I live in Catoosa,(tulsa) Ok.i was talking to someone today about casting reels.told them I was watching your videos. He said you were a great guy.his buddy's child was in hospital and all he wanted was to meet you. You then flew to them to meet the child in person before he passed. Way to go Roland
I’m 69 and started fishing again after many years. I thoroughly enjoy your videos the best since I remember you from back in the day. Keep up the great work, much appreciated!
Roland! Thank you, thank you, thank you and thank you again for this video! I have had an old Bantam baitcasting reel and rod for years but had gotten so frustrated with it I stopped using it for a couple years! Multiple casts landing right in front of me with backlashes all the time and simply not able to get it to cast right. I just didn't know how to use it. Then I saw this video. I can now let a Texas rigged worm sail as far as a crankbait and do not worry about backlashes! The best tip you gave was cast like you are casting over a 10 foot wall. My God if that was not the best advice! That made all the difference in the world. Now, my baitcasting rod is my favorite rod thanks to you! You may remember me as I was the one you and Jimmy Houston signed my fishing vest at the opening of the Bass Pro Shop in Bridgeport, CT! Thank you for the 5th time!
Man I wish this video was available 2 years ago when I started implementing baitcasters into my fishing arsenal! It’s awesome that you started all these teachings videos.
When I was broke teenager a friend got frustrated with his bait caster and gave it to me. It wasn’t as nice as the ones now, no magnets etc. After many frustrating trips and much backlashing I finally got it and still use them almost exclusively. These are really great tips! Roland is the man.
I am so glad to see U at your age still casting. I retired 15 years ago and first 5/years guided in Louisiana. At 72 decided that time to hang up guide business. Now with 9 grandkids still back guiding lol. How about a best pencil sharper reel for the small kids. Have purchased a million from Zebco to 170 250 ABU but never can find a real good one. Had 3 sons so also have 3 new mothers that also want to fish. I remember starting bass fishing when I got a job in BaTon Rouge and all the old forts like us to fish False River. Glad to see Scott do so well like your videos.
Watched you for so many years and learned so much back then from you as well. Now I'm watching all of your recent videos and learning more and reaffirming what you taught then. It's so great to see you back. You're looking good.
This is why I love you Roland. I was taught incorrectly and have been lifting my thumb during the cast and braking with my thumb just before it hits the water. I just thought I was terrible at it. I'm going to get out there with the practice plug and get after it with your method. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!
I love my casting rods, I take 5 rods out in my fishing kayak, 3 are casting rods and 2 are spinning rods, all baited with different plastic bait or lures. To make it even, 4 are baited for open water and one is for punching lily pads, this way I am ready for all occasions. I learn all this from you boy Scott and his videos. But I am a boomer and like watching you just as much, now that you too are putting out videos. God Bless you and your whole fishing family.
Mr. Martin, that was an excellent video my friend. Your in depth tips are the best on RUclips. Thank you for taking the time for share your vast knowledge with us.
Good info! I think a lot of people give up to quickly on a baitcasting reel because of backlashing, but once you get use to them it will be become your primary reel of choice.
Hi Roland. I am living in South Africa and love your advice. We have a lot of grass in our province ( KwaZulu-Natal) as we fish mainly farm dams. I am defnitely going to try fishing with braid on my casting combo. Just very cold currently so the fishing is slow. Keep well and tight lines. Burt van Schalkwyk.
Thanks Roland, your technique is really helping out casting the baitcaster. Almost caught a monster smallmouth in the river at 12 last night with a topwater choppo!
+ to previous. To simple instructions, through it over the wall and keep thumb on spool and first cast made all the difference. Thanks to you I may just be able to catch some fish with my casting rods. 👍👍. 🤠 Bob from Weatherford Texas
Centrifugal brakes are friction brakes that use small break shoes, Magnetic brakes use magnets and increase or decrease slowing the spool with magnetic resistance by adjusting the distance of the magnets to the spool of the reel. I think you got it (Bass akqua-wards) Roland. Most centrifugal brakes are the ones on the spool and the ones on the out side of the spool are magnetic. I enjoy all your Videos and glad to see you are still having fun fishing.
@@RolandMartinOutdoors 04/04/2019 Mr. Roland Martin Remember long ago when you fished with Shimano Magnumlite GT Fighting Rods and Shimano casting reel models with names like Bantam SG 10, Magnumlite 1550, Bantam Magnumlight 250 and 350 Bantam reels and Magnumlite Speedmaster 2200 WSG. I do cause I still use them because they still work just fine. I have never found one bearing in any of these reels yet they still cast fine. I have a bait casting rod and reel from the Far East that can uses two-pound line and cast a 1/16oz jig 25 yards. Now this reel needs ball bearing and it takes some getting used to. I like casting gear. I switched from using UL spinning gear to BFS(UL bait casting) gear. Bait casting reels with extremely light shallow spools, spooled with less than 50 yards of light line, paired with light action rods(UL,L, & ML). Lets you cast some lures as light as 2 grams! It feels like you're fishing with a feather. I use this technique for multi species fishing, panfish, and bass. This way of fishing came from Japan, for fishing highly pressured lakes for bass, for mountain trout stream fishing, and light inshore fishing. I'm addicted to it. I have a decent MH setup with 40lb braid, but I don't take it out as much.
Roland. How are you sir? One of the best ever and....you are a very good teacher. I love your in depth explanations and than demonstrating it. Thank you so much. Great video Rolland. Your my number one tv fishermen. Learned alot from you over the years. Though that was the centrifugal brakes you showed. The magnetic is the dial thats outside that cover. Im thinking you don't use the mag brake. Good deal see im learning still lol.
James Backyard Fisherman yes the centrifugal brakes are normally on the inside and magnetic on the outside. The centrifugal help prevent bl early by putting the brakes on the spool when it spins fast from the initial cast. Bl or birds nest occur when the spool is spinning faster then the lure is pulling line, causing it to bunch on the reel. The centrifugal slows the speed when the spool is moving fast, initial cast again. The magnetic brakes are not that strong, but are in effect as the spool slows as it would at the end of a cast. To set up you caster, turn off all brakes, depress the spool release and set in the spool tensioner, little knob by handle, so that the lure slowly falls. Then turn on your brakes. Start heavy then back off of them as you get comfortable. Even with an inexpensive dual brake caster, I can have it set in two casts to get far, and not have to thumb the reel and don’t get lashes. Hitting a branch or trolling motor mid cart though, now that will still cause lashing. Good luck!

