Not sure how you did it, but I really like this format 😊 On a second thought I think it's a combination of: tasteful (and not overdone) editing, a lot of concise and interesting information. Didn't really feel like it was 15min; felt more like 8-10min to me. Nicely done.
Girl is this a chapter of your dissertation? This was so well-researched! Tbh one of the things I’m looking forward to when I move to Japan is convenience stores that are actually convenient.
We see you sliding into documentary/medium dive content …. And I absolute love it! Keep up the fabulous work Alison! Any of you guys from the states wish our convenience stores can have better and cheaper food like in Japan?
Yes definitely it would be really convenient the 7/11 in Cali only have frozen foods some pizza and hot dog 🌭 but the quality flavor isn’t that great . Also cold sandwiches is thier main course ,sure wish we had warm Japanese food 😢
Yes, who doesn't, but it's about logistics, and it's one thing that @alison touched on with the coffee rollout, but didn't cover in depth. It is the MASSIVE distribution system necessary to get that 7-11 freshness into their stores. It's supply-chain on a mammoth scale.
You researched the heck outta this! Thanks for your hard work--I learned a lot. Incidentally, my fave conveni item ever was(is?) sold at Lawson (I'm pretty sure). It was a seasonal item. It was rolled up like a burrito, but the ingredients were a wonderfully soft yellow cake, nama cream, and fresh sliced strawberries. In all the time I lived in Japan, I actually never took advantage of the bill-paying, ticket-buying options. I just bought food there. I esp loved when the drinks would have a campaign where you could get a little toy with your tea or soda. I have a collection of little jade teddy bears and another collection of tiny Nissan cars that I got for "free."
I come from Australia. 7-11 is well enough known in Melbourne and is mostly attached with petrol stations in Perth. So when I was in Japan, I preferred to go there rather than Lawson or Family Mart. Plus, it was convenient for the international ATM machine.
I really like that Lawson has introduced a bunch of stores called "Natural Lawson" where they sell mostly vegan products. As someone with dietary restrictions around eating animal products, it's great how much variety/tasty the food is at the Natural Lawsons. Would be cool if 7/11 did something like that too.
Natural Lawson still didn’t have many options. I had a lot of trouble finding non dairy coffee drinks in Japan and natural Lawson didn’t even have one. The only thing I was able to find was a boxed oat milk latte made by Coke that was in some vending machines.
....There is literally no such thing as "someone who has dietary restrictions about animal products". Lawson's must be STRONGLY CONDEMNED for DIRECTLY LYING AND COMITTING FRAUD with it's horrendous be, since anyone seeing a store with the word "natural" in the name would expect to find items that are more NATURAL, instead of vegan items, which are completely unrelated to whether or not something is "natural" in a literal sense, but which is guaranteed to be LESS NATURAL and to LITERALLY WREAK HAVOC ON HUMAN HEALTH - being a thousand times WORSE for your body, the EXACT DIRECT OPPOSITE in which the amount of "natural-ness" is literally DECREASED. Completely unacceptable to have this name for a vegan store.
Sweden has had a huge boom in 7/11 over the past decade. They're literally on every corner and are actually pretty good. When I was stuck back in Sweden duing the pandemic before I moved to Canada, I would always get my coffee to go or like a quick lunch on my way to whatever errand I had to run. But that's like...the only kind of convenience store that Sweden really has. We're pretty big on proper grocery store chains that often have like a tiny kiosk/convenience section, so typically they never existed beyond like in train/subway stations or airports but they're becoming a more popular place to hang out and do work or just chill for a bit. Especially in larger cities like Stockholm, but certainly in smaller ones too. It's looking very likely (assuming I pass my final interview) that I'll be moving to Tokyo in March and I'm very excited to explore the Japanese convenience store. Also, you should totally do more videos like this. Super informative :)
The first thing I’m doing when I go back to Japan is getting an egg salad sandwich from 7/11. That was my breakfast of choice while studying abroad (we had a 7/11 right under our dorm building)
this was so fun! i was just thinking about this very topic the other day!! excited to get a 7-11 feast when i visit tokyo in feb for the first time in 3 years x
That's so funny what you said about the Showa era. I used to live in Japan in the late 80s and I was thinking just the other day that I bet the reason why the Konbinis are so popular and have such great selections is because they had to cater to the long working salarymen who would often work into the wee hours and even sleep at the office. I also imagine that's the same reason why there are so many vending machines and with such a wide selection.
