Alright, i don't normally do this, but, Paul deserves recognition. Im a painter by trade. I do very little mud and tape work. Mostly small repairs. However, i am expanding my business and had a lengthy drywall project. Paul has given a tip in other videos about lifting the blade on oneside, to avoid a ridge. I mud maybe 4 times a year. I usually sub that out. Im just not fast and proficient so im reluctant. However, this last job, i took notes from pauls videos and put them to practical use. I was like a kid with a new toy. I kept looking at the walls at how damn smooth they were. THANK YOU PAUL. If you listen to what he says, and most importantly TAKE YOUR TIME, the result will be awesome. I wear headphones when i paint and prep, i put one of his videos on and it was almost like i was working beside him. Paul, i owe you a beer or something!!
I’m a 65 yr old woman and these videos helped me put a skim coat on a cement wall that had peeling paint, and cracks! I peeled off as much of the paint that I could and sanded lightly where paint and cement met ! I skim coated the wall twice and then painted it! I felt mighty proud of myself!! These videos really helped…, thanks so much, Paul!
Paul's the MAN! My wife and I have renovated our entire condo using Paul's advice for drywall and mudding techniques. We keep a huge roll of Fiba-Fuse in the closet because that stuff just makes patching holes and joints a breeze. I've textured my ceiling, fixed a whole bunch of failing tape joints, drywalled my entire garage from scratch, covered up unused outlets, and all sorts of other stuff. I honestly will never have to hire a drywaller for the rest of my life. Paul's videos have given my wife and I a life skill that we'll use forever! Thank you, PAUL!!!!
Covering up unused outlets😮??? Thats against electrical code. Unused outlets may be removed (the receptacle & wires capped with wire nuts) & covered with a screw on plate But must always remain accessible & never ever hidden behind drywall. That's an Electrical FIRE HAZARD!
Avid DIY and hate this job but constantly find myself needing to do it, your videos are great between and another RUclipsrs have helped tremendously. I am perfectionist and after listening/watching you I finally found the secret to a fairly quick smooth wall. More often than not walls are uneven so I use all purpose heavy to get wall near level then I use a slightly watery super thin top coats for final finish. The watery finish lets me smooth out real nice and as you said I finally learned to not go crazy trying to get it perfect. When i get to last coat any imperfection will sand smooth real nice, if blade leaves a trailing line i always tried get rid of ending up causing more problems so leaving then doing a light sand gives me excellent finish walls. Lastly, I keep wet rag with me and clean the blade before doing my final skim. I couldn’t have gotten to where I am without videos like this!
Great videos for skim coating. They help me complete my first drywall level 5 finish in my new kitchen. I passed along the skim coat over texture/popcorn ceiling to my aunt. Thank you for sharing your skill and knowledge.
Paul, you'd be proud I think, I've been learning a lot about taping from your vids and my buddy Aaron (who also watches you), I have a lot of taping ahead of me. After the studio is complete I'm going to be doing the entire house. Thanks so much for your expertise. Man the results from our taping is beautiful, totally pro.
Thanks for the tips been running a Painting and Drywall repair company for over 22 years .Still humble enough to be teachable. I use a lot 5 min quick set /knockdown texture orange peel is the most common in central Texas.
Just subscribed to your channel. Thanks for putting all this on RUclips! I’ve painted for 5-6 years now, but I always steer clear of taping and mudding. After I botched a job for a friend (we had a blast trying to learn, and he owns the house so it didn’t matter if we screwed it up) I always found someone else to handle the drywall work since I couldn’t find a teacher. I’ve got a shed now I can practice in, and your channel is STACKED with lessons. Seriously, thanks a bunch.
Paul im 145 years old and with your help i was able to skim coat my walls and from the bottom of my soul i say thank you in lord master jesus name amen lordy lordy
I'm from NZ and I'm about to do a skim coat job. The way explain everything is so simple and straight forward. I can't wait to use some of your tips you've shown. I watch videos all the time to up my Plastering skills an knowledge. Keep it coming bro. Good work.
Thanks for showing me how to swim coat a wall. I had a bathroom wall to do & to corners edges in hallway. It didn’t take 6 minutes but it turned out great. The one thing I did different was use an old paint brush to apply the the joint compound instead of a roller…Thanks again!!! Candace 😀
For any imperfections on walls or to get rid of texture on walls is skim coating a better method than replacing with entirely new sheets of dry wall? Also what’s more time and cost affective?
Outstanding series on Skim coating Sir. As a retired Marine living in a pre 1960 home, that I suspect I has led paint and asbestos on the walls and ceilings. I'm attempting a DIY project to skim coat everything to encapsulate any nasty toxins rather than scrape the surfaces down smooth. Before I get myself in trouble, is this a wise approach or do you have a alternative I should consider? Also, is it necessary to remove the baseboards and trim when skim coating? I personally do not want to as it will kick up and expose toxins. Appreciate and suggestions as I can't afford the drywall pros in my area. Thanks and Semper Fi, Ken
Hey Rob!💥👊🏻 Yes, I have a whole set of Columbia skimming blades and love them!🔥 Here’s a couple videos I have of them: ruclips.net/p/PL7Ww-LhWbB0EulaAAZHGWsHLjQz7x4e2z Thanks for watching and commenting my friend!😎 -Paul
I am a new subscriber and I'm working on my son's bedroom. I removed the wall paper already. Luckily, I don't have to do the ceiling. This will be my first time at this. Do you sand in between each skim coat? You make it look so easy. I'm sure that it is not. But you also give me confidence to try this. Thanx. 💕
Paul, you make this look so easy and I enjoyed watching the video. I will be skim coating my living room walls eventually because while removing the wallpaper, I created some gouges and some of the first layer of the drywall pulled-off as well. One question, did you have to use a lot of water to thin the first application of joint compound?
Hey Jeff!💥👊🏻 Check this skim coat mixing video out: ruclips.net/video/mZIbAiXO3o4/видео.html Let me know what you think. Thanks so much for watching and commenting my friend!😎 -Paul
Paul- I am a female DIY residing in a big Brooklyn brownstone where I do 70% of the repairs. I learned how to skim coat from You Tube last year. Do you ever add plaster powder to the joint compound so that it dries a bit faster? Would doing that enable say the ceiling to dry because gravity? Is there anything wrong with doing that? :-)
Can the green lid All Purpose be used for the 1st and 2nd skim coating. How thick/ thin should the skim coat be? How thin for the first and 2nd layers?
QUESTION: what's a ballpark price for the labor of skim coating/prepping a wall for a standard bedroom, say 10'x12'?? I'm soon closing on my first home, a fixer upper that I plan to remove the wallpaper and paint myself. I've watched the majority of your videos and feel like I know so much now. Given 2200sf of all wallpaper, I figure I may want to pay for some work to reduce time to have it ready.
My issue is getting the smooth wides spreads when applying mud with a taping knife like all of you do in these videos. It also seems like the mud stays spreadable for a lot longer than my reality. Does drywall mud spread easier on bare walls then painted walls?
I took wall paper down and sanded wall after removing 85% of the paper/glue. I have scraped loose paint on down to sheet rock. Do I need to skim coat the walls because of that? Also I should apply GARDZ to the entire area?
Hey Paul. Much love but a bunch of brothers have some good questions here and you just answered with a heart reaction.. Like you are good brother and give lots of info in every video but how about an answer. If we need to pay to join and get one just make that cl6. I was already considering that.

