing them for a professional scenario, not to talk casually with people. I guess at the age the students do these exams they expect them to already know English pretty well, so they take it further and teach them (or expect them to know) how English is used in a more professional setting.

I totally disagree. Though the exam seems a bit irrelevant of students' on the surface, in a super-competitive society like South Korea, it is actually a must for the exams to be difficult enough to sort out which students are really the smartest by making the exams super hard. And though it certainly has some drawbacks, it is Korea's 'education fever' that has made Korea the 11th or 12th biggest economy in the world within just several decades literally from the rubble of the Korean War. As someone who works in a Korean high school let me just explain. Korean students don't really learn how to speak and understand English. What they learn is actually just memorising paragraphs and basically just spotting the difference between what they've memorised (which is correct) and what is on their test. They don't actually understand what is being said, they rarely do. They just spot grammar mistakes mainly. They're not learning English they're just learning how to memorise and it is so fucking stupid myself and other native English teachers cannot stand to English education system in Korea at all. My high school students can barely tell me why they like a movie if I ask them and they've been studying English since they were 8 or 9. They're now 15-17 and have no idea how to actually have a small conversation in English it's infuriating. I hope one day the Korean education system changes so that the English they study actually becomes useful to the students in some way rather than hindering them and causing them so much stress.
I am an ordinary college student who has been through this curriculum in Korea. To sum up briefly, there are two issues here. First, This exam is “the Scholastic Ability Test”. So many academic terms are used. Second, there’s a sort of ‘unfairness issue’ in this test. To many students in my country, this exam is the most important test. If exam sentences are given in everyday English, students who have studied abroad since childhood have a great advantage. (Rich people can go abroad without financial strain.) in addition to what appears to be superficial, there are many social and cultural problems involved in here. I think there's one thing―exactly “things”―you're mistaken about, in fact many high-scoring students understand what the contents mean exactly, not just memorizing.
The issue you pointed out here might be true to some extent, for some schools and students, but to say that the whole English education system is based on memorizing and nothing else is surely not true and over exaggeration of the matter.
@@kolviczd6885 considering that I speak with people across the country on a daily basis (all of us NETs and the majority of us high school teachers) I can confidently say it is the majority of the country with this problem. Another problem I didn't already mention is the fact that we are not allowed to fail students. I had a student who didn't do their english project (a 1 minute presentation on a job they would like - something I learned in my 2nd year studying a foreign language in school) worth 50% of their final grade and refused to do their 1 on 1 oral exam with me worth the other 50% and I was no allowed to give him 0 marks even though it's what he deserved for literally doing nothing. And that problem is also across the board from what I've seen and what I've heard. How can the Korean government brag about the education system and how the country is so educated when it is like this? Of course if you're letting everybody pass with minimum effort the scores will always be good. As with most of South Korea, it's all about keeping face rather than actually benefiting the students. And don't get me wrong I love the country I have enjoyed living here but the education system NEEDS to change. Seriously.
@@하하호호-y5h the unfairness issue doesn't change though. Because even rich students who don't go abroad can still pay a lot of money to go to 학원s and get private tutoring specifically tailored to the 수능 so they're still getting the advantage because they are wealthy and I have seen exactly that problem in my own school. The high scoring students are usually (not always but mostly) the students who can afford private tutoring in a 학원. I also know someone who has been through the korean education system and is about to start her masters degree and she admitted herself the only reason she did well in school was because her parents had the money to give her a better education than most of her classmates. Which only brings us to further issues regarding students poor health due to spending hours after school in further education and then studying until the very early morning which I have also seen with my own eyes.

True, there are different types of intelligence. Everyone is different. Unfortunately, schools often only emphasize "textbook smarts" and want their students to fit a certain formula. In today's world, I think having "soft skills"/being able to communicate with others is far more important and can get you further in life. So students who think they've "failed" just because they didn't get good marks on these technical exams or didn't get into the best universities should not feel discouraged. IQ is but a small part of intelligence. Indeed the utility of general intelligence is sometimes understated, but always highly appreciated, even if people don't quite know when it is prevailing. IQ, measuring soft intelligence, has increased over the centuries, but anthropological data suggests that general intelligence (by reference to the markers) has decreased markedly, at least in the West.