Family Mart is the best one because they have this nice lil tune. That being said, you're right, the best one is the one closest to you. On a different note, your hair looked amazing in this video and the middle parting suits you very well!
There are 2 7/11 stores that are quite literally a stones throw from each other in Akihabara. One next to the McDonalds by the Taxi Stand outside the Station/Yodobashi Camera and the other just around the corner on the same block. It's wild.
Having been to japan a couple of times already my favorite is definitely LAWSON because they have really good food options too and they also partner with anime companies as well for exclusive merchandise items. I found a really awesome Spy Family item there that I brought back to the states Theyre safe, clean and have so much delicious stuff that I usually just go to them for my breakfasts so I can save money. All the convenience stores there are so good (dont like the Newsdays as much because they dont have atms sometimes and the ones they did have didnt work for me and less selection) Most US convenience stores actually arent all that convenient. You usually have to drive to them (unless youre living in NYC). I usually only get gas and then leave. I stopped buying food and snacks there. Waste of money and full of preservatives. Bathrooms always dirty too. Only 1 brand in the US is acceptable and thats the Buckies chain that is a southern US only chain. Huge buildings, massive parking lots and many gas station pumps. Food is decent and large bathrooms as well. Everything is BIG
Loved it! I’d love to see more similar videos. If you can work in an explanation of why public bathrooms in Japan often lack soap/a way to dry hands, even better 😂
yo! this video was incredibly entertaining, interesting, and informative. 7/11 conbini is our favorite here. great job with all the research into this one! i'd love to see more deep dives into 'random' Japan business/things from you. Thank you for the awesome video!
It is so funny that Japan has all of these stores that I had growing up in suburbia Cleveland Ohio. 711, Lawsons, and Mr. donut! I’m not sure if it was you that I had told or someone else. But Mr. donut had my favorite donut ever. It was a chocolate cake donut covered in larger pieces of peanuts. Well fast forward to 2020 Merritt Island Florida. Found a donut shop that used to be a Mr. donut back in the day. They make some of these core donuts that Mr. donut made one of which is my favorite! I was so excited. We were going to buy a piece of property in the cocoa beach area. But there was just not a lot to do there. So instead we bought some property in the Ocala forest. Where we can just get to Coco anytime we want it’s close by. We try to go down for rocket launches but that has not worked out well as of yet.
This was really cool and really well made!! You made it really clear and concise to retain the information. Getting to see all the old commercials was also awesome! Hope school is going well!! Rooting for you!
I always enjoy your videos… this one is a bit different, kind of documentary style- you did a great job of making it really interesting! Who knew I was so fascinated by 7-11 😂 Great video ❤
In Canada it's Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc. which is Quebec owned, but here in Ontario there are a lot of Short Stops and an awful lot of Circle K with Esso stations.
In Quebec, we call these stores "dépanneurs". They're nice, although not half as nice as the Japanese ones. All the times I visited Japan, I was always too intimidated to try the coffee machine! I should watch a video on how it works. lol Thank you for another lovely video.
