My Arc ultra arrived this past Wednesday, replacing my Arc which I loved. I have 300’s as surround speakers and a Sonos sub. Set up was straight forward for the ultra but needed Sonos tech support to reconnect the 300’s and sub. Though I waited about 20 minutes to connect with support, they were fantastic and resolved all issues in a relatively short time. The sound is amazing. Since I have moderate hearing loss and wear hearing aids, speech recognition can be problematic. I find the three levels in defining speech, low, medium and high, a dramatic difference for me in speech recognition. I have left it on medium and it works amazingly. I used to use subtitles but it is so clear and defined that it is now unnecessary. Kudos Sonos! For me, it was worth the upgrade.
Is this a known set of issues? e.g., if you have an existing Sonos setup, and want to repurpose rears or subs in another room, are there setup transition issues?
Yes...sound is audible, clear and pronounced now...but still no warmth in sound like playbar...same tinny voice and flat sounding like original Arc....no mid bass ..reduced internal volume compared to arc...may be that could be reason for another horrible terrible tinny voice despite mayht woofer and change in acoustic architecture with extra drivers..Sonos should have at least retained same original internal volume of arc or must have gone with bigger volume like playbar
Had the same issue with sports. Figured out if you go to settings Tv level and bump that up , you get the best of both worlds. The announcer dialogue is still crisp and the crowd volume is still immersive. The ultra now gives you a lot of options to tweak the sound to your individual liking.
FINALLY… SOMEONE DID A VALUE-BASED REVIEW! 🙏🏽 Considered the price difference of an Arc $699 USD (on sale for Black Friday) to the Ultra $999 (not on sale).
Go for the Arc Ultra if you plan to get the soundbar alone (assuming your TV has eArc). The v1 Arc+sub and/or surrounds would be a less expensive option if you wanted to include those sooner. The Arc and Arc Ultra improves with additional pieces AND the sound differences start to close depending on the type of sub/speakers. The gap between the Arc and Arc Ultra narrows more if you had dual subs and Era 300 surrounds compared to Arc vs Arc Ultra alone.
Got mine last night (upgrading from the arc) and have only had minimal time to really give it a go, impressed and pleased with what i have heard so far. I recommend the upgrade if you can afford it, and if it makes practical sense, I have a place for the arc to go, which will fit nicely into this other space.
I did the same and move my old v1 Arc to master bedroom to replace Beam Gen 1 (Gen 3 sub+symfonisk rears in master). I didn't have an issue with dialogue with the v1 Arc and the Arc Ultra has a noticeable improvement in that area.
I got an ultra arc era 300’s and a sub. The arc set up just fine but the era 300 woukd not connect to my WiFi. But I noticed for some reason after the Arc was hooked up the wifi adresss looked a little different. I have a Eero satellites around the house to get the signal better. I have the eero system a name and it happened to have an apostrophe ‘ s at the end of one of the words I used. I realized it was not reading the name of my wifi system properly because of that. So support showed me how to out the name of my wifi in manually. That was the problem . All the components after using a manual input of my wifi name worked great. The system is working wonderful. No problem with the app. Also I have a family member who works for Sonos , he gave me a code he received from the company and it got me 50 percent off the entire system. Very happy with it for sure
I appreciate you covering HomePods in this video. I have two full-size HomePods, and while I’m satisfied with the setup, I feel Dolby Atmos content isn’t fully realised. I’m planning to upgrade to Sonos Ultra and eventually add the 300s.
Great information and I’m also a huge Apple and Sonos fan. I have Sonos in multiple rooms but am considering upgrading my Arc with Sub in my bedroom to Arc Ultra. I don’t have space behind my bed for rear speakers and think that the Arc Ultra may produce better surround sound and Dolby Atmos effects. Sub and Like added!