I wanna see korean students take a gcse english exam or something to see how they would react in an actual English exam taken by English native speakers
They'll suffer heavily. Korean students rely immensely on multiple choice styles and therefore will find writing essay a huge challenge. Most of my korean mates who came over to the UK as overseas students didnt even know how to write an independent essay, let alone structure one.
Not sure about gcse but as a korean who took the SAT and ACT, they were fairly simple, especially the math was middle school level at best. However what was difficult was the college essay. To be honest, I didn't have a dream other than getting into a 'good' college(mind you good college was just name value, I wasn't even sure what major I wanted to be in). I'm the university student in Korea, and in my opinion the english test in KSAT really did helped me to "read" academic papers in english, but not to "write". Actually the biggest part that KSAT overlooked is that the test is concentrated only to evaluate the reading skill, not the most important parts in learning foreign language - speaking and listening. English test in KSAT really helps students to read english papers, but not to make a conservation with english speakers.
"English" as a spoken language is pretty broad, since all the english-speaking countries, have their own culture/idioms/dialects/slang, not to mention different generational gaps (younger/older)
I have noticed this a lot with Korean students enrolling in Canadian schools. Reading skills are high but speaking and listening skills are lower. Speed is always prioritized too, which isn't always the best strategy in my opinion.
I really liked this episode. I'm glad British youngsters were on the point with what's really important, not just amused with the ridiculousness of the test questions. I grew up in America and when I noticed what kind of words you had to study for TOEFL, my immediate reaction was "What for?" Being able to answer a question with words that English speakers don't speak doesn't really test anything other than the fact that you are a good test taker.
its clearly not for casual communication setting. The question are mostly on professional setting, texts you stumble on scholar paper/data findings/dissertation/graphs findings etc. Personally it helps me a lot with my degrees and work now. If my purpose is to converse then we should certainly look at the speaking/listening test not comprehension test.
"I AM HUNGRY" This means in korea "A condition that usually leads to the desire to eat, as the most basic and essential physiological phenomenon of man."

I'm a university student in Japan, and I would say the university entrance exams are similar to the ones in Korea. The reason why the English exams are like this is because the entrance exams are very competitive (usually an exam is the only factor that determines your acceptance) and the English exams have to be tremendously hard or else everyone would get good marks. Therefore Japanese students study English by remembering the elements of English grammar and trying to decipher horrifically complicated English sentences. That's why many grown-ups start going to English conversation classes after realizing they don't have the English skills to negotiate or even to simply communicate with foreign clients - which is ironic considering the vast amount of time they spent studying English when they were students. There should be at least one class a week that focuses on English conversation, but the reality is that the tests are so competitive and students are so focused on studying for the exams that they don't have time to do anything "irrelevant" to the exams, even to obtain the skills needed for simple English communication. It's sad.
That's retarded. Especially when you realise that most of the students probably aren't applying for an English degree. An engineering student doesn't need to know about anything as esoteric as the pluperfect tense for example. Creating one English test for multiple faculties or degrees is the most negligent thing I think I've heard of today.
@@mumble3535 I think you misunderstood me (I'm sorry if I wasn't clear enough); I meant that the only factor that determines your acceptance to a university is a test (so things like your high school grades or what you did in high school don't matter). Different universities and each of their faculties generally have different tests for all of the subjects in accordance with what is required to enter the faculty; for example, a student who wants to learn engineering would definitely have an easier English test than a student who wants to study English as their major in university.
The philippine entrance exams aren't quite as brutal but it's standard for all degrees you're going to take, much like the American sats, they want well rounded students i guess

As a native speaker, the questions weren't that hard actually, but they were definitely needlessly convoluted to the point that it actually got in the way of comprehension. These questions seemed to be written to purposely make people fail rather than test actual comprehension...
wouldn't be much of a test for comprehension if it was just a single sentence now would it (they said these were the harder questions)

@@AT-lp8qg that's about it, although we don't have the concept of formal and informal like you do in Korean.
@@crossref233 thanks for that, it made more sense now. Still I'm sad of this system.

How does a native speaker only recently finds out what 'ignorance' means?!
I just love the irony. She was ignorant of the definition of ignorance.
@@melodyfussell829 lol my thoughts exactly
I think she's joking!
Probably checked the dictionary.

