I was a programmer and network administrator during my career. It's possible that an update caused the AT&T outage. But, it's also possible that something else caused it that AT&T will never want made public. The most important thing that you want in cell phone service is reliability. What is it worth to AT&T to keep it's customers? I'm betting it's more than $5.00 a shot.
I was spending $240 a MONTH with Crimecast for ONE tv in one room + cable + internet + landlines. Constant fees and price increases. I now have T-mobile 5g home internet and RUclips TV.
The real crime is that you paid it. At no point in the history of the world has anybody ever been forced to sign up for cable TV or a landline phone.
@@RoastBeefSandwich My internet comes through the landline phone. So I wouldn't get internet otherwise. I don't use a cellphone, but if I did, it wouldn't help that much. People in my area get 3G, sometimes 4G, but no 5G at all. We would need a lot more cell towers and antennas.
i feel really bad tbh, suddenlink (now optimum) here is only like 70 dollers a month, thats including cable.
Customers are spending more money and these streaming companies still aren’t profitable. Sounds like it’s all unsustainable
I keep picking up channels and dropping them a month later after I binge. Apple is killing it. The rest of them kinda suck, except for Feud on Hulu. And what happened to intelligent science fiction? Everything now is either a post apocalyptic earth populated by 15-year-olds or space monsters. How about some more shows like The Expanse and Altered Carbon? I waste so much money!
There are too many of them, so the money is spread too thin. Someone else in the comments said that we're going to end up with three big steaming services, just like the current cable companies and I tend to agree. All the smaller ones are going to either disappear or merge into the bigger ones.
I was thinking the same thing and I suspect they don't feel that streaming isn't "profitable enough" which is different than being not profitable. Hollywood has literally taken control of the streaming industry (and cable industry as well). They have made such a large profit in production (movies, TV especially in the case of syndication) that they expected big time profits.
I don't think Netflix operated under the big huge profit margin that Max, Hulu and others believed, they were more interested in obtaining TV shows and movies that subscribers would enjoy and offering them as a service that could maintain a profitable subscription rate. For example Friends cost well over a million dollars per episode by the end of the production, but they was okay with that cost knowing that they could made more money from each episode in syndication than they made in first run. Netflix paid a standard rate for each year they had it available, regardless of how many times it was watched and Netflix valued it as a "this % of our subscribers watch the series and if we loose it we risk this % of viewers leaving the service.
They have it backwards though. What is offered isn’t worth what they’re charging which makes the content creators overpaid.
You’re correct, it’s not sustainable and they are raising prices and cutting investment in content. They are tiring of losing so much money. I read that actors are having problems finding work since the strike ended. So the business is being rationalized. Some are shutting down and others will merge. More bundles and price increases and we are back where cable tv was. The golden age of streaming has peaked where you got loads of great content for a low monthly price.
I have the best solution yet. I don't watch TV anymore.

They all might as well just put back the cord because it appears that they are all combining and the prices are getting higher, while the cables were. They don't want you to share your password with your kids in college but they want to keep adding all these high prices like the cable companies use to be, They need to stop price hiking your streaming service before people find something that they can watch free like Pluto.

I haven't decided what I am going to go out and spent my $5 on. Won't buy much these days.

actually Yes. I've been trying tell people this for at least 5 years now that this was gonna happen because the fracturing of these services just wasn't sustainable. The advantage Cable had over the dozens of streaming services is everything was basically in 1 place.

If they push prices too high they just spawn piracy. We are at the tail end of a golden age where everybody was producing loads of content chasing financial mirages of huge profitability. Now that those mirages are evaporating, content creation will slow (or concentrate on cheapo garbage like that seen on little-watched cable channels for many years). It was nice while it lasted.
As far as Motor Trend shutting down, it wasn’t to smart of an idea in the first place to have a paid streaming service when there are so many free options on RUclips. You have everything from the old school Motor Week to TFL and a bunch of channels in between that cover all kinds of vehicles from the classic to the exotic. Having a dedicated paid service was just dumb.
My current apartment building has both Verizon and Comcast, enabling a choice. I quit cord in 2019, switched to antenna and T-mobile 5G home internet.

So far that's me. But I wonder how much longer that will be an option. I see streaming services headed to cable/satellite type service.

I get over 100 channels with it.
All for no monthly fees.
Plus I get all the scripted nfl games as well that are in my market.