I upgraded my Arc (dual subs+fives) in main TV room to the Arc Ultra. Moved the v1 Arc into master bedroom to replace Beam Gen 1 (Gen 3 sub+symfonisk). I really like the rear surrounds sitting on the night stands because it provide additional sound/dialogue for night time viewing at a lower volume.
I bought a Sonos Arc Ultra and disappointed that base is not great w/o a sub woofer. I get what the sub woofers add to the experience but don't want to dish out another few hundred. Anyways, I don't mind spending the money to complete the experience so I'd like to ask if the Sub Mini's are good enough or is it really worth getting the premium wireless sub Gen 4? Looking forward to your thoughts. Thank you.
Sonos has a HDMI in for audio with the option to use optical adapter if your audio source doesn't have Arc/eArc (can only get Atmos with eArc HDMI out to soundbar). My SmartTV has four HDMI ports with one being Arc or eArc. I use my TV as the pass through HDMI for Blu-ray/DVD player, PS4, computer for extra monitor, or cable box.
Just double-check to make sure the TV you pick will not have dialogue issues with Sonos. I have zero issues with loud and clear dialogue with my LG OLEDs with my Beam Gen 1/2, Arc v1, and Arc Ultra. Setting your TV eArc HDMI to bitstream (or pass through) and not PCM (Auto) can help improve dialogue; but, not always on every TV.
The Arc Ultra will be an improvement over the Arc or Beam alone. The Arc Ultra and other soundbars will sound increasingly better as you add additional sub(s) and rears (One SLs, Era 100/300, or Fives). You have the options to try the Arc Ultra with and without the Ones for 5.1 and Atmos content.
A really beautiful and well thought out video. I'm interested in getting into the Sonos speaker field, I have a 24 square meter guest room, I should buy a beam 2+ With mini sub and era 100 or arc ultra white mini sub ?
Thanks for the video Eric. Like you, I currently have the Beam G2 and Sub mini and would like your opinion please - does it make sense to use the sub mini with the Ultra or is the base in the Ultra good enough as a standalone? I'm considering selling my Beam and sub mini and just getting the Ultra on it's own for now. Would appreciate your opinion - thx.
I would say it depends on the size of the room. The Ultra has good base for its size but when in doubt I would add a sub. I have 2 Gen 3 subs in a large room along with 2 Era 300s and it is amazing . I had an OG Arc and the Ultra is much better .
I have a Beam 2, Gen 3 sub, and One SLs on a LG OLED 55C1 in a smaller office. I have the Arc Ultra, dual Gen 3 subs, and Fives in another room 3X the size larger on LG OLED 77C1. Both sound fantastic and seem to be the right size in either space. Either soundbar will sound better as you add a sub and surrounds. I would go for the Beam system in a smaller space with a smaller TV. I would go for the Arc Ultra in a med-large space with the potential to add a sub and surround later.
Just got a beam 2 + sub mini + 2 x era 100 setup and man do they sound phenomenal!! Haven’t tried Arc Ultra but you cannot compare a single sound bar vs an entire 5.1 surround setup. The 5.1 setup will win hands down. It also depends on your room size and wall thickness (if you live in an apartment). With an Arc home theater setup, you will definitely get a higher resolution when it comes to surround sound (since beam 2 has virtual height channels vs true height channels in Arc) but in the end it all boils down to your room size and budget.
Did you run the advanced trueplay? It's currently bugged and doesn't have the right bass response. You need to do quick trueplay to have optimal results
The iPhone Trueplay is the way to go for optimizing the sound for your space and primary listening position. The quick Trueplay only optimizes at the speaker's current location with the built-in mics. You can then adjust the EQ in the app to add more soundbar bass, sub bass, height, or surround levels w/ or w/o either Trueplay. You might need to play with sub placement if you are not getting enough bass? I have my dual subs on either sides of the soundbar with the open ends pointed toward me. I also have my LG OLED eArc HDMI set to bitstream and it shows "Atmos" on the iPhone app when watching a streaming show with this type of audio format.