Very informative video and I love convenient stores! I wish we’d have them in Germany, but unfortunately we don’t, at all 😭 However during my recent trip to Japan I had one of each of the big three near my hotel, which was insane. And I’ve got the impression that they even expanded compared to my last trip in 2018. they’re literally at every corner. So so convenient 😁 And I guess 7/11 is my favorite because in my experience they have a bigger variety of products especially when it comes to beverages. So 7/11 is my favorite, after that comes family mart and on the last spot would be Lawson because they’ll have the smallest selection of food and beverages. But all of them are great and I wished we had at least one chain at home 😢
Really interesting video! I would love to see some more videos from you in this format if this is something you enjoy making! As for 7-Eleven, we have them in Australia, but they are far inferior to Japan's 7-Eleven 😆
Hai, in my country, Indonesia, 7-11 been there for a while, couple years ago young people like to hangout in here and in fact they are try to expand their franchise to outside the capital city. But it seem not went well, only have one or two stores left in capital city i guess. Interestingly Family Mart is in massive growth here, you can see it almost everywhere and oh Lawson too, i'm talking about in capital city of course. In pandemic era we learned FamilyMart coffee is great lol. Nice share Allison i learned a lot in a fun way. I am sorry my english is not good.
You’re so right. The ones in America are scary. And growing up I remember them being synonymous with the “bad neighborhoods” or “sketchy areas” Like, you didn’t want to be part of that group who hung around outside the 7/11. You really didn’t want to walk past them on your way inside. lol. I’ve been fascinated by Japanese convenience stores though and I definitely plan to visit and check them out. Thank you for the information!
Wonderful video! I learned a lot. I lived in Hong Kong and 7-11 was king there too, likewise with Taiwan and Thailand when I visited. First off I have to say after going back to the USA I worry I'll probably get stabbed at most 7-11s here. The food is garbage too except for slurpees. 7-11 in Asia would sell hard liquor and a lot more alcohol which made my 21 year old self very happy, haha. It also feels like in the states, 7-11 lacks much of a location advantage. I could usually get to a supermarket in the same time (or less time) than it took to get to a 7-11 and the supermarket would usually have the same drinks or snacks for less (plus real food I'd actually eat)
Whenever I visit my friend in Florida, I make her take me to Wawa basically every day...sometimes more than once a day, LOL. The soft pretzels...! I bought several to give my brother and sister when I went home, but they actually got moldy before I was able to give them out--which to me means, there are NO preservatives in the pretzels. It was kinda sad, but also nice to know.
Living outside Cleveland, I really wish we had some convenience stores that were both cheap and nice. I don’t think that category exists here. But if you want seedy and sparsely stocked- we can do that!
It's funny how no one gives a crap about 7/11 here in the States. Anyway, great presentation, Allison! I majored in Marketing and I gave a presentation about Sam's Club and Walmart just like yours in school. LOL.
Very nice video, I do feel however that you skipped a very important and very groundbreaking moment in the 7/11 history. The same concept of huge 2L. washing machine powder , and 3L. big jugs of juice did not work in Japan, so they changed the whole business concept, to be small packed, and they would try to cover all the needs of anyone in the area. The delivery of fresh goods to 7/11 is also due to a Japanese input to the american concept. The reason why so many 7/11 shops are so close to each other, is to make it easier to restock fresh goods. This is how the japanese shops sometimes change their fresh food selections, 3 to 4 times a day. One small delivery truck was able to restock several shops at one time during the day, and this is what made the concept so outstanding and successful. The whole management catalog for Japan was also rebranded, from the original American one. In other words, by the time 7/11 actually became popular in Japan, it had already changed significantly from the american version. Thank you for a nice video...
There are many brands' convenience stores in korea. 💞 Surely Japanese original brand convenience store seven-eleven named located in my country : the best one of others too. ♥︎^-^♥︎
I had 7-Eleven in the states 3 blocks away from me. I remember when i first got there the beer fridge was locked you had to ask. Then, over time they unlocked it. Then with out missing a beat back to being locked. What mf tried to rob them again. Pretty much went on and on like that. Saw it a couple of times too.
