  • Ahead of Gary Shapiro's retirement, he is looking back at some of the most memorable specials he did while at 9NEWS.
    From Gary:
    "Colfax Avenue has been called the longest main street in America. It’s actually Highway 40, which is how people traveled from the east coast to the west coast in this country before the Interstates were built.
    Now it’s a quirky, artistic, classic, crime-riddled street, and there’s nothing else like it. Stretching from farm fields east of the metro area, Colfax takes us through Aurora, into Denver, past the State Capitol, through Lakewood and out to the foothills.
    In between there is a lot of history, excitement, nostalgia and neon. Once again, I worked with some awesome photojournalists to document life and death on Colfax Avenue."

    I'm 37 years old and have been living around east and west Colfax for most of my life... I've woke up hungover in strange places and asked people where is Colfax because I knew I could find my way home through that street, lived in a shelter with my mom off of Sheridan & Colfax and got the chicken pox there, saw a man run through our neighbors yard and drop his gun while the police were chasing him on Colfax & Moline when I was in the 2nd grade back in the early 90's, and just last week some crazy fool threatened to stab me at Decatur/Colfax station if I didn't bum him a stogie... That avenue has taught me to be aware and also laugh at the crazy shit in life... Just remembered that my Grandpa died above a bar on east Colfax a little over 10 years ago... I don't know? It's taught me how to walk with confidence and about being humble as well... Sorry for the rant

      I went to West highschool and grew up in the same neighborhood. I grew up in the ghetto ghetto. I live in a mountain town now and don't miss it one bit. My schooling was next to worthless. It's getting BAD down there again. I went to school during the summer of violence. Kids were getting shot at school. It's sad to see the city I love go to hell again . This round of poverty and violence is going to be much worse!!!

      @MeesterSickguy Год назад

      @@silvrx-pz3ce I mostly mean that back in the 80's and 90's - Denver was coming up, but was still kind of a small city vibe. It was the same size, with less people. I went to Denver Public School, and went to a vocational school for high school, and I had friends from all parts of the city. It was just a different vibe, in a good way. I'm not complaining - I like to see the city grow.

      In the 90s I lived in Capitol Hill too with my partner and drove a bus part-time for RTD as well while going to Metro State. In fact in 1994 when this documentary was made, I was driving the route 16 on west Colfax and had some interesting passengers of all types. Capitol Hill was one of the best neighborhoods I lived in with a wide spectrum of people. My partner and I used to always have breakfast on the weekends at Swifts' Diner on the corner of 9th and Downing across from "Queen" Soopers and also at Pete's Kitchen. Unfortunately my partner passed away not too long ago, but the memories live on.

    I currently live on Colfax and it's sketchy sometimes. I don't go walking around, especially at night. Casa Bonita should be open again soon and I think that'll play a big role in making Colfax less scummy. Homelessness is pretty rampant here, I see plenty of people living in tents or pushing shopping carts full of stuff, plenty of police around, too. It's mostly because the housing market is becoming increasingly less affordable. Additionally, our population increased noticeably when recreational pot was legalized, we adopted a lot of residents from other parts of the country and that's had a pretty negative effect on the culture here. For better or more likely worse, Colorado has changed a lot since this documentary first aired.

    My family owned a vacuum store on East Colfax back in 1969. Back then Colorado was a red state, now it's a blue state. Last time I checked in 2013 our store was a recording studio, This video is thirty years old. Have things gotten better or worse? Based on what I have seen around the country in the past few years, I would say things have gotten worse on Colfax. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if many of the businesses shown in this video are gone now. I hope I'm wrong.
