This is one thing I remembered in physics class: Never put your face to the thing you are smelling for this exact reason. :) With your hand, you have to wave the air to your face to smell it. This helps in case it's something toxic.
Being from the Caribbean smelling salts was always in every household especially my grandparents they used it for when they felt bad. If someone fainted or felt bad they would put it near your nose and instantly the person would wake up. Have to be very careful smelling it because it's extremely strong so strong it can knock you out as fast as it can wake you up .
