My favorite Historical site. Visited 5 times, so far. I considered a career as a Tour Guide after I visited as a child (and actually corrected…respectfully…our Tour Guide as to the direction as to the Charge of Law’s Brigade against Chamberlain’s 20th Maine). And I’ve visited Dunfermline Abbey in Scotland, where Robert The Bruce (who I’m named after) is buried. I love Gettysburg beyond all measure. Took my wife the last time. She said that it was like having her own tour guide; she wasn’t prepared to like it…History isn’t a love for her like it is for me…and ended up amazed by it all.
I was an undergraduate student at the University of Maryland in the early 1960's. On some Saturday nights, we would drive into Washington, DC, about 15 miles away. On some of those nights I would go to the Lincoln Memorial, which back then was open to the public 24 hours a day and usually deserted on Saturday night, and read the Gettysburg Address which is engraved into the walls of the memorial in the shadow of Abraham Lincoln. It was always an emotional experience. It is so sad that others cannot share that same experience now that our society has created the need for barriers and guards and closing the monument at night.
I visited there first and only time about 17 yrs ago and stood there reading that...crowds around...and felt transported. Everything shut out and it was just the weight of Lincoln's words around me. Very emotional.
I’m amazed that this was the first known reading of the Gettysburg Address at the actual site that Lincoln stood. Thanks to all involved for posting this video.

Thanks for this! I'm a big fan of Sam Waterston. It's kind of amazing to think that Lincoln's very brief but powerful Gettysburg Address, widely considered one of the finest pieces of oration in the English language, was preceded by a TWO HOUR speech by someone named Edward Everett (who's claim to fame surely must be that excessively long speech!).
I was there in March of 2015 & it was such an experience, so humbling and sad, my heart was so sad. Sadly to this day because I have changed cell phones & companies, & I need Started to print them off. We hope one day to take our kids, now 13 & 16.
What a treat! Thank you for doing this. When I was young, I watched the Ken Burns Civil War series many times. To this day, whenever I read Lincoln's words, I hear Sam Waterston's voice in my head.
Such a short speech with deep meaning! The proof being it is still read and recited today! Old Abe had a great way with words! Such deep emotion repressed. He told lots of great jokes too!

Listening to that marvelous, beautiful address once again, thank you Sam, it occurs to me that a lot of that speech could apply to this country today. 💖
Thank you ABT for sharing these moments with these 2 great actors with us.
Chills. I literally got chills listening to him recite this.
I was there in March of 2015 & it was such an experience, so humbling and sad, my heart was so sad. Sadly to this day because I have changed cell phones & companies, & I need Started to print them off. We hope one day to take our kids, now 13 & 16.
Abraham Lincoln was an exceptional human being. America was lucky to have him..indeed the World was.
Sam Waterston delivered Lincoln’s Cooper Union speech at Cooper Union. It is appropriate that he did this today.
I believe this was Friday the 5th. They talked about it at the film festival on Friday
I just got goosebumps. God Bless the United States of America
Sam shares ideals similar to Lincoln. I’m glad they got this experience, least we forget this three minute speech.
Boy does this ring all the more true today… With democracy again under attack, albeit in a very different way.
Amen!
democracy isn't under attack; also, we're not a democracy
Wow, this has been the best video that I’ve seen in a long tome.Thank you, Mr Sheen, and Mr. Waterston. God Bless America♥🤍💙
Thank you very much for this clip
Thank you ABT it was great Event to be with all of you in so nice moment in time. ❤️🍀🗽🗽🗽🍾🕊🕊🇸🇰
2 wonderful actors showing my favorite side of history, where the actual event took place stating the words used at the original event. History at its finest.
Great actors bringing history to life! We need this more than ever.
How wonderful and heart warming to see these 2 phenomenal actors together again ❤ God Bless our country🇺🇲
At least Lincoln didn’t have to deal with sirens in the background! How inspiring!
Thank you.
It’s me again, we visited Gettysburg in 2010 and we’re astounded by all of the monuments from every Confederate unit who were there. Loose, Win , or Draw, they wanted to honor the fallen.
So fabulous! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
We spent our honeymoon @ Gettysburg in 1962 & I swear we walked the battlefield & identified places. .it was an unforgettable experience. Watching these two brilliant actors brought back to much of the beauty of our history .
What a great initiative. It is always relevant to be reminded of the peaks of the American Creed. Very special. Thank you for doing this.
I choked at the same moment. What a man. What a speech. Worthy of being graved in stone, as it is.
Thank you for sharing this video. So informative and special as these are two of my favourite actors.
