Yes I did. The main thing is not to focus on how to sing with vibrato - but instead focus on getting proper training that will then enable a natural vibrato over time
A healthy vibrato can sometimes take time, so be patient. Main things to do are 1) Great breathing technique, 2)Open throat 3)Strengthen your head voice and you need to relax relax relax. Any tension in your body or stress in your mind will likely cause constriction and therefore inability to produce vibrato. Good luck!
i used to not be able to vibrato at all. I developed one by simply singing up and down repetitively and steadily increasing the speed. You basically have to just have muscle memory to create it. To me, vibrato does not happen naturally. I have to consciously make it happen. The thing that has to be "natural" tho is your larynx, just keep it neutral and strainless. This helps vibrato occur more easily, although you can still create it while straining, it's just harder.
+Tony Lee Why are you so cruel when answering? This individual who asked the question that to you seems incredulous, might be a young person who genuinely is asking from a perspective that truly doesn't understand. We really need to take into consideration to whom we may be responding when we respond. Also, a dash of humility might do you some good.
Your teaching is very intuitive and straightforward! I just started vocal training. My voice has natural vibrato, but I found that many methods that other people teach, first mess my natural vibrato up then try to construct artificial vibrato. Until I saw your video, I wondered that I had been wrong. YOU SAVED MY VOICE! Thank you.
I agree that breathing technique is the most important thing that will enable your vibrato. No it's not about talent, you can learn - but often you need a good coach to show you . vibrato is a process not an instant thing
Hi Macy, developing vibrato is not something that happens straight away. It takes time to develop with practice and as you're body learns correct singing technique. If you're still having trouble after a while of practising yourself and you'd really like to learn, the best way is to consider Skype lessons
Yeah, you're not the only one! Singers tend to tighten their shoulders all the time and it is very difficult to sing freely when we do that. I'm glad you made that discovery =)
Yes often the tongue is the most annoying muscle in our body when it comes to singing! Try sticking your tongue right out and doing some of the vocal exercises - it will help to stretch out the tightness
After researching ALL the videos on youtube for exercises and techniques for developing vibrato, yours was different than the rest who seem to only offer a forced vibrato.. There was one thing maybe two, that you explained that none of the others do that for me seemed to be the key that unlocked the door..Thank you so much! Not sure why all the others don't offer the same information but thankful you did!
i watched so many videos on you tube i just couldn't get it...but actually at the end of the video it was like an epiphany...i never had any vibrato but now i understood the concept its all about relaxing your throat and when you release it naturally it happens...i used to tighten my throat for years while singing so all my energy was used up there...i guess i got it need to practice thank you so so much...its amazing and so simple the way you teach!..\m/
I've never had any sign of Vibrato in my voice and never even new that I could learn it, but after 3 days of constant ooooooo-ing and breathing and trying to relax i managed a tiny little vibrato at the end of some notes. THANK YOU so much for that! you are a great teacher and i hope that someday my vibrato will sound maybe a little bit as good as yours!
I found this helpful, but also I just wanted to extend some compliments to you! I really found so much about this so easy to watch and pleasant; Your presence, appearance, tone of voice and straight-to-the-point attitude. I felt like I was sitting in front of you and was nodding along! Just wanted you to know I think you are very skilled at teaching/instructing/captivating an audience. I just decided to try to learn how to do this with my voice and I'm so glad I clicked on this video first before others which may have taught a 'manufactured' way! I will be watching more of your videos!
I understand your frustration. Have you ever had professional vocal training with a coach? If you haven't, this could be your problem. Lack of proper technique, coz that is the only way a healthy vibrato will happen naturally is with the use of proper vocal technique learned from a good vocal coach. If you're getting too frustrated and would like help, I do Skype lessons. Something for you to consider...
thank you so much for this incredibly helpful video! i've tried (for the last two hours now) to find a video that would help me develop a better vibrato. most videos however show only how to manufacture a vibrato by forcing your diaphram in and out. you're the first one who explained that vibrato comes natural, and now it makes perfect sense! thank you!!!