Wow thanks for the information
I didn't know it was this bad

I'm a Korean student who took national college entrance exam last year.
First of all, thank you for making a such a good video. The words were very heart moving and it let me know the differences of the teenagers life through countries. It was funny to see the reactions haha😆
I love the words in the video, "It's not really testing how smart you are, it's just testing how you fit the system." I'm pretty sad to hear it but....I can't deny it...
I hope all the Korean students know that we are just worth it as we are.
Let's have some bananas before the exam~!!😁
Since I've heard that a lot of koreon students are too stressed out and depressed, like is it really worth it when they pass the exams? Why does it seem most people in sk strive really high to the point where it's done unhappily and completely ruins their mental health? I'm just curious by the way and I really love koreon culture but I'm not sure why most are obsessed with perfection?
How did it go?
@@sammy5267 I even saw a video where a student was asked what he wanted to pursue after the test but he said he doesn't know yet since his main goal is to pass the exams. I mean, Japan has a large number of suicide deaths every year and Korean teens are becoming depressed with exams at the same time the countries i mentioned are first world countries. Their country is so developed and i think that's a reason why education is taken seriously there.
I live in a Southeast Asian country and our education sucks big time, we don't have any big tests like this (except when taking a bachelor's degree or boards) but as a result of that, our country isn't as developed as East Asian ones. I applaud and aspire Korea for their economy and ability to fend for themselves after the war but i don't think I'd survive High School in their country.
in Pakistan we also go through same pressure n difficult test and end up in being empty mind so don't worry korean students i feel u i have gone through the same when i had my SAT exam so don't worry korean students we are with you n yeah fighting !!
@@sammy5267 In a lot of Asian countries, like South Korea, the university you're admitted to basically determines your social status and future. If you're admitted to SKY, then you're set up for life. It's quite tragic, honestly, that students are being subjected to such a tense and highly competitive environment that it ruins their mental health. However, the job market in South Korea is highly competitive as well, and having good educational background is an edge. Nowadays though, most companies prefer those with experience so even being a fresh graduate from one of the top universities doesn't guarantee being hired to the best companies.

As a Korean High school student, I feel like even though they got most of the questions wrong, they are much more mature than the average students here in Korea. We should be like you... And that "They don't really test how smart you are but how you fit in the system" was heavy!! Skills to get the questions right even when you don't understand the text do exist!
Like one of the girls said, there is so much more to you, so much more you can do and have to offer to society than what these tests suggest. Life is not defined by test scores.

3. Most schools take exam day as a discretionary day off. I teach at a middle school in Korea and we get exam day off every year.

When they asked me questions about where do i see myself 10 years down the line...I had an answer but i couldn't compose anything with detail.
@@jspright5226 It really varies on what education they receive in Korea. I taught Korean middle schoolers for a year. I taught writing classes and parliamentary debate. Some of those kids could write and debate way better than undergrad students I tutored in the states.

Im with you 굉장히 공감합니다 같은 대학생으로서..
"English" as a spoken language is pretty broad, since all the english-speaking countries, have their own culture/idioms/dialects/slang, not to mention different generational gaps (younger/older)
I agree definitely. That's the reason why most of Koreans are not used to speaking English despite pretty good at reading and write.

You are really correct zzzz
It's sad.
So true...
Exactly....
The philippine entrance exams aren't quite as brutal but it's standard for all degrees you're going to take, much like the American sats, they want well rounded students i guess

I'm an Indian too and I can confirm this. I've been preparing for almost a year now for UPSC examination and it may as well be harder than this. English is my second language and I thought that it was pretty easy until I started my coaching classes😣😣😣
@Gargee Basak all top tier colleges...NLUs, IIMs, Narsee Monjee, Symbiosis, Christ
I’ve gone to school in India and I’m literally only in high school rn but I got all the answers right. Granted, I took more than a min per ques but these are very similar to SAT ques and the exams I take in school....lowkey my English class is harder lol
Gargee Basak is it a top tier college though if you can’t even write coherent English?

if we wrote like this in english class im sure our teachers would minus points. it just sounds incredibly redundant and excessive. you're doing yourself a disservice because a lot of the questions just run around in a circle for three sentences and fail to just get to the point. there is advanced speaking, but a lot of the added phrases were really unnecessary and if anyone spoke like this in real life, I'm sure no one would stick around to hear the end of it haha.
Right, even in an actual essay or thesis writing, our prof would always remind us to just get to the point and don't dance around the same idea just to make our paper look longer and 'smarter' lmao

In that case, the test makes sense. But as a non-korean, I think it would be important to fully understand the basic first, such as sentences and conversing - then the academic.
Yoongi infires me 이말도 맞지 ㅇㅇ

The hard part is reading it but not actually trying to understand the words. If I were to do that, I would read it, get overwhelmed and have to read it again but actually concentrating
The English part was way too convoluted. It’s fine to have a long passage, but one passage should have multiple questions rather than one question each. The language used in the passages made sense but felt very much like a university or published research papers. That’s rough. Good luck to all Koreans
Much like? More like 'yes, they actually do.'. They actually use the passages that is used in university research papers.
And very wordy... For no reason... That's what I was taught to CORRECT in English Language classes...
And I'm out here trying to figure out what convoluted means-
@@dais9446 There is actually a reason for it. People in academia use a lot of jargon because they need to be very specific with what they mean. Of course, it's definitely a bit ridiculous for timed tests like these.