I don’t get the whole casting rod and reel are more powerful argument. I fish saltwater and surf with spinning reels and rods heavy enough to cast up to 5 oz plugs and jigs for some very large fish. In the surf, spinning is king because you can use waterproof reels. Anything a bait casting outfit can do a spinning outfit can do. I think it comes down to what you start with and what is traditionally used.
Fear of backlash has kept me from ever buying a casting reel. I would hate to spend over $100 on a reel and find I can't work it right and get backlash. (I hate backlash). So I've always used a spinning reel. Maybe someday I'll go for a casting reel.
It would be great if you took the the time to xplan casting only, the how to cast for dummies, cast with out back lash with da man Roland catch a bass any time Martin

Fear of backlash has kept me from ever buying a casting reel. I would hate to spend over $100 on a reel and find I can't work it right and get backlash. (I hate backlash). So I've always used a spinning reel. Maybe someday I'll go for a casting reel.
I heard that comment about Lake Erie and their "little lines", hahahahahaha!!!
Your thumb is basically the brake shoe
I find that I have better success with no thumb control. I only put my thumb down right before my lure hits the water.

It would be great if you took the the time to xplan casting only, the how to cast for dummies, cast with out back lash with da man Roland catch a bass any time Martin

Sorry, I'll try things a little slower!
The good thing about RUclips is you can pause, rewind, and take notes. There was a lot of info packed in the video, but it was pretty clearly laid out.