I ordered the BEAM 2 + Sub Mini + ERA 100's well I didn't even open the Beams box and sent it back and ordered the ARC ULTRA my question is can i just keep the sub mini and ERA 100's and hook them up to the Arc Ultra and will it make any difference compared to the ARC ULTRA by itself ? are they worth keeping ? in the future i may get the gen 4 sub and the Era 300's the room that it is for is 12 x 12 feet with 7.5 foot ceilings your thoughts ? thx cheers from Canada
what do you think about which one is the smarter choice to buy, at Amazon last year's model Samsung Q990C is available for 930$ which includes sub and rear speakers in a package or this one? Sonos soundbar just alone cost the same as the Samsung full package? but I heard that Samsung does not deliver full Atmos sound even when soundbar and rear speakers have dedicated up-firing speakers
You have the flexibility with Sonos to add sub(s) and speakers as needed depending on your budget and audio needs for years. I started with a Nakamichi 7.2.4 and was stuck with that system. Upgraded to Sonos and added and move speakers around the house as needed (the Nakamichi is in a closet collecting dust).
Because it’s a new product it may not go on sale. Depending on where you buy it from though, I’d imagine you ought to be able to get an adjustment if the price drops on Black Friday.
I bought my playbar from sonos years ago and they offered me a 15% upgrade coupon which i applied to my arc ultra purchase. Im satisfied. And i sold my sold playbar locally.
I’m contemplating a new TV in the next couple of years and I’ve been on the fence with replacing my receiver and 5.1 Klipsch setup with Sonos. Are we there yet where I won’t feel I’m spending more money and getting less in return?
I have some family members with nice surround Klipsch systems. I think it depends a little on the system but I agree you aren't gaining much if anything in sound quality by switching to Sonos, aside from newer systems potentially like this adding support for Dolby Atmos. The bigger payoff for Sonos is having the multiroom features and the wireless convenience with sound quality that is in the same ballpark as your existing system. For lots of people, wiring speakers into their ceiling or even running speaker wire to surrounds is more than they want to do.
I have both and the Arc Ultra is a better purchase if you only want/need a stand alone soundbar. Both soundbars will sound better as you add sub(s) and rear surrounds. As you add pieces, the sound gap narrows between the Arc and Arc Ultra. I have the Arc (later upgraded to the Arc Ultra) with dual Gen 3 subs and Fives. I didn't notice the extra bass of the Arc Ultra with 2 subs on either side; but, the dialogue was noticeably clearer on the Arc Ultra. Dialogue with Sonos comes in loud, clear, and clean on my LG OLEDs (C9/Beam1, C1/Arc Ultra, C1/Beam2, & C4/Arc).
Stereo separate is great. You could put right and left speakers farther apart and get more, but this is plenty for my taste. Arc and Arc Ultra have components aimed to fire in left and right directions
Lol @oftensalty. It's a good point @Rigue2021. I don't have an open floor plan living room. I would bet this soundbar has enough power to handle that situation well but I haven't tried it myself. You might see less of the sound pointed around the room if the soundbar doesn't have walls or a low ceiling.
Just got mine today, it’s a massive difference in sound. It’s a legitimate stand alone soundbar. Perfect for an apartment with cry baby neighbors lol. Jk
Comments elsewhere indicate Sonos has only basic DTS capability, not DTS:X, nor other advanced DTS variants. What is your (or other commenters') take on when where and what consumers are missing with these DTS omissions? What consumers might want to look at Sonos competitors that DO include advanced DTS options?
Hiya mate, I've literally just picked up my Ultra today which is an upgrade to our current OG Arc so was wondering if you could answer a quick question for me: I've got the full rig with a pair of 300 Surrounds and 2 Sub Gen 3's. As I've not started the switch-over yet could you tell me if you removed your Surrounds and Sub from your system before swapping over to the Ultra from your Beam? And just another quick question if you don't mind, did the app actually give you the option to remove the Beam from your system or did it give you some sort of option to swap your Beam over to the Ultra?