My condo in Charlotte when I moved there included a pretty basic cable package in its fees and I had to pay extra for internet.. In a couple of years, they rolled the internet into package for no extra cost so I actually saved money by not having to buy for internet on my own. The cable TV portion did include HBO...
Don't be fooled, the condo had yo pay for this, and rolled it into your fee's.
I rent in a gated community. The HOA bundled with Xfinity. It added $60 to the HOA fee which the landlord wanted me to pay. It was a win win for me. Now I pay $60 plus some added bonuses instead of $130. I think the downside is some senior citizens don’t watch as much as my wife and I. We’re both 78 years old.
I’d hardly consider Motor trend+ a major streaming service 😂
I’m getting tired of all the fees for these streaming services. I have Philo and I watch RUclips for free, and Netflix , but considering getting rid of that too. We were paying $160 for cable. If all these streaming services add up to more than $59, I’m out. If I want to watch sports , I’ll wait to stream it later or go to someone’s house. I still have a dvd player if I want to watch a movie now and then. And Philo lets you save movies for free!
I moved from the NYS Catskills/Hudson Valley NY to Norwalk CT 4 years ago this November. Living here in the apartment complex didn’t give us much choice….the majority were Frontier….I went with Optimum due to was formerly known as Cablevision which was Spectrum which is what I had back in the Hudson Valley. The 2nd reason I went w/ Optimum was that Frontier was way more expensive.
My appointment complex use to include cable tv with my rent, but 3 years ago they installed antenna’s on every unit and gave us the option either pay for cable ourselves or use the antenna, I think I have a better picture with the antenna than cable, but my only complaint is I don’t get a strong enough signal to get a over the air dvr to work.
I’ve been using a little antenna in my window with a Tablo OTA DVR for several years. I’m in a big city and signal strength is mostly good except I can’t get our local ABC channel. Definitely a better picture than cable. I supplement with some streaming, but not any of the big expensive services. I’m happy with my system, but I’m not a big TV watcher and don’t watch sports, so I know my setup wouldn’t work for many.
Then you dvr has a weak tuner, get a different one, antennaman has some reviews on them on his channel.
@@Michael-Joseph123 I have tried both tablo’s dvr’s, the old one and the new one and neither works and I can not adjust the antenna.
@@shanedewey8785 don't try a network dvr, use one of the ones that plug into your hdmi, no internet needed, they work like the old vcr's except without a cassette tape, the signal should be the same going into a dvr tuner as it does to a tv tuner, it does not care what it's hooked up to.

The issues with streaming services today remind me of a conversation I had with a local broadcaster(OTA), about a decade ago. The main issue, is that the streaming business model is contrary to most business models. Where the more successful one is (in terms of viewership), the more it will cost the platform in the form of bandwidth. This is not even considering that many of these platforms have went into debt in order to obtain more content(ie buying other collections or creating new content). Where as for an OTA TV station, the startup costs is a lot higher, but the costs are fixed/predictable.
Actually none of that is why they are going broke. What happened is basically the exact same thing that’s going on in the auto industry, they expected the good times to keep on rolling & didn’t have foresight enough to see the boom was VERY temporary.
What they did was stop selling their content libraries whine at the same time spending money on original content.
The simple fact is Hollywood has ALWAYS made more money on selling rights to their libraries than actually making the product itself. However you probably had some younger executives thinking the old way was outdated & instead of updating to fit streaming they tried to reinvent the wheel so to speak. Things like having the servers is a zero net cost much like a brick and mortar building would be, meaning it’s just the cost of business and you don’t expect to make any money off of it. However when you go billions in debt trying to produce a product, sell it to a consumer AND compete with other services that’s where you lose money. This is exactly why a service like Netflix will be okay because they have cutback on producing new shows and at the same time buying the rights to content from the companies that realized the old way was better.
Simi Valley, CA - city is building a Fiber network. My apartment building owned by Avalon has a deal with spectrum and they are not even allowing the construction of the fiber network into the property.
I didn't cut the cord on cable back in 2012, when I got my first Roku, in order to waste money on streaming services. I'd bet there are people out there spending as much for streaming as they did for cable. I have two cell phones (TMobile), pay $70. a month, which covers all I need for phone, internet (hotspot, never been throttled), and TV. A landline where I live costs more than that, if you want long distance too.
Doesn't work if you're a gamer.
I hate that my apartment complex has me trapped with cable. Spectrum keeps gutting my sports package. Ugh.
Just keep internet only add $$$ sports or use a tv antenna and cheap.philo.and frndly tv
you may be able to still get those channels. BTN is still doable through the spectrum app or foxsports app, similar with nhl network
When you pay rent, you get a cable service. I do. Mine is $10 a month with DirecTV.
The community I had a home built at had cable and fiber internet included in the HOA. Then CenturyLink shut down the cable business (kept the internet) forcing us into streaming. The cost we pay to stream equivalent service doubled or tripled depending on the cable replacement you went with.
Several decades of TV commercials and they believe they can make people pay instead. The hassle of more bills, even if you're willing to pay! Commercials on RUclips are usually subpar to TV, for no reason. TV streaming services don't put in commercials advertising their other movies and TV shows, which TV networks have always found profitable. They ain't thought it all out and ain't trying otherwise....
I used to live in apartment would not allow any antenna the cable wire was there that was before streaming.
My family lives in an area where they have no choice as for watching TV with cable. It is not because of HOA or apartment complexes have contracts, it is because Fios isn't allowed in there area and the satellite company comes in pretty choppy without poor weather conditions. 5G networks are very low going into the area so again cable company is needed for internet and telephone.
Cord cutting is so very frustrating for me as I/2 of my monthly cable bill is for high speed internet. That leaves only the other half of my bill to be used to select alternative streaming services which limits my choices dollar wise. I sure wish that there were more choices for reliable high speed internet as I only have one option/provider in my area. Monopolies are not price negotiable.

