The Sweep has got the "right stuff", great knowledge and timing - holding back for the end of that set, picking off a smaller, but no less malevolent wave, then SO well ridden. I wish my dad could see this, he was a bow - rower.

Love to read more about the actual rescues these boats could perform. Did they sit out the back beyond the breakers picking up swimmers caught in a rip? As magnificent as these long boats are, there’s not a surf lifesaver (or swimmer) that wouldn’t have welcomed the introduction of inflatable rescue boats with powerful outboards.
These are useless for surf rescues. Apart from the difficulty of getting someone from the water into the boat without injuring them, you need to have the boat and a trained crew of five sitting on the shore at the right time. Few surfboats are now even stored at the beach - rather at stillwater locations (for competition training purposes). The most useful devices for surf rescues are surfboards and body boards. I worked several seasons as a lifeguard, and was a surfclub member.
@@johngraham245 best thing to rescue surfers is a jetsky with a rig in the back to carry surfers in their board. To try a surf rescue in another surf board or bodyboard implies even more risks so is not clever at all, good only when there are not other ways to do it. The person that you have to rescue can make the other surfer drown with him...
@John Graham these were used common place by the US Lufe Saving Service into early 20th century. They were launched from a variety of beaches in usually much worse conditions seen here and executed many rescues. While the list of names is long a good one to start with is Joshua James.

Looked like they were trolling for great whites. You drop in the drink and you become a little munchy for a hungry shark. Good thing they are so skillful.
It's a competition between Surf Life Saving Club's (SLSC) in Australia. These craft are an older design that work in our conditions and were primarily RESCUE craft, before the advent of Rigid - Inflatables and Jetski's. A man on a rescue - board is a very capable asset also. WITHOUT our SLSC a LOT of people would just drown mate, that's the plain fact. Kind regards from Sydney MATE!!!
The guy on tiller has some serious skill, to keep a craft that big straight on a wave that size was amazing
The "tiller" is known as the "Sweep", so is the man on it. The name is plural. #In Australia.
The strength it takes to control that is impressive. That guy deserves a medal.
That's "the sweep"

Ah the memories of trying to do this on a Hobie 14' and pitchpoling in front of everyone on the beach.
Yeah...Hobie's were well known for their ability to capsize! Get yourself a ride on a NACRA and see the difference!
Yeee-haw the Eight Second Ride!

Wow ! Are the vickings back ?
Do you mean the VIKING'S?
They're Aussie's mate, the "whale" boat is a pretty old design though, albeit very lightweight nowadays using composite materials. MORON!
This looks like fun lol
💪🏼🌊🤙🏼
There is only one guy better than old mate on sweep
Garry Butterworth from Burleigh
Nice skill
Wow
Woooowww keren😯😯😯👍👍👍
where Is it!?
How do they keep from broaching sideways?
It's fitted with a none broaching unit on the hull
By steering. The guy in the back is steering with the oar like a rudder.
It does go over most times

It peaked too high they may have been to vertical. It's not for fun, I think it's a lifeguard competition.
Because they know what they are doing. No glory in capsizing.
