    Hello Tony , what a wonderfull job ..........
    About the cap close to the resistor ......you could mount it on the other side of the board , I sometimes do that in my ( mostly tube ) amplifiers.
    Kind regards

    Once again, great video! You could mount the resistor that still heats up quite a bit on the other side of the board. There is enough room to do that. And this way it is separated from the cap by the PCB.

    Hello. Love all the all the content keep it going I'm learning a lot in each rant... Sense you're on the SX-1280 tuner subject, can you cover something on what could cause the "FM muting, Stereo light, and the station centering meter to lean all the way left." In my case the tuner works with the FM muting off, the signal strength meter works well all the switches are clean. This is just a hobby for me as well. Thank you for all the mentoring!

    From long experince and you're using Vishays AC05 resistor with flameproof coating they will last forever and so will that cap most certainly since resistor is placed above it and we know heat moves upwards...different if resistor have been placed underneath that cap. I do same mounting myself and raise resistors from the boards using either own "kinking" or teflontubing. And btw about the caps, i do prefer the FG, KZ or caps then the KL or the others from Nichicon in this amp.. But as you may know now Nichicon and Elna have stopped manufacturing all Audio caps. Perhaps some KW will still be made but thats it i think. i Have bulked up so worries for awhile. If you would have recapped the whole amp with say Nichicon HE, HW or other 105 caps amps can actually sound pretty harsh and i have many customers (friends...) who have basically complained a lot about this when i have done test without them knowing what caps i've put in. Almost a standard 85 cap is preffered (more rolled off in treble) So yes sometimes there been a double recap for testing purposes and they all really like the FG caps (more mellow / boing than say KZ or Elna Silmic)
    Anyway big thanks from Finland or your great videos!

    since your shop is clearly in the basement and you do not live in the "balmy south" hearing any very low level sound over the background sound of what is probably the heating equipment very difficult. It is not a problem really listening through youtube processing squashes many subtilties . The new amp analyzer is a marvel I envy you.

  • @denbo1064
    @denbo1064 10 месяцев назад

    That high sensitivity ‘RMS Volts’ on the PA81 was very intriguing. Would be interesting to see how other amps and receivers perform on this. While, as you point out, it is completely inaudible, I believe this would still show how low the overall noise floor is of a given amp and consequently might have some bearing on the sound - especially if one were using super high efficient horn-type speakers, etc.

    Lol, the audiophile joke was great. There is the part of the audio community that will spend $1000 on a $5 per foot power wire.😂 and say it sounds better🙄.But if you have money to burn, sure.That being said, something like the skin affects they will argue about😂😢. skin effects come in at higher frequency but not in the audio range. Let's face size cables to carry the proper current, and you are golden. Great video, Tony. The amplifier is beautiful.

    • @fernarias
      @fernarias 10 месяцев назад +1

      They spend that on copper wire that doesn't exist. I can't find any manufacturer that makes 99.99% pure copper. I also know that 99% pure copper (copper is mixed with silver usually) has the lowest resistance.

    • @Amplified208
      @Amplified208 10 месяцев назад

      @fernarias No, you are right, and for good reason, copper and silver (cu-Ag) is a great combination.. silver is the most conductive and high thermal characteristic, but a dense metal. Copper on its own is very hard to manufacture on its own sense it cools very quickly. Adding impurities like silver help make it more malleability and workability and corrosion resistant and some other reasons. Point being is you don't see space x spending a $1000 for 3' of 12awg ofc copper wire. Well, maybe if it's made of pure gold 🤣 .

    With those replacement boards the distortion went so low that the warmth of the sound of the intention of elation of the original bands is now lost. Replacing it back with period-correct components will open up the stage and make it seem that the band is really plaing in your room. With the new replacement board, I could distinctly hear from my laptop speakers that the sound has an unintended directionality to it.

      I heard exactly that on my $9 PC speakers too, I honestly think that you should have more repect for us 'Golden Eared' audiophiles, we have a gift that is beyond the comprehension of ordinary people, Tony. Don't get me wrong, I do like your channel, but I fear sometimes, the quest for technical perfection gets in the way of the music. :)

    Hi Tony - I have theoretical question about the overall functioning of a directly coupled amp.
    if I connect the 2 inputs of differential amp together (input1 = input 2) set amp input to zero - I assume that the amp's output should also be zero and the amp should remain fully balanced - right?
    by balanced I mean that for example - the currents in the 2 branches of diff amp should the same - provided the 2 transistors are exactly the same - right?
    I have had marantz 510 on the bench for years now (many years) and the 2 branches are out of balance - about 50% more current in one branch - transistor are matched.
    As you discussed the diff amp in this Pioneer - I thought I asked my question - I hope you don't mind.
    or maybe some else can also comment 😀

    thanks for your thoughts on the low leakage caps tony. from my reading, i have come to the same conclusion as you but i have not been repairing vintage audio very long so i tend to stay in my lane. i have plenty of UKL so i use them. your power output coincides with the 2 1280s that i did. i got 240wpc before clipping altho i can not remember the distortion numbers. at 4ohm, i was still pulling strong at 300wpc and i shut it down so i wouldn't smoke my dummy load. curious as to what you test at 4ohm.

    Idk why you rant about audiofiles, if it weren't for them who else would buy all those 1000$/meter of power cables, various "interconnects" worth their weight in gold, phono stands worth their weight in palladium and little cubes and pyramids that can fix the acoustics of any room, even a tiled bathroom, by placing a few at strategic spots.
