Plants of the Channel Islands - Kevin Alison

Off the coast of California lies a chain of Islands with incredible floristic treasures.
In this Saturday’s workshop, Tree of Life’s production manager, Kevin Alison, takes you on an exploration of these islands on his boat, S.v. californica, to introduce you to their unique species. Kevin also tells the natural history of these plants, some interesting evolutionary adaptations, and how these plants can be used in the natural garden.

During Land Breeze, does the difference in temperature between ocean and land at night have to do with temperature retention of water? I vaguely remember learning that energy transfer is generally slower with water

You’re correct. Water is a fascinating molecule and has a high heat capacity (A.K.A specific heat capacity or latent heat) meaning the amount of energy required to raise/lower the temperature. This is one reason life on earth is possible due to the temperature regulating capacity of water. Similarly, a lead pipe heats up much faster than boiling a pot of water given the differences in their heat capacity. In regards to the land and sea breezes, the same amount of ENERGY from the sun is hitting the land and sea each day, but their differences in heat capacity result in the differences in temperature. The difference in temperature leads to differences in air pressures leading to wind directions.
