Vienna is the capital, the most populous city and one of nine federal states of Austria. Vienna is the cultural, economic, and political center of the country, representing nearly one-third of the country's population (2.9 million).
The history of the city goes back to the Roman Empire. The Romans started a military camp called Vindobona. It became the main seat of the Holy Roman Empire in 1438, and over the centuries Vienna twice repelled the Turkish siege (1529, 1683) and was twice occupied by Napoleonic troops (1805, 1809); However, the 1700s was the "golden age" of the city, which grew economically and demographically. After the First World War and the collapse of the Empire, the country freed itself from the rule of the Habsburgs but in 1938 it suffered the invasion of German troops and Vienna became a province of the Reich. The tragic events of the Second World War brought rubble to the city and the Russian army, which liberated Vienna in 1945.