7/11 stores in California are not that bad. Some of the prices are quite high, but they are not as high as merchandise sold at Santa Anita Racetrack, therefore that is why I purchase items there before going. For example, I can refill a 32 oz. soda for $1, while a 16 oz. soda at the racetrack costs $4 or $5.
so informational and well presented! not sure if you aware, but 7-11 in hawaii used to be SO CLOSE to japanese 7-11 quality. we have a lot of japanese items and onigiri, nikkuman, etc. i used to get their onigiri all the time for breakfast. then for some reason about 5+ years ago they changed their onigiri packaging so there's no separation between the nori and rice 😭 it's so disappointing now. way better than the usual mainland US fare but definitely not like japan anymore.
I think we don't have convenience stores here (Spain), at least they're not popular, they're not a "thing" here, not that I've heard of. I think the closest thing we have is gas station shops (?). You know, we have lots of gas stations everywhere. That's why I think the pokémon centers in the new game are literally gas stations. And they always have a little shop with the essentials. P.S: Ok, I've researched, and yes, this gas station shops can be considered conveniences stores, and apart from that we have very little. In any case, they don't have a portion of the services that the japan ones offer, not convenient at all. So I'm looking forward the day I finally go to Japan to experience this :D
When I first went to Japan I got hooked on Family Mart and I didn’t bother with 7/11 as i related that as a US shop at the time. Later I realised 7/11 was better in Japan but I still liked going into Family Mart. On my last trip there was a Natural Lawsons across the road from my hotel so I ended up going there every day 🤣.
I have a 7-11 just up the street from my house. I am not joking when I say their buffalo wings are amazing and I always have to get some when I stop in there. Their fresh baked pizzas are perfectly priced at $7. If I was asked to pay any more I would feel like I was being overcharged. Is the pizza good? No. It is a good price for how it tastes? Yes.
I'll never forget--when I first moved to Japan, my American coworker (and we later came to despise each other) told me that sometimes he just "bought something for dinner at the conveni." All my American brain could picture was those sad greasy hotdogs rolling endlessly and I thought, "That is pathetic." But yep, later I came to see that he was right and I was wrong! Maybe 10 haro-haro's and 20 onigiri's later...
familymart and lawsons is my favorite, though honestly if a 7-11 is closer then its 7-11. convenient stores are way too convenient, to the point i simply went to one for meals instead of a restaurant... i do feel a bit guilty that i barely went to a restaurant this time around though it was on my own choice. you need a will of iron to avoid the convenience store when in japan an go to actual restaurants...
Yes, we have a seven-eleven but not in the walking distance(it's in driving distance). They have slurpyee but that's about it. It doesn't make me want to walk in. I want a Japanese style seven-eleven in walking distance.
7/11 has the best coffee alongside Lawson, and it also has the best atms... but Lawson has the best food and desserts by far!😌Fingers crossed Lawson dominates the other two conbinis one day... -from someone who has a Lawson right next to her apartment haha😝
Every man I know goes to which ever store is closest. Every woman I know goes to which ever is closest, UNLESS it's for sweets, then they definitely go to 7-11.
actually the 7/11 by my house is dirty and small
I just got here and I'm upset that they don't have slurpees, like fishing without a pole, they really need to introduce them...
unexpected plot twist at the end xd 13:49 (ps. i think you nailed it with this new format, i like it)
Please do crane game challenge please alli
Did I just watch a presentation about 7/11? Yes I did. Did I like it and found it informative? Def. big YES. Not sure how you did it, but I really like this format 😊
On a second thought I think it's a combination of: tasteful (and not overdone) editing, a lot of concise and interesting information. Didn't really feel like it was 15min; felt more like 8-10min to me.
Nicely done.
thanks so much 🥹 spreading 7/11 gospel 🫡
Girl is this a chapter of your dissertation? This was so well-researched! Tbh one of the things I’m looking forward to when I move to Japan is convenience stores that are actually convenient.