Hiya Kerri! I had to come back here to let you know that your info on development of one's vibrotto naturally is right on! I really didnt think vibrotto was something you could develop naturally so I listened to your other video about it and thought nah, people just have it naturally or they dont and I am one of those who do not have it. So i have been a member of smule sing for almost a year and singing daily on there. Over the past 10?months I was suddenly quite surprised to guess what? Hear a natural vibrotto in my own voice!!! It was amazing to hear that iDid that. I struggle with it a little bit but you are absolutely right about all of your tips. Ive heard several folks on smule who have a forced vibratto and its easy to see how they would strain their chords. Anyway just wanted to share!! Namaste~~~
I've been singing my whole life and vibrato now comes to me naturally. I never practiced vibrato itself, it just came naturally while singing a lot. So just know that if you do practice singing a lot it might come naturally like it did with me :D
Hello! It's most likely coz you're tightening something - either your throat is not open or your tongue is tightening. Also..you need to be patient and relaxed. Keep trying and don't give up. If you still have lots of problems after a long time, might be a good idea to get a vocal coach in your area or book in a Skype lesson with me =)
I love how straightforward and technical yet simple your videos are. My vocal teacher suggested making a strong "ssssssssss" sound with support from my diaphragm for the steady stream of air, I thought that might help!
a lot of times I actually don't use my vibrato even though it comes very naturally to me with classical music and such. but my voice is very prominent and placed perfectly, so my vibrato mixed with my placement is often too much. so on longer, low notes, I'll slip into my vibrato after a few counts to bring out the note, but the higher up I get, the more the tones ring back anyways, and to add a vibrato with that makes it sound very fake. my friend has a very quiet voice, and he doesn't like to show it off. at a solo festival, he was performing, and the judge had him fix some simple cosmetic things like his confidence and his facial expressions. Bam. vibrato. amazing, glorious vibrato. I started tearing up. I don't like men, but in that moment I fell in love with him. that's how amazing his voice with vibrato is.
I understand your confusion. The only thing I can say and I know I'm being controversial, is that I simply do not agree. Yes it can be manufactured, but in the long term it can really wreak your voice and vibrato. The best vibrato is the natural and pure one and is long lasting and does not damage your voice in the long term
I totally LOVE your video lessons!!! I don't have enough money to take course of vocalist , your vids are like such a bless for me. I wanna say "ขอบคุณค่ะ" which means "Thank you" in my language! THANKS!!! Jeanne , Bangkok, Thailand
@ Dante, Vibrato is caused by the larynx muscle dealing and triggering gently giving a nice controlled Rhythm of air through the vocal cords. The diaphragm only comes into play to provide a solid controlled supply of air from your lungs. It will initially feel like its being controlled by your throat as you learn to shape your inner mouth correctly (roof, tongue) but you should be able to control it with air flow. The larynx muscles will take time to develop accordingly. :)
I've tried to manufacture my vibrato for so long (even though I have a tiny bit naturally), that I do something where I think I use my throat to make my voice tremble and it sounds like vibrato, but it isn't. I hope one day I can drop that fake vibrato I try so hard to create and trade it in for some awesome vibrato.
That is exactly what I explained in one of my videos (in Spanish) I truly believe that vibrato comes with a good placement relaxation, good breathing technique. Basically the same you exposed here. Thumbs up to you!
I have been following your vocal exercises for a year on and off it's amazing how I have grown vocal I wish I had a lab top to do one on one lesson with u
thx.i will try that later. And,i want to share something to you. i have been trying to sing without tension for years but it failed. few days ago,i found when i sang my shoulders would tighten,a little bit higher.therefore,i lowered it and relaxed it. My voice suddenly turns better!
This is the first vibrato video I've found which goes into the physical and technical aspects. Now I know what to focus on - relaxed tongue and open throat. Thanks!
Interesting question...No talking loudly too much or screaming does not help with developing vibrato. Vibrato only comes naturally from a FREE voice and none of those things you mentioned free the voice - in fact they constrict it. Practicing the exercises in the vid will help you develop vibrato in the best way
Hmm...vibrato caused by moving out mouth, larynx or other external part of our face or body is manufactured and can cause an unhealthy vibrato sound which will be hard to correct in the future. Try to cultivate it by using the techniques I've describe, esp good breathing technique and it will come to you naturally in time.
