Two weeks ago, there was reason to think that the Middle East was becoming more stable than it had been for years. Washington was pushing for normalization between Israel and Saudi Arabia as one piece of a broader attempt to reduce the U.S. role in the region and focus on other priorities. Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7 shattered those hopes.
But there had long been signs that all was not well-that key assumptions underlying U.S. strategy were on shaky ground. In the months before the attacks, Suzanne Maloney and Marc Lynch saw the lights flashing red. Maloney is vice president of the Brookings Institution and director of its Foreign Policy program. Lynch is a professor of political science and international affairs at George Washington University. As they watched the region over the past several months, both worried that another crisis was coming.

I've listened to a dozen or so talks about this conflict in the past week, trying to inform myself as friends, family members and strangers hurl a barrage of distressed opinions my way in the aftermath of the 7th. You are the first to take a substantive look at the events during and since the Abraham accords, and the second to mention events of the past few years at all. Thank you for providing some much neglected context.

This is a very levelheaded discussion. Palestinian extremism has been caused/exacerbated by Israel own actions
A fine program, yes, but the moderator could have followed up with a question to Mr. Lynch about who are the 60 Palestinians on the West Bank who have been killed by the Israelis. That is, were they militia, violent protesters, or just kids throwing stones? This would provide us some context for for the grim situation there.
They were primarily ordinary workers or farmers. Many of them were killed by illegal Israeli settler/squatters who have been given semi-automatic weapons by the Israeli state.
They had nothing to do with events in Gaza on October, 7th. Some of them were tortured before they were killed. The tally is over 130 dead Palestinians at this point.