With Max adding all this extra content, it really becomes a giant mess. I bought Max for HBO. With all this extra content from Discovery plus rolled into Max, it makes it very difficult to ONLY see new content from HBO. It's a giant mess.
I bought Max for Turner classic movies. The fact that I get the West Wing and newsroom thrown in for free or included with that price just makes me happy.
I hope they add Cinemax as a bundle deal. Amazon already does.
Just turned in my box today (i.e., finally cut the cord). Don't watch TV at all so should have done this a year ago (when the last episode of the show I had watched or nearly 9 years ended). :)
Congrats!!! Did the same last month. I should have cut years ago. There are free streaming (Plex/Pluto/Tubi). Should be enough for me and got a OTA antenna (I get like 60+ channels) as well. Feels great only paying for internet. I do have a 1.2TB cap unfortunately so can't stream all day. Stay strong and takes about a month to adjust.
Question for Luke: In response to the new sporting package from ESPN and FOX, do you see RUclips TV or other streaming services opting to get rights to air sporting events directly?
That's an interesting question. Fascinating scenario where RUclips TV has exclusive rights to a game and people who have cable or another service have to pay the $73 for RUclips TV (on top of their cable/other subscription) to watch a single game or season. Or, do they have a lower tier (almost like a pay-per-view) for single games/seasons? Had never even considered that could be a possibility.
@@bennym1956 I used to todo that. I would just get more ads and often get malware. no thanks. I use an OTA antenna and Tablo DVR to watch sports on the local channels. I subscribe to the MLB pkg for years, which I can watch on Firestick, phone and computers. Also, if you do pay for apps, most have exclusive sports available on them, too.
I'm missing ESPN, ESPN2 and reg Fox sports channels. Those should all be part of the new sports pack this fall. I'll just have to wait to see exactly what you get and whether it will be worth it for me.
I've lived in communities with HOA fees most of my life. The fees are used for commonly maintained amenities, whether you use them or not. For example, my condo building has an indoor swimming pool that I never use, but still pay for indirectly. We don't have a cable deal, but as long as the HOA doesn't charge a separate fee for cable, it falls into the same category as any amenity in my mind. BTW, if you don't want your community to include cable as one of its amenities, you can always lobby the Board not to renew the contract the next time it comes up. Doing away with an indoor pool is much harder ;-).

Its ironic that paramount was the first to pull out of HULU which originally was a partnership between all the major studios is now looking to start a partnership with another studio

With Formula 1 starting this weekend, I've had F1 TV since it started in 2018. I didn't have ESPN, so this was the way for me to get my F1 fix. Do you see any other major sport going stand alone? Yes, there is NFL Sunday Ticket, but you have to get RUclips TV to get it. Do you think they will ever offer it stand alone? The same goes for MLB, NBA, NHL, NASCAR, etc.
QUESTION for Luke:- Do you think there are too many streaming apps chasing viewer's. The streaming app market has been saturated with lots of streaming apps in the last 5 or 6 years. Do you think this is the reason why a lot of streaming apps are shutting down or merging. Too many apps chasing too few customers/viewer's?
it is no different from having a variety of tv channels. I believe the profit is less than desired, they are not going broke.
It's just like how the cable networks went through a few decades ago. For example, A&E was the result of the merger Arts and the Entertainment Channel.
@@fsb5370it is different because all those tv channels were all available from one or two cable providers in an area. all these separate streaming providers are like paying for each tv channel separately. I'm glad they are starting to merge again.
I think the biggest reason most of these will die especially the free ad supported ones is that 90% of the content on them is exactly the same there really is little difference in terms of content between them

As an att prepaid customer, I do not expect to ever get a penny from the outage.
When you pay only $50/month, and the service is out for 1/2 day, you are entitled to less than $1 refund. Don't expect a free month (or more) for a blip in service. Good Lord, people love to complain.

