  • In this video from a recent Beck Institute Workshop, Dr. Aaron Beck discusses how identifying patients' beliefs, behaviors, and points of focus is an integral part of cognitive behavioral case formulation. Dr. Beck then provides an example to illustrate how beliefs, behaviors, and points of focus are interrelated and can lead to the activation of core beliefs.

This speaks to the importance of finding out the "focus" withing the matrix of beliefs and behaviors. Dr. Beck says here that it took him five minutes to formulate the case, and find the focus, which speaks to the utility of getting to the money quickly.

It seems we know the most important thing in any therapy is nothing to do with therapy - its all about the persons resources going into therapy - then the relationship, shared goals = so therapy is probably helpful for a tiny subset of well resourced people and ineffective for most everyone.

Extratherapeutic factors are indeed important, nevertheless cognitive-behavioral skills can be beneficial for a lot of people under a good working alliance.

They are the most important factor by far - i'e seen estimates from 5 - 15% for theory, model, techniques and supervision combined. So all of the stuff that makes for an expensive course/training and stress, is negligible. Then consider most studies are done on so called 'DSM disorders' that are themselves highly contested due to their lack of scientific validity and reliability, with zero objective measures or identification of aetiology or proximal cause - then most of the studies are done on so called YAVIS populations that are not at all generalisable. Then consider the well known but 'under researched' harms of psychotherapy. The entire thing is a house of cards of enhanced placebo kept afloat because its useful for diverting attention inwards and helps obfuscate a plethora of cultural disorders and therefore helps to maintain the status quo. @@MunchinYou-jy6km