@EpicTunaProductions thanks for the reply mate, top banana 👍🏻 That is what i did and I've got it all set up already, it was a breeze. Like it never even asked me to Trueplay it. I've whacked on The Dark Knight Rises and it's booming, definitely hasn't made the 2 Subs any quieter which is something I did read someone claim. I have instantly noticed that dialogue is definitely clearer and louder. The only wee niggle I've encountered is that the system is showing 2 Living Rooms on the app at the minute and I ain't sussed out how to remove/delete the old one?
Exactly. Not worth the upgrade straight from the Arc. For many techys and audiophiles I can see it. But not a casual listener that just watches movies.
Probably make more sense to add a sub to a stand alone v1 Arc compared to upgrading 1-for-1 to the Arc Ultra. You still have the option with the v1 Arc to add Gen 1-4 sub(s), current Era 100/300, One series speakers, Play 1/3/5 speakers, and Symfonisk speakers for surround (sub+surrounds will outperform a stand alone Arc Ultra). Downside: don't know when Sonos will brick older speakers, including the +4 year old v1 Arc.
Erik Cancer is really beautiful, well done. If you recommend upgrading beam 2 +sub mini + era 100 to arc ultra? Is it worth the investment? The size of my living room is 24 square meters...
I have arc ultra 2 subs Gen3 and 2 era 100 as surrounds in a similar space, If you know how to place the speakers and the subs then you will be blown away but if you don’t know then you might end up in a difficult situation, Subs might cancel each other and have less bass output, but this is expensive and if you don’t have passion for extreme sound then don’t do it, there are cheaper options and effective ones, Bottom line spend some time for speaker placement and sound e and you will always have a good result what ever speakers and set up you use
I have sono arc plus 2 era plus 2 sub gen 3 do you think add another 2 era from stereo speakers in same room will be worth it ? Do you think I should repeat true play again will all the speakers set up .
The way I see it is that HDMI is simply the latest standard for an audio cable for the speaker. If you want more HDMI ports, it's on the TV or receiver manufacturer to add more, not the speakers.
@@EricWelanderThat's nonsense. For that price, they could definitely offer more HDMI ports. I have connected Apple TV and games consoles to my LG ds95 QR. Lossless forwarding
I bought a used (but mint) Arc for £400 and it is MUCH better than the Beam 2 it replaced. Arc Ultra at £900 didn’t seem worth double. This review isn’t very accurate.
Bought the sonos arc ultra: sent straight back for a full refund. Disappointing. Setup not straightforward or seamless at all. App rubbish. No ability to change from movie mode to music mode to concert mode etc to try and improve sound quality. EQ: treble and base alterations only. This was for music playback. TV sound OK but not overly impressed: I'm skeptical that similar quality can't be found at a much lower price point.
Am not sure how this comment will go here but here it goes. At the same price of this bar u can get a samsung q990d which has a bar, a sub and 2 rear speakers. I understand sonos has a lot of options and upgradability but for a lot of houses the Samsung will be more than enough. I guess sonos is for the elite group of people in the sound bar segment the same as the nakamichi dragon.
Honestly I had the Q990C and the dialogue was trash on that. Obviously it's down to personal preference because sound is subjective, but the Q990C just left me wanting for a lot more. I also found the dialogue to be very tinny out of the bar, because it doesn't leverage the woofer in any way (and doesnt have any bass in the soundbar to begin with). I have an old Lifestyle 650 system that has a pretty trash center channel, but it leverages the woofer for voice, thus adding a much nicer dimension.
