Rutgers's problem gets exposed every year and that is the team has no depth. GS calls this a developmental program, but there is very little evidence of much development going on.
I know no one wants to hear this, but the injuries are really taking a toll on a major way. Yes, every team has injuries, but I will say Schiano put all his chips on the starters this year, but failed to develop 2nd and 3rd string and now it is really showing. Or it could be we are just not there yet as a team where we lose key starters and can just plug 🔌 another right behind them expecting the same results. Let’s take defense for example and look at the players hurt: Toure, Longerbeam, Dixon hasn’t been playing healthy, Rogers I believe is also hurt, Bailey is hurt, and Aaron Lewis. I mean let’s be forreal here. Are at the level where we can replace 6 starters on D and expect same level of play? We have lost 1 key lineman, our tight end and 1 of key receivers last week. Schiano has recruited a bunch of lineman but most haven’t panned out and the scheduled next generation starters also got career ending injuries. What we are dealing with now is lack of quality depth on both sides of the ball. There are some players we’ve lost to graduation and NFL and others due to injury. I think a season like this is needed because Schiano needs a wake up call and adjust accordingly. I also think our OC has been ok but then again idk if it’s because he is only coaching to the extent of the talent of our QB. Either way injuries are plaguing us more than we are willing to admit.
Yes. The excitement this year was largely due to returning stars. They are mostly hurt or out now. Makes a difference. Shame to see we can't even beat UCLA at home after the schedule they've had, and no younger kids are stepping up and making an impact.
Defense is horrible, it gets worse my alma matter just beat USC. I can't see 2 wins anywhere unless a Michigan State multi turn over game happens and RU figures out how to play defense against at least 2 opponents
Rutgers tried to wake a sleeping Bear and found out what would happen, the schedule UCLA had prior to playing Rutgers was ruthless, Oregon,LSU, Indiana,Penn St. Come on, Bruins not worst team in. Big10.
Rutgers was without both starting D ends and were banged up all over on D. Bruins are better than Purdue and as of now, better than Rutgers, but Rutgers is reeling. I wouldn't say UCLA is on their way to a great redeeming season, but we'll see.
Schiano's philosophy is flawed...ball control....low scoring...run until you can't. The BIG requires you to score LOTS of points in order to win consistantly. The lack of tackling this year is unusual...perhaps an anomaly. But the lack of returning punts is criminal negligence...hundreds of yards of lost field position. Until he changes his philosophy RU will never be in the top half of the BIG, and will continue to be painful to be a fan.
I don't get all the crying about the two point conversions. We lost by 3. If we kicked the extra points we still would have lost. The 2 point conversions at least gave us a chance to win or tie.
Here’s the thing: RU Football is not a B1G team. We have had one good year in 2006. Rutgers has not lived up to B1G expectations of delivering the NYC audience.

Agreed. You can't play scared your way into winning in this conference, esp if you lack talent ar certain positions.

If we'd kicked the extra points, the last TD that we scored would have given us a chance to tie by going for 2.
