Considering WWII Germany is on timer, it can be really difficult to get enough land fast enough with this tactic. It needs a lot of complicated strategic thinking and micro.
It's largely caused by the fact that both sides are struggling to operate with large units without them becoming easy target practice for HIMARS/155mm/Russian FABs/Tornado-S etc. before they even reach the first line of the enemy defense line and start their attack. These numerous simultaneous small scale attacks are simply working better and give much better results with less casualties. We have already seen the AFU switching to the tactics of small infantry groups during its offensive operations June '23 and August '24 as well. Large scale assaults simply don't work well anymore, the losses became too high. The combination of drones, artillery and mine fields has changed the war.
