The fugue beginning at 1:20:09 must be one of the most surprising, and yet beautiful moments in the piece. It's an incredible subject, and developed pretty aggressively, with stretti almost immediately after the four-part statement. It's a beautiful moment, and climactic in just the right way before the quiet ending. It must stand alongside Liszt's Dante Symphony as one of the best integrations of fugue in a Romantic orchestral work.

The performances were beyond first class! The soloists each had divine voices and many times were ecstatic. I did not know the piece being performed but was comfortably entertained by soloists and a fantastic chorus. The orchestra complemented the whole, giving clarity, and pure individual artistry, all drawn together by their conductor, who fine tuned the piece and imbibed it with his energy, enthusiasm and commitment to every note, each word. Superlatives desert me; it was simply superb!
An excellent version, probably the best you can find nowadays in a video format. Orchestra, conductor and chorus are excepcional, as well as the soloists, above all the magnificent mezzosoprano Violeta Urmana. Thank you very much for uploading this marvelous concert.
I'm going on a classical listening journey, listening to the '100 Greatest Classical Works' list, and Giuseppe Verdi's Requiem sits comfortably at Number 52 out of 100. Stupendous Requiem and outstanding performance! Verdi used his incompatible mastery of vocal ensemble in this masterpiece. For too long I was so enamored with Mozart’s Requiem, I wouldn’t want to listen to Verdi’s, even though I’ve known most of his operas by heart. I’m glad I came to my senses!

Stunning. A great rendition of a work that I have been listening to for 70 years, live and recordings. The 1967 live performance in Montreal with Karajan conducting La Scala, Pavarotti, Ghiaurov, Price, Cosotto was unforgettable but this one comes close.
The fact that Ms. Urmana takes the mezzo-sopran instead the soprano is baffling to me. Same with Eboli, another high mezzo role. And the Verdi Requiem. Has she ever sung Kundry? Ortrud? Would be a knockout.
Magnifica interpretazione del capolavoro verdiano: cast stellare ma soprattutto perfettamente armonizzato sia sul piano stilistico sia su quello fonico-timbrico. This superb Chorus is one of the finest I've heard. Beautiful singing throughout, especially in the very quiet sections of the piece. Lovely. Extremely clear diction. I can see why they have the superb reputation they have. Very well-deserved and I hope that the hr-Sinfonieorchester invites them to perform more often with them. Also enjoyed the bass soloist. And I always enjoy the outstandingly superb hr-Sinfonieorchester and watching them perform, and Andrés Orozco-Estrada is excellent at working with a Chorus (there are some conductors who are not). Enjoyed seeing the Cimbassina(?) at the end of the brass section. Danke.
I agree about the choir, but I feel the mikeing of the choir could have been better in the pianissimo portions. I have sung this as a member of the choir under the baton of Seiji Ozawa and believe me it was a peak experience, and this performance is the closest I've come since.

the aftermath of wrath
People say "I want this played at my funeral" to any song but this is most canonically fitting
Not really, cause the Dies Irae was excluded from the lithurgic rite in 1970, so is "non canonic"

Comme l'a dit Brahms "seul un génie a pu écrire une telle oeuvre"
1:26:11 Ce geste de gratitude du Chef d'orchestre à la fin veut tout dire! "merci pour ce petit bijou Verdi!" :)
it seems impossible to not perform this masterpiece exceptionally well - when it's done as perfectly as this rendition
What a fantastic performance! I love how this requiem toes the line between Catholic mass and opera.
I can't get tired of this...
Großartig !!! So eine spannende Interpretation habe ich noch nie gehört und mitgesungen 😌 😍
Wonderful performance featuring four soloists with excellent voices who all sing very well. The recorded sound quality is amazing.
This will always be my favorite piece. Absolutely incredible
Amazing! Everyone does such a fantastic job. And those SOLOISTS!! So happy I get to see this and that it's out there for everyone to enjoy.
Singers are great! I loved the soprano, wonderful technique
Outstanding Performance!!! Bravo!
Magnifique ! Un des plus beaux requiems !
Semplicemente da brividi.
excellent performance.great maestro, great control, interesting to watch.soloists, perfect voice. choral- very good dynamics, syncopation, intonation. orchestra perfect as well. loved it
This superb Chorus is one of the finest I've heard. Danke.
I have spent years listening to Verdi's Requiem, both recorded and live. This performance is THE BEST. Thank you very much.
So that's what that was....a "cimbassina!"
I agree about the choir, but I feel the mikeing of the choir could have been better in the pianissimo portions. I have sung this as a member of the choir under the baton of Seiji Ozawa and believe me it was a peak experience, and this performance is the closest I've come since.
