    As brutal and sad as Teach's death was, I do love how Teach completely pissed all over Rogers' parade, completely undermining the whole point of this exercise to instill fear in the rest of the crew. He also saved Jack's life and prevented him or anyone else in the crew from suffering a similar fate. He was one tough dude who was defiant to the very end, just like Vane.

      The tv show Vikings also showed it as well but Vikings only showed it once and didn’t really show the brutality of it. Where in black sails they do it 3 times, the first time you wonder what happened, second time they show you what is happening, and the finial time you hear it knowing full well what is going on.

    The actor who plays Captain Berringer is Toby Stephens brother! Imo he did a gr8 job and made his presence felt with a relatively monotonous villainous character...

    One of my favorite episodes of the whole series, despite how brutal it is.
    To me the theme of the whole episode is the dangers of underestimating someone.
    Jack and Teach underestimate just how far Rogers is willing to go and how ruthless he truly is; the whole scene of Teach’s keelhauling is really focused on Jack’s realization of how totally wrong he read Rogers; however, Rogers himself underestimated just how tough and courageous Teach was, to a point where even Rogers’ own men are uncomfortable; Teach’s death also mirrors Vane’s, in that it will be a tale that will only inspire more pirates.
    Then you have Captain Berringer underestimating Silver and the Pirates, leading to his death.

    I love Madi's quote because Miranda gave Flint "Don Quixote" in the flashbacks, saying it would help Flint understand Thomas. 💔 Season 4 is the sanest we've seen Flint (other than the flashbacks) and I credit it to his partnerships with Silver and the Maroons. This episode really cemented him and Madi as sharing the same dream and fully understanding one another.
    Historical fact -- the real Woodes Rogers' brother who died in battle with him was actually named John. I personally believe the show changed the brother's name to further the comparisons between Flint and Rogers and how losing their respective Thomas's brought out the monsters in them. Of course the difference for the audience being we like Flint & Thomas Hamilton and Rogers is inflicting horrors on other characters we like so, yeah, big middle finger to Woodes Rogers.

    It's kinda crazy thinking about how much still happens in the remaining episodes. That scene is so brutal but also so well done. They stay on it as well, no cutting to another scene....making you feel like you, the viewer, can't escape
    But Teach was a badass to the very end and even "broke" Rogers to some extent by just not dying. Jack and Anne may have survived this but their battle is just beginning 😉

    I love that despite all his talk of civility and reconciliation in one speech, Rogers, lets the audience know that he is the most inhumane person in the show.
    Brutally murdered, nearly 100 men.
    I don’t think any pirate in the shows done anything as unhinged on screen.

    As far as the ship boarding incident goes, the pirates did everything right, but were simply out maneuvered by the Governor. The first step before going below was to kill everyone on deck before going below. They were doing that when Rogers sprung his trap. Btw, his trap, which was to hide 2 or 3 times the number of men that would have ordinarily been on a ship of that size had the unintended consequence of weakening the defenses of Nassau. The pirates took the town so easily because Rogers had too many men with him on the ship. Cause and effect.

    I think Jack's surrender was 100% about choosing to die with Anne instead of dying apart. Also, that as much as he wants to be ranked with the pirate top tier, he chooses her over everything and anything else! Also love the love between John and Madi! It's a love story you don't see coming, but when you do, you need it.
    It's so interesting that Eleanor and Max started the show together, and now they're together near the end. They started from vastly different places, hurt each other many times, but fate (and bad decisions) have brought them back. As it stands, Max has a way out, but Eleanor is deep in it. I forget if there's a scene with her and Madi, there should be!

    Keel hauling. Something that really happened. Scraping a person's body repeatedly on the undercarriage of a ship, where it's nothing but splinters and sharp crustacean/barnacle buildups... People were brutal back in the day.

    When Woods Rogers first showed up in season 3 and during that season the speech that Flint gave in 2x10 about monsters and him being it was playing in my head. And there were moments during season 3 there references about stories, monsters, and people getting hurt I was waiting for Woods Rogers monster ( or the monster version of Woods Rogers) to show up. And when that version didn’t show up I was a touch disappointed and hurt, I loved season 3 and it was great, because I wanted to see that version of woods rogers. And when Woods Rogers decided to keelhaul Blackbeard I remember thinking there’s that monster I was looking for. I fear the next 2 of 3 episodes for you because of where the story goes because of the history of some of the characters and some of their fears. As for knowing where the tv shows storyline is going everyone who was familiar with the story treasure island knew where this one was going to end up due to this tv show being a prelude for that storyline