I started with the Nakamichi 7.2.4 in main TV room and I added v1 Beam with rear Symfonisk bookshelf as rear surround in my Office. I had a hard time "dialing" in the Nakamichi and always had to grab the soundbar remote to adjust the sound with every cable show, streaming show, or music listening. The Sonos Beam system just worked out the box perfectly after TruePlay. I added the Gen 3 Sub to the Beam a year later and swapped out the Symfonisk with One SLs 6 months later. The Beam system sounded better than the Nakamichi. Upgraded main TV room to the v1 Arc, dual Gen 3 subs, and Fives as rears and it sounded fantastic. Planning to upgrade the v1 Arc to the Arc Ultra (move the v1 Arc to master bedroom to replace a 2nd v1 Beam+sub+original Symfonisk from office). I couldn't do this upgrade path with the Nakamichi and this is the reason it is sitting in a closet collecting dust.
DTS-HD stereo is converted to PCM stereo. DTS-HD 5.1 or 7.1 is converted to Multichannel PCM 7.1. If you have a good Blu-ray player like the Panasonic DP-UB 9000, you will not notice a difference in sound quality. The loss of “X” is unavoidable on DTS:X though.
It was rough and they are gradually making it better. I talked about it a while ago on a live stream. I think it was a mistake to push all the users to a new experience, but I think at this point Sonos is trying to move past the issues. They still make great speakers. Also if you use Apple AirPlay and otherwise audio from your TV, you don't have to use their app a lot.
It’s gotten better and is more stable than it was a few months ago, at least for me. My primary use is Home Theater and I do t use it for music as much. When I have however it’s worked fine.

@mrgold3591 my exact experience with the dialogue. Didn't know it could get better, or needed to. But happy with it.
At 7:00 you had a great idea: they should have a setting where it can detect when enhanced dialog makes the most sense and activate it automatically.

Missing a pass through HDMI, no DTS X??? So how did you use this with tv sound? Mis it or only use the soundbar?
Sonos has a HDMI in for audio with the option to use optical adapter if your audio source doesn't have Arc/eArc (can only get Atmos with eArc HDMI out to soundbar). My SmartTV has four HDMI ports with one being Arc or eArc. I use my TV as the pass through HDMI for Blu-ray/DVD player, PS4, computer for extra monitor, or cable box.

The iPhone Trueplay is the way to go for optimizing the sound for your space and primary listening position. Question - Why is it most of these videos are showing an enclose room (living room is a close box).
This. Lots (likely most) newer homes and apartments are open concept.
Will Sub gen 2 work as great as sub gen 3/4?
The Sonos website FAQ for Arc Ultra states all gens of subs will work; but, you need one Gen 3 or 4 sub for dual subs.
Just got mine today, it’s a massive difference in sound. It’s a legitimate stand alone soundbar. Perfect for an apartment with cry baby neighbors lol. Jk
Why half of RUclipsrs pushing upgrade? I'm going to buy it as my first soundbar
If you have no soundbar the question is still valid - should you pay more for the new one or get the old one for cheaper?
@BoomerPlusUltra is exactly right. This is why I have a segment in the video comparing two common Sonos options that cost around $1K.
@@BoomerPlusUltra for now old Arc for $900 makes no sense
If you’re in the states the Arc was just 699 at Best Buy yesterday
@@walidhannaoui1802 that was probably an open box
Sie haben die Schwachpunkte denke ich gut ausgemerzt 😮
It is important to use threadlocker, the sound vibration loosen the screws overtime
wow, I will wait for sonos arc ultra super omega plus, that`s the best, with sub gen7 and Eras 750 that`s coming with dolby atmos too
Comments elsewhere indicate Sonos has only basic DTS capability, not DTS:X, nor other advanced DTS variants.
What is your (or other commenters') take on when where and what consumers are missing with these DTS omissions? What consumers might want to look at Sonos competitors that DO include advanced DTS options?
Sony quad is a better option if you have physical media
Hiya mate, I've literally just picked up my Ultra today which is an upgrade to our current OG Arc so was wondering if you could answer a quick question for me:
I've got the full rig with a pair of 300 Surrounds and 2 Sub Gen 3's.
