Kinda hard to go full speed when there are ten people on the court, five of which see trying to stop you, and one of which is gonna be in great position to take a charge..... seriously what is the point of this drill??
If kids were aware how much work went into them being able to take this lesson, effort would be higher. Nothing more frustrating as a coach than a kid wasting reps or time. I could feel his frustration, but he kept it about improvement. Good coach
Facts, why do it take me to get more energetic for you yo move faster. Then you get caught congratulating “ it’s better”, rather than just move faster and we can clean it up. Then you get cough telling them I will focus on older players or college.
Are we trying to make layups? This seems like a great way to throw it straight off the backboard or get absolutely destroyed by a shot blocker, never have I ever attempted to do a layup full speed jumping from the free throw line 😂
I’ve heard from centers that can pin of the glass that it’s harder to block the farther someone jumps from. Who knows tho cause I’m only 6 foot and finish by going slow with miss directions like harden so I agree with y’all lol
I’ve rarely ever practiced jumping from the free throw line but in a lot of fast break situations where your not sure if you wanna dunk it or not being able to take your gather steps further out can really make a huge difference when it comes to the trailer trying to get in position to contest or time you to block it. It does seem silly but one thing I’ve learned thru my years of school ball nd pick up if you can go up stronger nd faster than ur defender 8/10x they’ll either lightly contest or get tf out of the way lol
Yes it’s important to go full speed, and unleash that athleticism, but in certain points. For example if you finish layups at the rim you should try to slow down a bit the last step to finish with better accuracy. I see soo many players missing layups because they’re going at it in full speed, the ball hits the backboard and the tip of the rim or sometimes just the backboard 😂
Blown ACL’s … the men’s game incorporates less jump stops because we are more explosive then women yet we have the same tendons and ligaments in regards to stress testing
Man, it's like this coach can turn the energy in the gym up to 11! 😂 It's wild how some folks just need that extra push to really give it their all. I mean, imagine if everyone brought their A-game like this! 🏀💪
Ive played ball my whole life and dont think ive ever jumped from the free throw line full speed for a layup? Maybe if im joking around in 21 or something but not in a real game where i could take 2 more steps and have full body control.
I THINK this drill is tryna show players that you don’t need to be dribbling the ball so deep in the paint before you are airborne for your layup.. maybe kids assume if they can’t dunk or not close to dunking they don’t have the ability to work on there hang time and body control me personally I was never super athletic but I struggled a bit with picking the ball up past the freethrow line cus I just didn’t feel I could make it to the rim without a few more dribbles or throwing up a ridiculous strong miss or an airball layup but in reality if you just pick your dribble up early & get airborne once u cross the free throw line I realized I get a lot closer to the rim then I imagined if I don’t have to contort my body in the air and even sometimes I learned getting airborne early even if it doesn’t go right (you get bumped off your path) sometimes you float for just a moment longer due to the bump and that gives you enough time to get off a decent shot (more time then you would have had if you didn’t take the bump while airborne) & you gain a lot of confidence from stuff like that I know I did but I wish I did three type of drills
Aye. I get it to some degree, but there is a whole mat right in front of them. That shit can mess up your stride causing you to "look slow." I remember a teammate going 100% speed and homeboy ended up in the scorpion pose, we switched to tape and cones after that.
you’re not supposed to go full speed into a lay up you’re supposed to sprint measure distance with the 2 steps and use a calculated move with a strong finish. you’re teaching them how to blow layups with this drill
I've heard quite the opposite opinion on that: it's a game of basketball, not a running contest. Watch Luka playing and learn control and counter action on your guard instead of running like there's no tomorrow.
That’s not the point of the specific drill. Obviously they do other things to work on the finishing part. It’s normal to break down and deconstruct every micro skill involved in one particular skill, and then you apply it all together. Similar to training for sprinting. You isolate each skill and muscle group to become as strong or as good as it can be in its own, so when combined with all aspects, you’re the most complete you can be.
It could also be, previous to this drill, the players were not giving full effort, so you create drills that force that effort, the athletes body now knows what that effort is, and then can apply that effort to the rest of the drills/practice.
I coach my little sister in volleyball and for the life of me would just be delicate with her toss up to serve. She was just launching it in the air and pretty much just ignoring me. I had to yell and fuss at her before she finally just lightly tossed it up. Idk what it is about kids but gentle parenting just don’t work sometimes and especially in sports. That’s why father figures are important. Heard a mom once say if I’m yelling I’ve already said it nicely several times already. “ITS HOT ON THE BOTTOM!!!!”
they should be doing layups if there able. if there not gonna get better if ur having them jump from one point to another. sure ur helping ur spees but its better to do it in one package.