    I want to talk about Rogers, and how deliberately he has acted to present himself as someone he isn’t. Particularly to Eleanor.
    Back in s3, there were two moments in particular that hinted at the ‘darkness’ within him. One of the other English soldiers talked vaguely about some rumors associated with Rogers, and then later in the carriage with Jack. He and Rogers talked about the book Rogers had written, and Rogers said: “there are things you leave out of the book. Things that, if they got around polite society, would keep them from inviting you to parties.”
    Then, the most damning thing of all: Rogers told the story to Eleanor about his brother’s death. But it was a very very carefully edited version of that story. Entirely told to influence the way she views him. Because Eleanor has been honest with Rogers. He knows every single bad thing she has ever done. She has literally bared herself to him, and believed all this time that he had done the same with her.
    But he hasn’t. He *deliberately* hasn’t. And for all that he says he views her as his partner, that behavior, combined with his unwillingness to confide in her last episode and continuing to mislead her in this one…none of it paints a picture of an actual partnership. And all of it indicates that Rogers doesn’t view Eleanor the way she believes he does. Because if he did, he wouldn’t treat her this way.

      That's stretch. A person being pushed to an extreme suddenly means that's who they are? So by your logic Flint was always a monster? The double standards with some of these conversations is a bit much. You can't argue on one end that the pirates are "innocent men forced into the life" and then claim anyone who uses their brutal tactics is somehow bad. I fear some ppl watch the show and completely disregard the writing.

    • @gemelwalters2942
      @gemelwalters2942 4 месяца назад

      The whole point of the episode is "ppl pushed to extremes". They demonstrated it with Max this episode as well. Eleanor also says it to Beringer, that fear isn't the answer because "ppl can only be pushed so far". You do the writing a disservice by painting it as...Villain bad. No, it's about good men being pushed to dark places. This is basically the overarching theme of the entire show.

    • @Lady_Yunalesca
      @Lady_Yunalesca 4 месяца назад

      @@gemelwalters2942 I don’t think I ever argued that the pirates are innocent. And no, Flint wasn’t always the way he is now, but that darkness absolutely still existed within him even before he took on the name of Flint. And I’d hardly describe what Rogers does now or then as a good man being pushed to the extreme (which isn’t to say he is a badly written character or doesn’t have layers). But the true story of what happened after his brother died paints a deliberately horrifying picture. He systematically tortured an entire crew, except for one he left alive to tell the tale. That’s not a moment of rage where you lose yourself. That is taking your time to hurt and kill because it gives you satisfaction to do so. And that’s something he did a long time ago, well before he was “pushed” into this situation. And again, the issue I talk about here is less the awful thing he did - everyone on this show has done horrible things - but how deliberately he misleads Eleanor about it and presents himself to be something he is not. Especially as she has been honest with him about all the bad things she has done.

    • @errwhattheflip
      @errwhattheflip Месяц назад

      @@gemelwalters2942 I don't think Rogers is somehow bad but he's pretty much exactly like the people he hates. A large theme of the show is the savagery of civilization and Rogers embodies this perfectly. His personality and etiquette are carefully constructed and it creates an interesting parallel and contrast with Jack, who is both inside and out a gentlemen (not to say he's good because he isn't, but he isn't the same as Rogers) but Roger's personality is clearly hiding darkness within and he's aware of this.
      Not to say he doesn't love Eleonore because human beings are complex. Obviously he wouldn't want her to think of him as some monster so it makes sense why he would omit the part of him murdering more than 70 men, especially since there's no reason to reveal that

    for what it's worth they play quite loose with the History. This isn't how blackbeard ends, nor is it really how Woodes Rogers acted as govenor. He was very much the man he was at the beggining in offering pardons to any man in an attempt to bring law to the Bahamas. He ultimately ended up in debtors prison due to never being able to repay the debts he'd acquired over his time. But was eventually absolved of his debt and found his way back to Governing the Bahama's. He kept piracy out of Nassau but ended up dying there due to ill health. All things considered for the time he was a respectable, not financially you could argue, man.

      The show has kind of always taken the approach of showing the 'real' version of pirate legends, as opposed to being an actual portrayal of pirate history. The triple keelhauling of Teach feels like the shows version of 'Blackbeard's body swam around the ship three times after being thrown overboard.' You can sort of imagine how one thing could evolve into the other thing with multiple retellings and embellishments by superstitious sailors.

    Terrible end for Teach, but some things partially "console". More people were needed to beat him with the sword, he resisted the torture, he mocked Rogers and he would have died in a short time anyway due to the shard in his chest. Regardless, Ray Stevenson played the best Blackbeard I've ever seen.
    p.s.- Israel Hand FTW

    I think you both still missed the point. No, it's not that Roger's was some "monster". By your logic Flint was always a monster. The themes being explored is about men pushed to extremes. Eleanor said the same thing to Beringer. About "there's only so much a man can take". The same thing happened With Max. It's about extremes and what happens when ppl are pushed into a corner. It's not about anyone always being some evil person.
