This is an Orin Orisa/Praise song dedicated to the orisa Oshun, a deity in the Yoruba culture centered in Nigeria, Africa. This is a short, stylised rendition of the original, which is not to take away from the beauty of this version. It most certainly is, while still remaining a sacred praise song in traditional Yoruba culture. Versions of it are very commonly sung in the Lukumi/Santeria branch of the orisa tradition developed in Cuba from the enslaved Africans and their descendants, syncretized with the Roman Catholicism denomination of Christianity and picking up some Congolese culture in the form of palo mayombe along the way, and then carried to the USA, Puerto Rico, Mexico and other places. There is also a branch in South America, especially in Brazil and Venezuela. In Brazil the tradition is called Candomble. The Western versions have remarkably retained enough meilody and words to be recognizable in comparison to the original music. We are very fortunate for this very enormous blessing. Olodumare gbe' wa o.

What a beautiful song and background to its meaning and origin. I came to look for this original by way of Bachan Kaur who sings an amazing and simple heart stirring adaptation. Much love and thank you!
Does this activate any kind of energy in anyone else? Meaning, do you feel more open~ness and energetic or something like electricity or a vibration in your chest... anything? I read the comments and don't see anybody else talking about that kind of reaction... Seriously, I want to know. Some other songs, like Hearing You Now by Karunesh have similar effects... ?
No. Ide is the brass bracelets that initiates of Oshun wear. Sheke Sheke is the sound the bracelets make when shaken. This is not about a necklace. And it is a praise song, not an iwure (prayer).
@rosemarydomingo Sorry to bust your bubble, but it is YORUBA... How do u know if Yoruba that the West African slaves spoke, didnt eveolve into what it is today??? Even at that, I can still understand most of the words in the song, being a native Yoruba speaker myself. :) OSUNO, YEYE O, IYA MI O....Ashe!!!
Gidado you might understand it better if you heard the actual song. This artist's appropriative version butchers both the lyrics and the pronunciation. The ceremonial yoruba that is used in afro-cuban religious practice is far from the actual yoruba language spoken by the Yoruba people, but it is much more recognizable than whatever this was supposed to be.
It is pretty yes. The arrangement is her creation, not the song itself. The song is from a VERY EXTENSIVE body of sacred songs from the Yoruba culture, that is the Yoruba people of Nigeria.
@Sammy107d Please check this video:ballet folklorico Camaguey Lazaro ros ochun, and tell me if you understand something.I am cuban and this is part of our afro-cuban religion from yoruba tribes,of course we don't speak yoruba, but this was trasmited from slaves and they did not know how to write so everything was orally. That is why we can not say the words exactly as you do.Regards
Hace pocs meses descubri este preciosos mantra. Canto Yoruba (Nigèria), 'Ochum tintinea sis manos. Se oye llegar enjoyada, sin ella estariamos mal, Ochum és la primera que nos es consejos (de amor), es nuestra madre". Fuerte abrazo!
Ide refers to the brass bracelets children of Oshun wear. Oshun is the orisa that carries the needle that pulls the threads that sew together the fabric of society. Oshun was the only female Irunmole sent to Earth to organize it and help it to flourish when Olodumare sent the 17 Irunmoles (the orisa that are primordial, directly created by Olodumare, and not elevated human beings) here. She is one of the river orisa, who also include Oya, Yemoja, Oba, Erinle and others. Her source is the Oshun River (Odo) located in Nigeria in Africa. If you get on her wrong side, you will weep and moan. She is fierce and strict as well as loving and healing. She does not like anyone to punish or harm her children, but she will fiercely discipline them herself when they do wrong.
Amazingly Beautiful.... from the artist's website Ochun is the goddess of love, chant which speaks about a necklace which is a symbol of the initiation into love. (Yoruba, West Africa)

That is not the meaning of the song. Why are you taking a song from another culture and change its mood to suite you.