Im learning to sing for 3 weeks now, which means, I'm a complete beginner right now and I wasn't satisfied that I can't or don't sing Vibrato. Now that I know that it isn't a real technique itself, I realised that I already can sing with vibrato, I just need to develope my voice a bit better, haha. :D Thank you
Oh my gosh you are so awesome! Vibrato has been so elusive to me and finally it makes more sense to me! Been watching all your videos, you explain everything so so well. You are amazing thankyou so much! xxo
Hey Kerri , Cheers !!! One thing I would like to ask is , could you tell me a effective vocal routine incorporating all the important exercises which I could fit in 30 minutes daily. There are tons of exercises and I get confused which ones to do . My main concerns are 1) Range 2) Effortless tone 3) Vibrato .
Hi Kerri, these videos are very helpful to me so thanks for making them :) I'm having trouble with my vibrato so could you tell me what it feels like to switch in and out of vibrato ,or make another video that elaborates more of the details on vibrato and what it feels like. Thanks so much! ~Jeremy
No. I'm actually learning how to create it naturally, and it's literally jaw placement. When my teacher used to say "drop your jaw" I didn't realize until much later it makes it so vibrato can emerge. I learned to place my hand under my chin/jaw above the adam's apple and let your neck rest against your hand, drop the jaw, sing an "Ahhhh" and open the throat: like imagine there is an egg in your throat. I very much cannot control it yet, but I can create it in my lower register. Hope this helps :)
Me too mate :/ I am a bass, so it's been quite the challenge to get my voice to where it needs to be. Somehow, when I used to perform, I'd get nervous and the nerves would make me sound like Josh Groban, but I could never do that in a lesson or in private practice :/ I graduated with my degree in vocal performance. It's something later on you will be able to control, like you can produce a long note in the end of the song, and then relax it to where the vibrato comes out. But it's a muscle, and muscles need practice :) Let me know how it goes mate!
I think it means that the actual pitch variation is not controlled when you relax. But you can still override it and sing on a steady pitch without vibrato if you want.
Zachary Quiroz I'm a bass singer myself and I find it hard to develop a vibrato in my chest voice outside the 3rd octave, especially when I sing down in the 2nd octave, however I find it much easier to sing with vibrato in my falsetto, especially from E5-C6 where my falsetto is strongest. I've noticed though that when I do sing with vibrato in those notes it sounds a little too operatic.
followed through the whole video. i sang a song that had deep vibrato and sung with my 'mask' and it improved soo much, with just one watch of the video. thanks!
Perfect!! I was having such trouble getting an open throat, the last excercise was extremely helpful!!! I finally heard my vibrato, definatley subscribing!! You're the best!!
Your videos are awesome! My singing teacher has been trying to get me to keep an "open throat" when siging but it only finally clicked after you explained it :)
Very informative videos and very well done! I've only been singing a few months and I've gotten much better thanks to you! It gave me enough confidence to do covers! Thanks!
Kyle Johnson Hi dear Kyle. I'll tell you as a friend. Honestly, these tips about singing can not help anyone. I've listened this because you published it and gave a positive comment. Who believes in himself and has a talent for music, through schooling will only improve their talent. This is a lecture through conversation, it's so tiring. No practical advice. I do not know what this piano does beside her. This is probably due to the artistic impression. This lady has a very high-pitched voice. I don't like her conversation. Even less her singing. Luckily it is very short. This is for you, let your voice and use the strength of your voice. You have a wonderful voice. You have a talent. Try to singing songs with more melodic tones. I heard your cover of several evergreens and they are great. It is only because songs are full of melodic tones. Much friendly love to you.
thank you! my last teacher actually recommended the kind of jaw/head bobbing technique to me, and probably everyone else he taught; i didn't know vibrato was natural. still not getting a natural vibrato, but i'll work on getting it and i'll try to stop doing what i am now. it's become habit for me.
This is great! By the end of the video my vibrato improved and with the breathing exercises I was able to hold the notes for much longer than usual. Thank you!
You do an amazing job at explaining the techniques. I am now actually understanding techniques I had been taught before but could not grasp. Thank you so much.
Before I found this video I always tried to force out a vibrato because it sounds so beautiful and it even kind of worked. I used to have no vibrato at all and now I have a tiny bit of forced vibrato. But using the right technique I have no vibrato at all :( Does that mean I will never have a real vibrato or can I get it by practicing these excersises??