Alas it’s just something I hyperfocused on instead of doing my actual thesis 🤧
I also though this
We see you sliding into documentary/medium dive content ….
We had Lawsons stores in Michigan in the 70’s. I don’t know when they shutdown but I certainly remember shopping at them.
Great story. I’m going to get my daughter to watch. She’ll love this story.
I ❤7/11 and miss it so much! So happy to see your video. Doug from NY State 😊
You researched the heck outta this! Thanks for your hard work--I learned a lot.

This was a history lesson I didn't know I needed or wanted and somehow found myself not able to turn away
I come from Australia. 7-11 is well enough known in Melbourne and is mostly attached with petrol stations in Perth. So when I was in Japan, I preferred to go there rather than Lawson or Family Mart. Plus, it was convenient for the international ATM machine.

As someone with dietary restrictions around eating animal products, it's great how much variety/tasty the food is at the Natural Lawsons. Would be cool if 7/11 did something like that too.
This is exactly why Lawson is king for me
Natural Lawson still didn’t have many options.
Lawson's must be STRONGLY CONDEMNED for DIRECTLY LYING AND COMITTING FRAUD with it's horrendous be, since anyone seeing a store with the word "natural" in the name would expect to find items that are more NATURAL, instead of vegan items, which are completely unrelated to whether or not something is "natural" in a literal sense, but which is guaranteed to be LESS NATURAL and to LITERALLY WREAK HAVOC ON HUMAN HEALTH - being a thousand times WORSE for your body, the EXACT DIRECT OPPOSITE in which the amount of "natural-ness" is literally DECREASED. omgg 7/11 global takeover 🧐 Im glad theyre good in Sweden too!! and good luck 👍
more of these please. i like how you did a lot of good research and presented a deep-dive on a particular topic in japanese culture.
The first thing I’m doing when I go back to Japan is getting an egg salad sandwich from 7/11. That was my breakfast of choice while studying abroad (we had a 7/11 right under our dorm building)
Excellent research, analysis and presentation!! Bravo!! ❤❤
What a fantastic video, you were so thorough! I'm not much into convenience stores and fast food unless I have no choice.
Wow and to think here in Western Australia we got our first 7-11 in 2014. I would've never thought it had been around so long
I’m so here for the Wawa love!!!!
This is a great research video. I never thought I would be so engaged in a video about convenience stores that wasn’t just showing me food.
this was so fun! i was just thinking about this very topic the other day!!
excited to get a 7-11 feast when i visit tokyo in feb for the first time in 3 years x

You was brilliant explaining the history off 7,11 . Only one's I been to is Australia and Singapore. Not here in the U.K. 🎄☃️❄️
Great video! Nice to know about the history of my fav conbini~!
Family Mart is the best one because they have this nice lil tune. That being said, you're right, the best one is the one closest to you. On a different note, your hair looked amazing in this video and the middle parting suits you very well!

Damn, the lack of soap actually drives me mad. Regarding the drying, lots of places removed the hand drying machines due to COVID.
This video is so interesting and creative!
yo! this video was incredibly entertaining, interesting, and informative. 7/11 conbini is our favorite here. great job with all the research into this one! i'd love to see more deep dives into 'random' Japan business/things from you. Thank you for the awesome video!

I just saw Mikan’s video of convenience stores in Japan 😂
I’m still fascinated that Japan takes the word “convenience” literally 😂
This was really cool and really well made!! You made it really clear and concise to retain the information. Getting to see all the old commercials was also awesome!
Hope school is going well!! Rooting for you!
thank you!! 😇
Thanks for the informative video!
I like this style of video from you. Great research, using original advertisements too. So fun
great effort putting it all together! an educational ride (:
I really enjoyed how concise and informative this video was. Please continue to make more videos like these!
Awww surupee!
I always enjoy your videos… this one is a bit different, kind of documentary style- you did a great job of making it really interesting! Who knew I was so fascinated by 7-11 😂 Great video ❤
I love this video, great job!!