I still think all freevee originals will get moved over exclusively to Amazon Prime Video eventually. Then it will become a watered down Pluto TV until not many people get upset when it's shut down (probably late 2024 or early 2025). It would be nice to be wrong, but streaming seems to have entered its cost cutting/consolidation phase.

It wouldn't be from at&t if you did get one, at&t does own consumer cellular, I have Cricket, which is owned by at&t, and they already said that Cricket customers are not getting the $5, I don't care, I pay $125 a month for 5 lines, and years ago my at&t bill used to run $250 to $300 a month for 4 phones, it was always changing depending on how much data my daughter went over, never have paid over $125 for Cricket since I switched 8 or 9 years ago, and the kids say they never noticed the change in service, they're living on their own now, but I still pay the phone bill since it's so small.
They all going crazy since Covid slowed down😳
What always bugged me about cable is that when I call to add service, they claim they can't tell me what my monthly bill will be. Yet they bill me "accurately" just fine.
I never had that issue with spectrum. When I added something they told me how much it will be afterwards.

Comcast/Xfinity have a monopoly in sections of our city & not till late last year were we able to finally get T Mobile internet. Before that Century link a block away told us only thing they could provide was a landline. So HOA & renters are not the only ones stuck.This happens all over the US. They sign contracts with cities all over the country. We can't use OTA because we live under a flight path. Reception drops every 30 seconds. 😢 We bought the house before airport expanded and they lied.
All I can tell you is sell the house and move.
It’s similar here with cable cause spectrum cable is all we are allowed to use since I was a child in the 90’s it was satellite or time Warner as spectrum was called then so we still have our subscription now mainly cause it allows us to have max free
@bg1jh I have news for you, anywhere you move can fall victim to an airport. Just take a quick look at any of the flight apps. My friend did just that, sold her house and purchased somewhere else thinking she was good to go. She could not be too far from her family in Seattle, she moved to Auburn which is nowhere close to SEATAC and now has a flight path over her house and can't even use her backyard or deck. Airports are always expanding and they constantly lie to cities and get away with it. I have lost count of how many class actions are out there against airports and judges routinely drop them. $$$$$$$$ wins over people's rights. To add insult to injury, Delta now lowers wheels over us dropping gear oil over everything. They have ruined 3 outdoor deck umbrellas and furniture with their nasty oil. Who knows what that is doing to soil, water...wildlife? Every other airline comes in with wheels lowered already. We have contacted the FAA and they do nothing. Another $old out useless fake entity.
@bg1jh No clue what happened to my reply. My good friend did just that. She moved far from the airport and now there is another flight path over her house and she can't enjoy her deck or backyard. We've gone to a slew of meetings with the airport and all they do is lie. Now Delta is lowering wheels over us and dropping gear oil over everything. I have gone through 3 deck umbrellas so far. I have tried contacting FAA. They do nothing. If you take a few moments to check the flight apps you can see what the airlines are doing to the country. They don't care. Its all about the $. If you don't have planes flying over you, consider yourself lucky but don't bet that at some point an airport will add more flight paths like they have done here and ruin your property.
Comcast, Paramount/Viacom and Disney/ABC are the big kids on the block along with with the original cable service Max/HBO.
Who gets the rebroadcast fees. The networks or the government. Could that be considered a tax

What I'm interested in the new sports streaming service is to be able to get live stream of WABC in NYC! I live in Suffolk County on Long Island & my antenna can't pick up WABC nor ABC affiliate WTNH from New Haven Connecticut! But I can pick up WCBS & WNBC & Fox station WNYW with my antenna!
I think that a rental apartment that requires you to pay for cable is much different than an HOA that requires it. It is much simpler to move out of an apartment you rent than to sell your house. That requirement might also affect the price you could get for your home. I would think that many HOAs will eliminate that requirement as their contracts with cable companies expire or the members of those HOAs will run for the board on a promise of eliminating such requirements. Apartment buildings might also terminate their deals with cable companies as including cable TV as part of their rent is no longer considered a perk to tenants.
My old apartment complex had forced cable. It was part of a $50 (at the time) amenity fee. It wasn’t too bad when I could plug directly into the wall and get cable. I got annoyed when I had to pay for a box every month. It basically forced me to use the cable company as my internet provider.
I did have one apartment complex back in 08 that had truly free cable. It was part of the rent, which was cheep for the time. That was awesome at that time, but it’s not something I want now.