Yesterday I worked, edited and uploaded a video and still answered questions.😅 Anyways, I’ve answered all of the questions from this video. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thank you for watching and commenting man! -Paul
What is the skim your applying to the wall? Ive only ever seen skimming done with a hawk and trowel and a grey or pink multi finish. Im assuming thats not the case in the states/canada?
I would just use joint compound or spackle. Just put a little on your finger to fill those small nail holes. Because if you use a drywall knife to fill them you’ll have a bigger smooth area to deal with.👍🏻
Hey there CW!💥👊🏻 I’ve had good success with a product called Strait-Flex Uno Bead. Or just cutting out the damaged metal bead section and replacing it with a new piece of metal bead works good too. What type of damage do you have? -Paul
Just when I have customers that have minor chips from general wear on the corners of the walls. I usually just use paper tape if the chip is deep enough.
Hey there Ozzie!💥👊🏻 Usually if a popcorn ceiling hasn’t been painted, you can just touch it and it will move around with just a little pressure and be a bit dusty as well.👍🏻 I hope this helps. -Paul
No I don’t Nicholas. Checkout this video where I show what I do in between skim coats: ruclips.net/video/3GQvy0UZkaU/видео.html Let me know what you think. Thanks for watching and commenting!😎 -Paul
Not always. It all depends on what your skim coating over. 👍🏻 A textured wall will take two skim coats and smooth wall might just take one skim coat depending on how much damage it has. I hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.😎 -Paul

You just put mud over wallpaper! , ! , with out locking it down with an oil primer ! Wow , That’s fortunate for u , we have many problems when u jut apply mud on wallpaper with out priming it ! , we prime it usually with zinsser product lock the paper sand it and cut any bubbles or imperfections then apply mud and my walls usually end up on a level 6 quality

what primer do you use for the covering of the torn wallpaper spots
How about skim coating a wall that has a glossy paint finish? Any need to get roughen the surface first with sand paper?