I had to remove the surrounds and sub before disconnecting the old arc. They wont show up on the ultra if you don't
@EpicTunaProductions thanks for the reply mate, top banana 👍🏻
That is what i did and I've got it all set up already, it was a breeze.
Is it worth paying an extra £400 for the Ultra?
@@mrgold3591you can still buy the ARC now, so let’s hope it’s no time soon.
Audiophiles don’t buy Sonos.
Sonos needs to allow the customer to use (5) Era 300’s as a complete 5 channel system already. How hard could it be.
Erik Cancer is really beautiful, well done.
If you recommend upgrading beam 2 +sub mini + era 100 to arc ultra? Is it worth the investment? The size of my living room is 24 square meters...
I have arc ultra 2 subs Gen3 and 2 era 100 as surrounds in a similar space,
If you know how to place the speakers and the subs then you will be blown away but if you don’t know then you might end up in a difficult situation,
Subs might cancel each other and have less bass output, but this is expensive and if you don’t have passion for extreme sound then don’t do it, there are cheaper options and effective ones,
Bottom line spend some time for speaker placement and sound e and you will always have a good result what ever speakers and set up you use
Those are great points. Also using Sonos Advanced TruePlay tuning will make the most of your end setup.
I have sono arc plus 2 era plus 2 sub gen 3 do you think add another 2 era from stereo speakers in same room will be worth it ? Do you think I should repeat true play again will all the speakers set up .
Big spender 😉
@ for add other 2 era? Normally I keep it at least for 15/20 jears last Bose system
Think imma go for an Arc Ultra and then Symfonisk speakers down the road, whenever IKEA decides to have a sale...
I haven't tried the Symfonisk models myself but that sounds like a good plan.
But it only has 1 HDMI port😢
and why it would need more? its only ARC for TV
@@SAFRECwhy wouldn't it. Only one HDMI input is pretty cheap from them. You are completely dependent on your TV set.
The way I see it is that HDMI is simply the latest standard for an audio cable for the speaker. If you want more HDMI ports, it's on the TV or receiver manufacturer to add more, not the speakers.
@@EricWelandergoing from a device to tv hdmi then speaker hdmi causes latency. It’s better to go from a PS5 direct to speaker.
Most people can’t get access to an Arc at 400. That changes the decision for sure. Congrats on a great deal 🎉
Tech is developed by two dutch guys and bought by sonos for 100 million.
I think I'll stick with my Samsung Q990D 😉.
Makes sense considering the lack of dts
Best according to RTINGS as well. Only thing is no dual subs which would make it even better.
you need that gen 4 or 3 sub bud lol i have the ultra 300s and gen 4 sub
Useless, doesnt support the standard DTS HD MA from UHD Bluray discs. Thats 99% of my watching.
Sonos works for me because Bluray or gaming is 0% of my watching since 2021.
How often do you rewatch blueray discs??? It is rare I watch a movie twice so I never bought discs. Many have no need for DTS.
Everybody goes dolby atmos these days. You are the only one sticking with DTS
Whatever happened with their app fiasco?
It was rough and they are gradually making it better. I talked about it a while ago on a live stream. I think it was a mistake to push all the users to a new experience, but I think at this point Sonos is trying to move past the issues. They still make great speakers. Also if you use Apple AirPlay and otherwise audio from your TV, you don't have to use their app a lot.
It’s gotten better and is more stable than it was a few months ago, at least for me. My primary use is Home Theater and I do t use it for music as much. When I have however it’s worked fine.
Wait for Black Friday for the best deals.
As a newer model it may not go on sale. The Era 300’s didn’t when they came out.
New sonos isnt going on sale lol.
@ - Did I say it would? 🤡
Can’t wait for 30% off when these suckers paid full price
If you are hoping to get an Arc (non-ultra) at a discount, this would make sense. The Arc Ultra likely won't get discounted this year.