MsShakeitup22 I have the same problem. From playing woodwind instruments in grade school, I learned the "incorrect" technique (diaphragm induced) and brought it with me when I started learning voice. I've been trying desperately to learn the "correct" (i.e., "natural") way, but for the life of me, nothing comes out but straight tone. Ms. Ho is hardly the only one to essentially say "It's magic!" No one seems to be able to explain the vocal mechanisms clearly for those of us who can't make it "just happen." It's so much like someone who's never injured their legs explaining to someone who's only just received functional limbs how to walk. And I'm beginning to suspect that voice teachers may not be sufficient. Perhaps we need a physical therapist who specializes in the throat. :(
Rachel Quinn Vibrato has nothing to to with breath. The physicality of vibrato is created by your vocal chords (which are attached to your arytenoids then to your adams apple 'Thyroid Cartilage') tilting forward. This goes in hand with the larynx lowering creating a LARGE space and the perfect environment for resonance and in turn vibrato. To practise getting this space do sobbing excercies to get the space required - that's the most important. Also just to clarify, vibrato is SO healthy for your voice - it basically is yoga for your voice (you've never heard of an opera singer losing there voice have you) I hope this helps, this is not my opinion or how I think vibrato is made - this is from research done by sticking a camera down someones throat and seeing what actually happens. I suggest looking at Estill Voice for more clarity.
E's come out with a strong natural vibrato, but all other vowels just stay stagnant. I can hold notes for a long time, and it seems my breath is even, it just never turns to vibrato :( I like to sing along with Lady Gaga's jazz album called "Cheek to Cheek" and try to match her vibrato. It's fun practice!
I did the exercises but there's no vibrato :( I'm just singing the note straight out. Am I missing something? I tried doing it softer but it doesn't happen. Can I train my muscles or is that wrong?
+Jenn Herr I also have a vibrato video that might help. It's super easy, so maybe check it out and let me know if it worked! Don't give up!! You'll get it!! :)
Jennifer Her You could also practice dropping your larynx which is a practice they ise for opera singer which supposedly helps give you an idea of how the vibrato works. The exercises in this video were very helpful so don't give into people who promote their page...-_- That's just disrespectful... Not you but the first one who replied to you.
Very helpful. I've been singing for about 10 years but I'm very shy and I practice alone or in my car. I love singing. I still want an understanding of How to open my throat.
This was so helpful I almost feel like I should be paying you... THANK YOU! That last exercise is actually helping me hit higher notes better as well..
I have a slight problem.. I'm pretty sure I'm doing everything correctly, but i feel my vibrato is sort of fast compared to others.. How do I get my vibrato to ring out slowly and beautifully like beyonce's? I noticed her voice is very rich and the vibrato in her voice is very slow and deep, unlike mine which seems very flitty. (Like in her live performances, you can really hear the vibrato) Thank you!!!!!!!
Yes I did. The main thing is not to focus on how to sing with vibrato - but instead focus on getting proper training that will then enable a natural vibrato over time
It takes time, patience and practice and comes naturally after you learn how to sing with freedom and openess

Wow, followed you through the whole video and right at 8:50 a little vibrato started on its own w/o me even thinking about it
+Jeffrey Deppa - Wow- that's great Jeffrey!! Good work! =)
SAME! I was so happy! 😅
I'm home alone trying to practice but my cat gets freaked out and looks like he's seen a ghost every time I start singing😂
My dog is doing the same hahaha
Maybe it's new to them and I'm making hella weird noices rn and they would probs do worse if I was there 😂
Haha, they get used to it after a while - well, eventually :)

Hi Kerri, these videos are very helpful to me so thanks for making them :) I'm having trouble with my vibrato so could you tell me what it feels like to switch in and out of vibrato ,or make another video that elaborates more of the details on vibrato and what it feels like. Thanks so much! ~Jeremy
can i just say im so glad i found you on youtube, ur vids r just brill
the only thing i dont get is: if a vibrato comes naturally, then it would be impossible to sing without it once you get it??
Zachary Quiroz thanks! i'll give it a try too. I'm really struggling with a natural vibrato
I've noticed though that when I do sing with vibrato in those notes it sounds a little too operatic.
followed through the whole video. i sang a song that had deep vibrato and sung with my 'mask' and it improved soo much, with just one watch of the video. thanks!
Thank you so much! I naturally have a vibrato in my singing. But your tips are most helpful, and helps to enhance my vibrato! Love your channel!