Motor Trend was never going to work. They didn't have a major live motorsports hook. All they had was a library of existing shows and it just can't last forever before they run out of new content. The new shows being made just don't have the output needed to keep the library fresh. If all you are is a content library, do you need to be a separate service? I don't think so.
I never checked it out. You're Right, and the number of FREE RUclips videos out there about cars is huge. They review cars, show you how to do things and so much more. Sit through a short commercial and that's it. Some of the car video producers do an outstanding job.
I think it should be illegal to make people pay for any services just to keep a company alive. People should not have to pay for cable or any streaming service as part of rent or a HOA etc unless they choose to. I live in an apartment and as far as cable goes Spectrum is the only service I can have. I am not force to pay for it however, I can't call anyone else if I want cable. This was true until 4 or 5 months ago with internet service as well then T-Mobile came in with TMHI.
Its more of a 'legacy' situation from back when cable TV was the only option, and HOA's in areas with multiple cable providers didn't want to have wires running all over the buildings. Back then a cable company could bid low to get their cable system installed, then slowly jack up the price.
@ink1493 Luke said a couple months back that cable providers were making deals with apartment landlords and HOAs. Not all of this is legacy.
I am subscribed to motor trend, i had to in order to watch some of the 24h endurance races that was once free on RUclips.

$127.00 a month x 30 days= $4.23 a day x 24 hours = $.18 cents an hour.
Outage equaled, let's say 12 hours x $.18 = $2.16
Take the $5 and be happy.
How were you harmed? They could have just said "too bad, so sad". AT&T did the right thing. TBH, I was not affected and don't really care if I get a credit.
$5 is reasonable - many people were asleep during the bulk of the outage

AT&T offered this five dollar credit per account, but secretly also introduced new more expensive plans that increase each lines cost by one dollar per month in perpetuity. Existing customers are being migrated to the higher plans automatically. Scummy

I'd rather have the CBS and NBC included in the price with commercials, and not have to pay for ad-free just to get the live local affiliates, which still have ads anyway. That kind of defeats the purpose of the ad-free tier.

I had an AT&T cellphone back about 2010; lots of dropped calls and "no service" spots around where I live. I don't know anyone who's an AT&T phone customer these days.

Cable TV in Apartment Complexes and HOA - I had that situation back in the 1990s, it was an option, a sole provider, but no required payment. I just used an OTA antenna at that time; I was on the top floor of my HOA building and snuck an antenna into the attic. 😎 Unless the new owner(s) shimmied up into the attic and removed it the antenna is probably still there.
Why would Max be trying to boost Hulu subscriptions? Hulu is a Disney service.

I am for any sports, merging, rolling together, or whatever else you want to call it. It allows me to watch the Pittsburgh Steelers in Chicago. I hate the Bears I always have, but I love the Pittsburgh Steelers and if I could watch them every Sunday, I would be willing to pay for it, not NFL ticket prices either.
Cable fees baked into HOA and apartments should be an option. This should be a law it's unfair to force people into paying for something they may not want, I don't want someone else choosing and or negotiating my content packages.
If a deal is offered to you, too good to pass up. I would never be able to afford a standalone cable account. Much better if its a corporate account paid by the place I live.

Seems there is chaos in the entire industry both content creators and content providers. The cable companies are charging too much money . Is it out of greed? Now we are dealing with content creators switching to streaming services and they too are raising their prices. I wonder if the entire system is sustainable. I don’t care , I watch tv about 1 hour a week.

Luckily we don't have cable in our rent, so almost two years ago we dropped TV Xfinity cable and home phone. We wish there was another way to leave their internet too. We could tether to our phones, but battery usage increases on the phone,😊

Have the MotorTrend service and Discovery+. Fine with paying for one service instead of two, but concerned about the future of MotorTrend originals possibly not being favored over other shows and rolling back on the car related content.
MAX is making deals that might just ring the death bell for traditional cable.
I doubt it unless actual cable channels start to shutdown even though we have had channels come and go in the past but if more higher profile channels start shutting down in favor of there content becoming streaming exclusive it could mark the end of traditional cable