I like these informative videos. they are very helpful :)

Cameraman to child holding a cone, what have you got there? Child: Baka, it's ice cream! Lol. I know it isn't that but it sounds like it...
There are many brands' convenience stores in korea. 💞 Surely Japanese original brand convenience store seven-eleven named located in my country
: the best one of others too. ♥︎^-^♥︎
7/11, Lawsons, and Family Mart are great investments (in Japan) imo.
Canadian 7-11s are ordinary, like all the other stores. I had no idea they are Japanese owned. Very interesting.
He said instead of eating out, let's eat at home 🔥
😳😳😳😳😳
Sad 😭 Why would you make it worseeee
前はAMPMもけっこうあったけど、いつの間にか無くなった。アメリカにはまだありますか?
Lawson for life
When I first went to Japan I got hooked on Family Mart and I didn’t bother with 7/11 as i related that as a US shop at the time. Later I realised 7/11 was better in Japan but I still liked going into Family Mart.
On my last trip there was a Natural Lawsons across the road from my hotel so I ended up going there every day 🤣.
Great video! I'm curious, do Japanese 7-11s have Slurpees?
Not anymore! But as I found out during this video, one appeared in the first commercials in the 70s so I guess they did at one point 😂
I just arrived here, and informed the local one what they were missing? They could makes so much money where I am...
holy shit!!! this is happening in Korea too!
I live in the USA and there are only three convenience stores in the entire county. They’re all 7-11. I have never been to any of them.
セブンイレブン🤩
What do you do for work? I'm curious.
she's a student i believe
I see now why that Domo character suddenly appeared in the States 10 years ago.
Yes.
Price for taste ratio is important! Buffalo wings sound good now 😩
I'll never forget--when I first moved to Japan, my American coworker (and we later came to despise each other) told me that sometimes he just "bought something for dinner at the conveni." All my American brain could picture was those sad greasy hotdogs rolling endlessly and I thought, "That is pathetic." But yep, later I came to see that he was right and I was wrong!
LOL. The best convenience store is the closest one. Always.
Yes, we have a seven-eleven but not in the walking distance(it's in driving distance).
They have slurpyee but that's about it.
It doesn't make me want to walk in.
I want a Japanese style seven-eleven in walking distance.
Best moment: “I’m glad they didn’t get their way - then we’d have no 7/11! *pause to arrange hair* What a nightmare!” The sass 💁♀️
💟💟💟
7/11 has the best coffee alongside Lawson, and it also has the best atms... but Lawson has the best food and desserts by far!😌Fingers crossed Lawson dominates the other two conbinis one day... -from someone who has a Lawson right next to her apartment haha😝
Thank you. This is a quite interesting review of 7/11 and I learned a lot. But I must say the chop, chop, chop editing makes it difficult to watch.
I liked Lawson more.
*except Wawa
That's right!
Kuji
🍱💕🤶🏻🎄🍱💕🤶🏻🎄🍱💕🍱💕
7/11 may have taken over Japan, but Japan took over 7/11 😅
Ares you can pay your bills and they put a machine so you can get scratch off or the lottery tickets other than that they are boring
Every man I know goes to which ever store is closest. Every woman I know goes to which ever is closest, UNLESS it's for sweets, then they definitely go to 7-11.
When you have a 7/11 near you but it isn't a Japanese brand😭
WAWA is the best...
7-11 started in Texas. Why can’t USA have quality foods and other products? Why are our standards so low here 🤷🏼♀️😡
....And how the fuck has someone "been around forever" just due to something RECENT such as 2005?!
SOMEONE explain to me why, if the same Japanese company owns all 7/11s, WHY IS THE FOOD IN THE AMERICAN 7/11s SUCH TRASH?!
Why can’t we get the Japanese manage to come to clean up and change the culture in the US 7-11’s 😢🙏🙏🙏
