This choir/conductor "gets" the Russian subtlety of Melody carrying the most important thoughts in the lyrics: Psalm 1 begins the weekly cycle of Psalms read by Orthodox Christians.. most glorious psalms used in all services and teaching us from St Davids love of God in Christ the pre-Incarnate Lord He knew by Faith and loved in his worshipful psalmody! Alleluia and Alleluia, Alleluia...3 times for the Holy Trinity Whom we praise forever!!

I hear the dark, winter wind blowing through the Siberian trees, the only sound within miles of still and frozen silence, the very breath of God himself. Slava tebe bozhe. :-)

prominent interprets of the whole bulk of Rakhmaninov's music - his concerts, operas etc., he performed and recorded nearly everything there is. And after his choir brilliantly won in 1975 the international contest of polyphonic choirs "Guido d'Arezzo" in Italy, it became also possible for this choir to sing music that was restricted to others

Is it me, or did they fall by about a semitone by the end?
    The piece is just beautiful.

+Carlos Rodriguez I've sung this piece (both as a soprano and alto) multiple times and truthfully, always found #3 the hardest to keep in tune even by the end of the first 10 measures. So many repeated notes that can drag. I think their tempo is actually helping keep the pitch up - because I agree with Saxy, they aren't really dropping til the end. I do wish the conductor took it a bit slower so you could hear the basses do their 8th note drops to D/C at the end, kind of like little bassoons. It's a bit missed at this tempo, but no one can argue with the tone.

Yes, Sveshnikov's version was for export only. As for recording of 1986, it was released on vinyl by "Melodiya" (the one and only recording company in the USSR) in 1987, and I bought it that way somewhen around 1990, so the answer is yes :) given the period - Perestroika and all that. In 1995 this version was released in CD under the label of Melodiya and BMG (Bertelsmann), and this is the source I used for these videos.

Not a very simple question to answer :) to put it very short, it was allowed not as RELIGIOUS work, but as material based on general HISTORIC, cultural, folk-based heritage - as Rachmaninov draws heavily on ancient chants in this music. So such out-of-service performances were occasionally allowed - with "history", "culture", "folklore roots" and similar blah-blah. To the possibility of it being performed under the Soviet rule contributed also the fact that Polyansky was one of the most

I own the 1965 Sveshnikov-conducted State Russian Choir version, which was the first recording ever. It was allowed to be exported from the USSR, but sale inside the USSR was forbidden. As a follow-up question to Vitaliy: Was the 1986 recording allowed to be sold in the USSR or only for export?
The 65 and 86 recordings sound remarkably similar. I love the faster versions of this piece like Tenebrae's recording, but there is something wonderful about the somber, slow USSR ones.
