My husband was on the construction crew that built the Rawlins House, on Newport Harbor, not the ocean. Upon their deaths, he also refreshed the home to prepare it for sale. It was the next door neighbor who surprised Mr. and Mrs. Rawlins when he put large, shark teeth around the opening, hence the house being named the "Jaws" house, not because of the shape. The beautiful wooden sink in the downstairs bathroom was hand carved by T. Duncan Stewart, the general contractor who built the home. The Rawlins family supported the symphonic arts and held concerts in their home. The orange couch is actually modular so that it would become individual seating for concert guests.

Thanks for your reaction. Great to read that your husband helped to built the amazing house. Yes, I knew about the shark teeth around the opening, but for me personally the house looks a bit like a shark with it's grey colours and big ''mouth like'' opening. So I guess there was a reason why they choose to put the teeth in the house: they already thought that it looked like a shark. I also knew that it's next to newport beach, but the ocean is right behind it. Thanks for sharing your story about the symphonic concerts, I didn't knew that! I would love to visit a concert in this house, it would be a great place for concerts.

Great presentation. I used to live across the bay from this house on the peninsula and would walk past it often. They would leave the curtains open in the evening and you could see right in to the living room and kitchen. My dad would say "who would want to live in a fish bowl like that?"

Mostly simplicity on the outside that is easily visible. Then, the magic of John Lautner takes place in every way to making it a living spectacular experience. Thx to him and to the documentarian.

The house looks so simple, but is yet so complex when you look closer. That's what I like so much about Lautner: each house is full of surprises. That why I love making these videos : you discover all the great details by researching the houses. Thank that you like the videos so much, more will come up, but it takes a lot of time to make them, so terefore I haven't uploaded any of them the passing three months. Next month the firs of a new serie of videos will be uploaded.

Love your very descriptive videos. Lautner homes are intriguingly clever and able to provide such a rich living experience in very small footprint. Modern but homey. So beautiful. The more recent modern homes where I live in Malibu are often stark and cold and cookie cutter boring I feel. Thank you for sharing these.

Definitely a house that’s the product of a creative mind! Lots of interesting details. Nice also to see that it’s occupied by Mid-Century Modern enthusiasts, as evidenced by the choice of furniture and books. Thanks for the informative and stylishly presented video tour. :)

This home is about 15 miles away from where I live now. When we were younger' we would roller skate on Balboa Island and skate past this home. I have several friends that live on Balboa Island and while it is nice, it is quite crowded, and parking is (when visiting) is very hard to find. We will typically park a mile or so away in a shopping center and ride bikes the rest of the way. If you can't afford a home here it is nice to friends that can...

There is a John Lautner lecture online.
The video quality is low, he uses a slide projector and it's in black and white.
The pictures of the houses etc.... look like blobs.
One suggestion is to take that lecture video ( in two parts) and add color images of the architecture etc... so it becomes clear what he is discussing.