Perfect!! I was having such trouble getting an open throat, the last excercise was extremely helpful!!! I finally heard my vibrato, definatley subscribing!! You're the best!!
I'm starting to get it! Just noticed it the other day and now I'm trying to work on it
Not the throat in terms of a manufactured sound. It comes from good technique and support from the diaphragm
Your videos are awesome! My singing teacher has been trying to get me to keep an "open throat" when siging but it only finally clicked after you explained it :)
I'll think about doing another video sometime...
I have found this so helpful, I am taking voice lessons at present and i do the scale warm up in them this has given me some new pointers
Glad to hear it Melissa!
So glad you found me too =) Thanks!
Very informative videos and very well done! I've only been singing a few months and I've gotten much better thanks to you! It gave me enough confidence to do covers! Thanks!
So glad to hear it Kyle!
Kyle Johnson
Hi dear Kyle.
I'll tell you as a friend. Honestly, these tips about singing can not help anyone.
I've listened this because you published it and gave a positive comment.
Who believes in himself and has a talent for music, through schooling
will only improve their talent. This is a lecture
through conversation, it's so tiring. No practical advice. I do not know
what this piano does beside her. This is probably due to the artistic impression.
This lady has a very high-pitched voice. I don't like her conversation. Even less her singing. Luckily it is very short.
This is for you, let your voice and use the strength of your voice. You have a wonderful
voice. You have a talent. Try to singing songs with more melodic tones.
I heard your cover of several evergreens and they are great.
It is only because songs are full of melodic tones.
Much friendly love to you.
You are really kind to the people, this is Useful guys.....I used to learn about vibrato and vibrato is one of Obligations that singers must have
Glad to hear it! Thank you
you're so so welcome
thank you! my last teacher actually recommended the kind of jaw/head bobbing technique to me, and probably everyone else he taught; i didn't know vibrato was natural. still not getting a natural vibrato, but i'll work on getting it and i'll try to stop doing what i am now. it's become habit for me.
That is so amazing to hear! Keep up the practice and good work!
I might do a vid on that one day..but just simply stretching out the tongue a few times will get rid of tension too
Thanks and no worries! Hope you're sharing the vids with others so they can be helped too =)
Well done dear.
Thank you!
Thank you so much for your info. I am having a singing lesson . He taught me that I have generate vibrato. Thanks again. I was straggling on that one.
You're welcome!
i developed vibrato by trying to do when i was 4 or 5 and i kept doing it and it improved on it and now i have good vibrato
Good to hear!
This is great! By the end of the video my vibrato improved and with the breathing exercises I was able to hold the notes for much longer than usual. Thank you!
I've been trying and i still don't have "vibrato"
+Krystal Martinez - keep practicing, this is a skill that takes some time. =)
7 months from this comment posted, do you have it now?
+Sion Napitupulu bruh 😂😂
She probably quit...
It takes time. Sometimes years .
I have natural vibrato when I'm singing when I almost get killed while playing a video game but when I'm singing seriously, I don't have it.
you're welcome !
DAMN! I love your falsetto/head voice
love the video! I teach music and I tell my students the same thing! There's an artificial and natural vibrato. great explanation!
+Candace Gould - Oh thank you- I appreciate that so much!
Best lesson I've ever seen. Thanks!
+Exidor Cyanuro - How nice! Thank you so much Exidor!
You do an amazing job at explaining the techniques. I am now actually understanding techniques I had been taught before but could not grasp. Thank you so much.
You're very welcome Cynthia!
+Nick Len If Vibrato just 'happens' how does one switch from using it to not while retaining healthy vocal technique?
You are the best teacher miss Kerri
E's come out with a strong natural vibrato, but all other vowels just stay stagnant. I can hold notes for a long time, and it seems my breath is even, it just never turns to vibrato
:(
I like to sing along with Lady Gaga's jazz album called "Cheek to Cheek" and try to match her vibrato.
Kerri you are amazing. Thank you for sharing your beautiful voice, as well as technique with all of us.
(Like in her live performances, you can really hear the vibrato)
Thank you!!!!!!!
FINALLY, i have found a video with an actual vibrato tutorial!!!!!
You may find my vids about How to sing high notes with power helpful - talks about singing in head voice specifically
