you are wrong, higher defense allows you to absorb more critical damage and able to hold longer, while the highest weight provides you a better grip without losing it, lowest defense but higher in grip still a bad thing, same goes to lowest weight with higher defense, you need to balance two of it, it also affects your strength limit, thats why blessed armor or weapon is needed to gain more STR/VIT and END to gain extra attributes on each refined weapons/armor
4 Those who only play on Normal or Difficult will not need to have super-heavy weapons and armor. It's really only on Despair where you are frequently chasing after your helmet, weapon and shield, strewn across the arena like so many dropped quarters at a video game arcade from the sledgehammer blows of your opponents. God, I love this game!
I have posted a discussion on GameFAQs on this topic of equipment weight and if it affects how much damage the item will take until it is dislodged, titled Item weight experiment. Thanks again for your experiments to answer this, Saturnstales! "In pace, ut sapiens, aptarit idonea bello." - In peace, like a wise man, he appropriately prepares for war.
I believe that spears are easier to smash away than other weapons. They have the best reach, but are weak when fighting up close, even the spears with over-sized blades, like the Slash Spear and Long Handled Saber. But spears may be the best weapon when facing a particularly strong gladiator. Stay out of his weapon's range and keep jabbing him in the stomach with the Pilebunker and Stealth Needle attacks. The Sudden Strike attack is good for sending helmets flying and for piercing heads.
I also tested my experimental gladiator against a Despair-level Hories, the "Arbiter of Souls" from Aegyptus, to test leg armor. The 99/99/3 leg armor seemed to take the same amount of punishment before being struck off by Hories' low attacks as the 99/99/90 leg armor worn on a subsequent test with Hories.
Test 1: Taking a saved gladiator (G1), I equipped her with a helmet, large shield & sword with 99/99/3 stats, exported & imported her. Then I took another saved gladiator (G2) and equipped him with a 99/99/3 weapon & shield. I fought G2 against G1 a few times (using the exhibition battle arena), windmilling the tar out of her helmet and shield with Double Bash attacks. I then equipped G2 with a 99/99/99 weapon & shield & these appeared to strike off G1's light helmet and shield slightly faster.
Tests by fighting exhibition matches in the Battle Arena: I made an export gladiator version of Sextus, but with nearly identical gear (same 99/99 attack/defense stats, same size, same +50 physique bonuses) except the gear was much lighter. I imported this gladiator and fought Despair-level Danaos who smashed away my helmet and large shield quickly. Then I played Danaos with my original Sextus with his heavyweight gear. The helmet and shield appeared to get smashed away in same amount of time.
There is a new topic in the GameFAQs Gladiator Begins discussion board about item weight factoring in retaining it and about heavy weapons being better at striking items away.
I experienced it and came to a conclusion that heavy gear has a slight advantage over light gear but not as much as offense and defense. I don't know what the offens on armor does. I also noticed a few things, if you make your gladiator realy heavy with a lot of strength it is very hard to get knocked of balance by (heavy) opponents. So I try to get all equipment parts on 99.99.99 and with all equipment +50 strength. And a base 300 strength.
Test 2: equipping G1 with 99/99/99 gear & G2 with 99/99/3 weapons, it took longer to strike that heavy helmet and shield away. Equipping G2 with heavy 99/99/99 stuff, it took less time to strike away G1's heavy armor, but not by much, and it still took a long time hammering away. Typically, filling the crowd approval meter up to 75% full.
3 The conclusion I came to was that super-heavy weapons will strike away armor faster and super-heavy armor will stay put longer than light-weight armor. But the results were not very significant, although they were noticeable. There may be flaws in my tests and the perceived results were only subtly different, but I need every advantage I can get when playing the Despair game.
Conducting my own experiments, it seems I might have been mistaken in my assumption that item weight helps your weapons smash away enemy armor. I used a gladiator with two weight 38 Berserker Maces and they seemed as adept in smashing away armor as two weight 90 Berserker Maces. Don't tell me I went through all that weight upgrading for nothing!
My latest test on the efficacy of super-heavy items: playing through a campaign on the Despair setting with lightweight (99/99/3) stuff. There really was not much perceived difference on how well super-heavy armor stays put under attack and how well super-heavy weapons smash away armor. I did not experience the terrible problems I encountered when I first played the Despair game where I had such difficulty striking away the armor of my opponents, but they had little problem in smashing away mine
I did some expieriencing and found out that vitality increases the defense rating of the armor. and strenth increases the grip on the weapons (defense) as well as the obvious damage inflicted by weapons.
vitality is how u can absorb snd endure critical damage, the higher your vitality + refined bonus per armor/weapon. the longer you can fight while taking damage, but watch for the head though.
I have done some research and the defense symbol seems to be the hp of the armor and the weight seems to reduce damage from light weight attacks and heavy weapons increase damage dealt to armor. but heavy armor does not increase damage dealt to armor only the weapon.
Another experiment: do heavyweight weapons smash away enemy weapons and armor better than lightweight weapons? And are some types of weapons, such as clubs and hammers, better at smashing away things than other types of weapons, such as spears or swords?
I've run a quick test and few experience with lighter gear , that maybe the lighter your gear the easier your enemy throw you off balance (sorry for bad english)
Thanks a lot for making this experiment, Saturnstales! But I offer a further question: does weight and defense (or stamina) combine to help keep the armor in place and not get smashed off? Meaning, having a shield with 99 defense and 99 weight help keep that shield in place? When I played the Despair difficulty setting for the first time, my 99/99/3 armor and weapons would get quickly smashed away and I would get stomped. I upgraded my armor to 99 weight and this problem largely was rectified.

@@ianianotorius1027Don't forget that it takes more hits for a serious injure if your VIT is high enough.

Oh yes I will, I wont stop the walkthrough till I beat the game. Don't worry more is coming next week
Good idea...that would be tough to do but I could try it!
